Harry Freakstorm: U. S. American Interstates have a minimum speed. Usually 45. Do the Brits have one?

Actually depends. The only "Interstate" I've been on and have seen a minimum speed is I-787 in New York. Of course, I've only been on I-90, I-87, I-88 (the New York I-88, not the Illionois I-88 and only the New York portions of I-90 and I-87), I-81 in New York and Pennsylvania, but I wasn't driving on I-81 as well as various spurs, normally I-787 or I-890 in New York. Of course, during rush hour, traffic is not even going the minimum speed posted. Of course, the police could still cite you for driving too slow. Do they? No, but that's beside the point.

replaced by golf cart: I don't think there is a lane far enough to the right left for her.

FTFY, since this story is about a woman in the UK driving too slowly and they drive on the left instead of the right.

10 mph is too slow though.

2007-12-22 12:30:55 AM
Corrections: Illinionois should be Illinois, and I missed an I-787 in there that should probably go somewhere near "minimum speed posted."

OMG NANNY STATE WTF PONIES!!!!!

Really, when's Fark.uk supposed to be up and running? I mean, it was nice of the Brits to go along with our illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq...but I don't think that means we have to start caring about what goes on in the UK.

47 is the new 42: Corrections: Illinionois should be Illinois, and I missed an I-787 in there that should probably go somewhere near "minimum speed posted."

I doubt anybody really cares. I like to read and still couldn't get past the second sentence in your post.

2007-12-22 12:45:16 AM
47 is the new 42: You'll generally only see the minimum speed limit signs in rural areas, to discourage farmers from using the interstates to move their combines from one field to another. It also keeps idiots on mopeds off the interstate.

And pretty much everywhere, you can get ticketed, in one way or another, for going too damned slow. It'll either be a ticket for not obeying the minimum speed, or negligent/reckless driving. Rush hour is an obvious exception, because then everyone is going slow, and there's simply no possible way to do anything resembling the speed limit.

2007-12-22 12:46:17 AM
Speed difference is what causes accidents.

If everyone is going 75 MPH and the speed limit is 65 MPH (assuming a clear day) then everyone is fairly safe.

However, If some jackass is going 55 MPH and another jackass is going 95 MPH both are just a likely to cause an accident. The only difference will be the kinetic energy when they crash. Both deserve a ticket.

All the people going 75 MPH don't deserve any ticket.

With reasonable laws like these we would actually reduce the accidents in this country significantly. Unfortunately, the police would also likely get less money from the taxes...excuse me...tickets written to fund their department. So, of course, it'll never happen.

On the other hand, we're getting lots of red light cameras here to improve our safety...excuse me...I mean more taxes on citizens and they will be less safe because of the sharp increases in accidents.

*Wait... I think I did that last one wrong....hmmm*

vygramul: In some states (Virginia being one) it is illegal to do the speed limit in the left-hand lane if traffic is going significantly faster.

Isn't that technically illegal in any lane or state?

The first rule of driving is to maintain the flow of traffic.

You could technically be cited for driving too slow doing 60 in a 50 if the flow of traffic is 70.

That's pretty dangerous. She's assuming that everyone will be able to see her, read the sign & avoid getting into an accident by swerving around her. I can honestly say that there are one or two times I've come across a person driving 30 mph on a 65 mph highway on a clear day & had to slam on brakes to avoid hitting them & other people who had to slam on their brakes to avoid her. Since she also was constantly slamming on her brakes there is a higher chance of people colliding with her. I'm surprised that she hasn't been in an accident or killed someone yet with her poor driving skills.

If there is a minimum speed limit on the highway she can't claim that she didn't know. 99% of passing the driver's test is showing that you know the driving laws that AREN'T posted. Maybe it's different in England, but I'm pretty sure that it isn't. She should have known better. She should also get some therapy & start learning how to dial the number for the taxi or bus system in her area. It's selfish of her to put others at risk because she wants to be "independent".

vygramul: In some states (Virginia being one) it is illegal to do the speed limit in the left-hand lane if traffic is going significantly faster.

This is generally the case in any lane on any road, anywhere. You should do the rate of flow because that's the safest speed. If you're not comfortable traveling at the same speed as the rest of the traffic, then you should choose an alternate route.

Now, here's the really fun part: in Virginia, ANY driver that is exceeding the speed limit automatically forfeits right-of-way. So, if you are involved in a collision and you were speeding, then they can find you at fault regardless of the circumstances.

I lived in Germany 1987-1990, during the time the Wall came down. The East German Trabant cars top speed was about 45 mph. I can't tell you how many high speed rear-end collisions they had in the slow lane of the Autobahn, as folks just did not realize how fast they were approaching. Might as well be at a full stop, broken down, in the travel lane.

Here in Washington:

RCW 46.61.425;
Minimum speed regulation

(1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law

If only they would enforce it!

I propose we institute a manditory "biatch slap" policy for idiots who don't use their blinkers.

People seem to think that if they let people know they're changing lanes, they wont let them.

//Thats only true in some cases.
//Don't wait until the exit ramp to get into the exit lane.
//Especially not in front of me.

I think everyone who regulary drives on the interstate has those moments.

I was driving from Ann Arbor to Macomb County via I-94 when I was in college when I came around a curve (going somewere between 75 and 80 MPH most likely) and almost slammed into the back of a minivan going 30 farking MPH in the left lane! They did have their blinkers on, but thank God for quick reflexes as I didn't see them until I was practically right on top of them. This was back when you could exit onto Telegraph Rd. from the left lane, and we were approaching Telegraph, so I assumed they would be exiting there because, frankly, why the hell else would they be doing 30 in the left lane (they had a donut on their car, so I figure they had just had a blowout.) Lo and behold, they drove PAST THE EXIT! I was HOPPING mad! Cars were blowing around me so I was stuck behind this asshat going 30 in the left lane with no intention of moving over or getting off the expressway!

Luckily I didn't get rear-ended. However, I did give them a few gestures as I passed. It was a teenager driving with their family. I'm usually a pretty level-headed guy, but I was PRAYING for a meteor to obliterate that car that day!

You know, the asstard would suffer a lot less (7x to be exact) anxiety if she just drove the speed limit.

Trabant versus S600 Mercedes-Benz at 155mph. I suspect there was only ever one winner in those confrontations.
