The NHL should be banned from expansion to any place where outdoor water does not freeze naturally.

Can't find in TFA how they manage to freeze such a huge sheet of water outside. Must be an armada of refrigeration units humming away.

Funny as hell to read that 45,000 spectators turned out to watch skating.

Headline might not be too far off, but the NHLPA will make sure the salary part in incorrect.

Well, it looks like we will not protect our borders till hell freezes over, so if the Rio Grande becomes a block of ice, we will enjoy a full-scale Mexican invasion, dubbed the "Escapapades".

As I drove slid through downtown Minneapolis yesterday, I saw a lot of Hispanics skating.....

The ones that were doing it in front of the Ameriprise building were the most amusing.

I was in San Jose, CA a few weeks ago and there was an ice rink setup, a quickly melting one I might add. Didn't realize there were upwards of 50 people in Northern California who could ice skate as well as they all could, didn't see anyone faltering in the least.

I've been skating in Kenya (linky). Mind you the rink there was very small and cost about $12/hour.

Now I'm back in Canada and it costs $1/hour during public skates at busy times. If you can go during the week there are quite a few free times.

Given the crazy weather this year (lots of snow around freeze-up), I don't think we'll be skating on the lake near our house, but that's a lot of fun when conditions allow.

$1/hour? Really? I just went on Saturday and it was $4.

Yeah, there is lots of Tim Horton's free skates - but it's so packed at those times, who'd want to go?

On top of that - I pay $375 for my winter hockey season. I need to find a sponsor!

In Saint John, NB. 3 or 4 rinks in the city have public skating every saturday and sunday. We usually go once a week.

Thought about the Tim Horton's skates at the nice hockey arena, but likely crowded. Our church has one there on Jan 2. That costs 2.50 but won't be nearly as crowded.

You know that is the stupidest statement ever uttered by anyone who actually cares about the great sport of hockey.
What the fark does the ice being able to freeze outside have to do with playing hockey? Not one NHL team has its rink outside. They are all artificially frozen. Even Edmonton's ice would melt inside if they didn't have a refrigeration.

You assholes who spew that are all pretentious jerkoffs. Do you just want hockey to die off? My son loves hockey and plays at a very high level. We live in Salt Lake, but his team plays and travels in PHOENIX - yes the 120 degrees outside town of Phoenix -Just to play where the youth hockey program is huge and they have much more competitive teams then are available locally (having an NHL team is a huge draw for the kids). And on that note "When the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas in 1993, there were only about 250 kids playing hockey, with just one ice rink devoted to it full time. Fast forward to the 2005-06 season, and there were close to 5,000 kids playing for a number of different local organizations, utilizing about 22 sheets of ice." But if it were up to you these kids shouldn't be playing, right?
Can't wait for my son to play hockey in Mexico. Sounds like a fun trip.

Grant Fuhr is Mexican? I never knew. I thought he was black. Learn something every day I guess.

I saw him on Pros vs Joes - he looked a little off his game...

I don't think that's the worlds largest. 3200 sqare meters converts to less than 35,000 square feet. The John Rose Oval rink in Minnesota is 110,000 squre feet. Just a tad larger. Probably costs more to freeze the Mexican rink though.

Ya point taken, that was a bit harsh. But I see that statement made all the time, and it bothers me. How dare they deny anyone hockey - that's just criminal.
But I see that ol' Tucci actually remembers when there were only 6 teams and apparently wishes that there were still only 6 teams. Guess what grandpa Tucci? Some of us like that there are 3-6 games on a night - every night - and that isn't happening with only 6 teams.

I'm sure they won't broadcast that game in Mpls unless you have the Center Ice package or HDnet. Both are a monumental waste of money.

Nope, it's on NBC nationwide (and on CBC in Canada).

NBC has got Bob Costas on board to host the presentation, with Doc Emrick and Eddie Olczyk doing the announcing.

This Christmas season has probably been one of the hottest in the past few years in Mexico City. I haven't dared to venture to actually see the rink in person, but there are a few other (private) outdoor rinks that are set up every year during the holidays, and the amount of machinery needed to cool them is pretty impressive, especially considering the ones I've seen are pretty tiny in comparison.
