Martin Van Buren kinda looks like Larry Fine, making him our stoogiest president.

You know, I'm more than willing to bet that the public would actually be more receptive to dollar coins if they had The Three Stooges on them.

We'll call it The Muttonhead.

God, these coins have some of the worst farking portraits I've ever seen. Jackson looks like he has Downs Syndrome.

More change? Do not want.

Maybe if they dropped the penny, then we could pick up dollar coins...

These will only be a limited edition, then there won't be no Mo.

If they made James Monroe look like Larry Fine, I can't wait to see Martin Van Buren's portrait!

To be honest, I'd have a much easier time recognizing Larry Fine than recognizing Martin Van Buren.

Speaking of the Stooges (best of all time!!!), anyone notice the similarities between Presidential candidates Sam Brownback (honky) and Barack Obama (negro)?

I swear to God - seperated at birth or what...?

I don't think they hate $1 coins, just configurations that the Treasury keeps coming up with. It's got to be discernibly larger than a quarter by sight, and you've got to be able to identify it by feel in your pocket. Satisfy those requirements and I'd be delighted to have a $1 coin.

2007-12-27 11:53:23 PM
Most of these presidential dollar coins are minted for 10 weeks, then discontinued. However, the William Henry Harrison coin will only be minted for 30 days before being discontinued.

Oh, they already get it. They're just minting stuff like this for the collectors.

Is this the thread where ignorant middle-america farkers express contempt for dollar coins, and in the process brush aside mountains of financial/experiential evidence of coin superiority? Benefits that are enjoyed by nearly every other industrialized nation?

Awesome.

"Only about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but trim and erect, Martin Van Buren dressed fastidiously."

First line about him from the White House web site. Thought that was a farking funny sentence.

Here's another interesting bit;
"Inclined more and more to oppose the expansion of slavery, Van Buren blocked the annexation of Texas because it assuredly would add to slave territory--and it might bring war with Mexico."

/I'm still thinking we shouldn't have annexed it.

i'm not sure what 3rd grader they got to do the presidential portraits for these coins, but they're pretty much all awful.

2007-12-27 11:59:28 PM
The dollar coins will never be accepted as long as there is a one dollar bill.

Get rid of the nasty rag dollar bills.

I deal with enough coins. If you can create a wallet where coins won't fall out or a pocket where I won't constantly feel the change bouncing around in it, then I'd be willing to deal with a dollar coin, but as you won't, then I refuse to have anything to do with dollar coins. Now $2 bills on the other hand, I want a few of them just so I can see what happens when I try to spend them, especially at Taco Bell or Best Buy.

Presidential Dollar Coin Thoughts:

* When they get to Grover Cleveland, are they going to mint his coin, then Benjamin Harrison's coin, then Grover Cleveland's coin again?

* Will it be bad luck to use Lincoln $1 coins to pay for a theater ticket? Or a booth?

* Will there be coins that feature the living presidents? (In Bill Clinton's case, it depends on what the meaning of "coin" is)

* Will the mint get ahead of themselves by stamping Herb Dewey coins instead of Harry Truman coins?

ABQGOD: Americans do not like dollar coins. When is the mint going to get this?

I'm an American, and I like the Sacagawea dollar. I just wish cashiers didn't look so confused when I use them.

I think if they really want people to use them more, they need to make the dollar coin noticeably different than the others. Make it thicker or heavier, so it just *feels* like it's worth more than a quarter. Like the 2-pound coin in Britain.

/Although carrying around enough to buy two beers and a curry with a small handful of change will require modifying how we think about "change". It's going to be "money", instead.

I can just never get over how awful the portraits on the new coins are. Two thousand years ago they were doing better work.

Why didn't they put Reagan on the coin?
He defeated the communists after all.

Reagan:

1) a great President.
2) the greatest President.

When are they putting Reagan on Mt. Rushmore?

Hmmm...pretty soon the Simpsons are going to have to change the lyrics in one episode:

We are the mediocre presidents.
You won't find our faces on dollars or on cents!
There's Taylor, there's Tyler,
There's Fillmore and there's Hayes.
There's William Henry Harrison;
Harrison:
I died in thirty days!
All:
We...are...the...
Adequate, forgettable,
Occasionally regrettable
Caretaker presidents of the U-S-A

ABQGOD: Americans do not like dollar coins. When is the mint going to get this?

Americans don't like dollar coins that are nearly the same size as a quarter. Make a dollar coin the same size as the Eisenhower dollar and mandate that all vending machines must be retrofitted to accept the new coin and you'll see the public accept them.

crazyeddie: ... brush aside mountains of financial/experiential evidence of coin superiority? ...

They're just annoying. People insist that they be bigger and heavier than our old coins, and in so doing they are big fn chunks of metal. Aside from not having to deal with inserting old dollar bills into machines, I can't think of a single reason having a pocket full of metal being helpful... and it's not a big deal to just use the newer 1 dollar bills when you know you need to use a vending machine of some kind.

I doubt I'll live to see a Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton coin (or bill) either.

And I'm VERY confident that Hillary Rodham will never grace our currency either.

Hopefully, President Joe Lieberman will grace the $1,000 bill issued half-way through his first term in 2010, heh heh...

I know, I know. But looking at the woeful and hackneyed "candidates" the Republicans and Democrats have offered up, why the hell not?

So you've never tried to cram your impotent, tatty-ass old dollar bill into the machine at a BART station in Oakland, desperately hoping you won't have to walk because the god-damned machine won't take the f*cking dollar?

If you're going to be collecting these coins, you might as well learn about the Presidents.

He's alluding to the fact that paper dollars wear out much more quickly and thus have to be replaced much more frequently. It costs more to keep the same number of paper dollars circulating.

We should consider switching to a polymer for all bills, like Australia did.
