Some of these diet programs are taking a much more positive approach -- helping folks to maintain a diet or reach a weight where they feel happier and healthier, not where they're 81 pounds and getting busted for sharp knees on FARK.

Queen Latifah is pretty bad ass, and keeps herself looking good at any weight. I'd say she's a great spokesperson for the happy and healthy crowd.

Could be that Queen Latifah is fine with her appearance, but isn't healthy (high cholesterol, blood pressure, risk for Type II Diabetes etc) and needs help learning how to make healthy choices.

It is if you lose weight. That's the point. Jenny Craig teaches you how to eat better, and make healthier choices, so that you LOSE WEIGHT and thus are healthier, because you're decreasing your chances for fat- or obesity-related diseases

Nobody would have said that Kirstie Alley was healthy a year and a half ago. That's why she went on Jenny Craig. She's since lost around 60 pounds. She'll never be as skinny as she was when she was in her 20s, but she's much healthier now, and probably no longer overweight. Certainly not obese.

So, Queen Latifah probably has really good self-esteem and accepts her body on an appearance level and isn't signing on to lose weight with JC because she wants to FEEL better about herself. Instead, she probably was told by a doc that she needed to lose weight to be healthier, and she's now taking steps in the right direction.

Jeez, why are you being a dick to people who want to better their lives?

Good for her, and good for everyone who makes the commitment to get fit in 2008. Sort of on-topic...it's amazing how unbelievably off BMI is as a measurement of body fat by the way. I am in a training program now where they measure you with legit instruments every few weeks and it's incredible how different the two measurements are for someone like me.

I have no problem with people who want to eat and be healthier and if she gets into better shape, more power to her. I DO have a problem with attitude that she was fine with her weight and didn't care. Had she not JUST taken that stance right before the Jenny Craig endorsement, I'd have no problem with her at all (it's great that she's fine with her appearance, a lot of people don't have that kind of self-esteem).

And how am I being a dick to "people who want to better their lives?" I've made NO attacks against other Jenny Craig users and, in fact, applaud those who decide to improve their health through whatever means (JC, WW, etc). It's the Queen's hypocrisy I don't like.

And what I was saying is that from a self-esteem perspective, she's fine with her body. She's probably losing weight for health reasons and not because she wants to feel better about herself. Since there are two different causes, it's not hypocritical.

Subby's implication that it would be better to get the endorsement of a thin person for a weight loss program is pretty farking stupid, as would be getting the endorsement of a sober person for a treatment program.

I never said it was about self-esteem. She was promoting an image that being overweight is ok which, for a variety of health reasons, is not.
