Cathaleon: OMG Angiepants: Whoopty Whoo The Precious Bongo Boy: BunkyBrewman: Don't paraphrase me. I stated She was an intelligent, strong, charactered individual . You felt the need to state her gender. I don't.

You are stating her gender just by using the word "her". These labels are assigned and very difficult to avoid. It is a labeling system that allows places like the United States to assign a scarlet letter to a person which follows them through life. Females are deemed bad, and the language reflects that thought process and is used to brand them at every turn.

Please give me some of what you're smoking.

Whoopty is technically correct. Unfortunately a consequence of his thought is the elimination of the functioning of most world languages, as most are based around gender. There's also the inappropriate blurring of male/female -- claiming through the exaggerated effect of the dialectic that neither truly exists. Whoopty seems to be a rather intelligent troll, but I doubt he has carried any of his trollish beliefs through very far (to be even more fair to Whoopty, most of the non-trolls I know who say what he does don't do it either -- they're usually bitter people who feel shat upon).

"they're usually bitter people who feel shat upon"

-Oh, you mean the victim complex which has permeated our society?

I'm sorry, but the words "she" and "her" are not in the same league at all with words like "attractive and successful African-American".

I am educated and aware of the inherit sexism within the language. As I stated, it is difficult to avoid using it, so I do my part to make others aware of the issue. It is really all one can do in a society that is built on oppression.

No. A marker does not necessarily signify inferiority from its parent. The culture is precisely what determines its normative standing, through its control over language. While I usually ignore everything Whoopty says, those of you substantially attacking him on this are in the wrong (a much easier critique is he is completely ignoring the real effect of what has happened, in order to wax philosophical on one of his real or presumed pet issues). As I said -- I disagree with him for a variety of good reasons -- but he is technically correct. Every reason given so far for his being wrong has mostly been bollocks.

What the fark is wrong with these people?

This is not a "these people" situation, this is poltical murder, and one that will very likely tear our Nuclear-armed "ally" in the War on terror clean apart.

The Pakistani secret police, the ISI more or less created the Taliban and have their hooks far enough into Al-Qaeda that they seem to be able to produce a "terrorist mastermind" at will whenever Washington starts pressing for one. The ISI was also responsible for AQ Khan's nuclear network in which Pakistani nuclear know-how was more or less availble to anyone with the cash. The ISI is controlled by the most extremist elements of the Army, those least happy with Musharaff's close alliance with Washington. It is almost certain they ordered the attack.

Now Musharaff's power, never all that stable to begin with since he seized power in a coup, has been weakening steadily over the last few years, attacked on the left by the Supreme Court and other "Civil society" actors and on the Right by Muslim extremists.

He brought Bhutto, the former PM he displaced in the Coup, back and dropped all charges against her, in hopes of forming a coalition government with her (still very powerful) party. thiught hey've squabbled publicly it was obvious to many inside the country that that was ust for show, and they'd unite after the election. Combining Musharaff's popularity with the rich and senior military members with Bhutto's Populist appeal to the poor and unionized would have soldified both of their grips on power for a long time

With Her dead however, this now get really ugly

Watch Rambo III a few times to see how this is an example of blowback ... against Western-aligned countries in the Middle East and against the US itself.

The CIA and the Pakistani secret service helped the Taliban and their nutty religion attain power and influence in the region back in the '80s. Had to combat the evil commies you know. And now twenty years later the chicken has come home to roost.

Civil war in Pakistan might be a good thing. If the government falls, in the anarchy, the US could actually justify taking out all the nukes in Pakistan in the name of global security. Could also decide the time is right to clean out the area where Bin Laden is hiding.

Wait...you're hating on him because he used a personal pronoun? You're hating on him because he speaks English?! What's he supposed to use: "he", "she", or "it"? Those are the only options, and according to you every single one is going to be an insult - either through using the wrong pronoun or the "branding" one.

Very difficult my left buttock. It's IMPOSSIBLE to avoid them and still speak grammatically correct English. Essentially, you're instructing him not to speak English because it's inherently sexist.
