i have a friend that was in DC last week, and he said that many people believe that the sniper actaully has no connection with a white van, but instead he just waits for a white van to pass before shooting, throwing off the cops even more.

I think the reason he's been able to evade capture for so long is due to our constitution and civil rights. I'm honestly not trying to start a flame war, so hear me out.

Our constitution allows for a reactive police force, not a proactive police force. The police require evidence to get a search warrant or a warrant for your arrest. Evidence is, a good majority of the time, found after a crime is committed.

If police were allowed to search whomever, wherever, then there would be a lot less crime. Maybe they'd have found this guy by now (although, I'd still prefer my civil rights :)

But, as it stands now, police generally start with motives in a murder. They collect evidence, try to figure out who would want to kill this person, and then start questioning people from there.

In this situation, they have no motive to work with. The only real thing they have to go off of is that he'll strike sometime between the hours of 8:00 am and 12:00 midnight, somewhere along a VERY long stretch of highway.

I've had my doubts pretty much the whole time that the sniper ever drove a white van. White vans are very common, as just about every large company in the area has several, so it wouldn't be too difficult to spot one anywhere near a shooting. More likely, the guy is driving some old beat-up Honda Civic with a blanket thrown over the back seat that he can hide the gun under. That way, no one will ever be the wiser, and people won't think to question a car like that.
Or, perhaps what's more likely, is that he has two or three vehicles available to him, so there is never a singular match.

I was in Virginia last weekend, when the Fredricksburg shooting happened. When my family was dropping some stuff off at the Salvation Army, the people there were saying that they were spending all their time watching the woods. It's a rather creepy situation. I know it's irrational to be scared now, despite the fact that I'm in sniper central now. But I'm really getting sick of this shiat. We deal with snipers, terrorists, protesters, and everything and it's hard not to get sick of it.

1) I've never confirmed on whether they actually believed this, but in the version of Islam they were taught, martyring oneself to attack the enemies of Islam (whoever that is perceived to be) is worthy of instant raising to Paradise, full absolution of worldly sins.

2) Committing the sin of pride by saying one is God may not fall into that category. The inseparability of God and man's place of submission before Him is pretty absolute; I think the word Islam is "submission" in Arabic. Unless he's doing some mental backflips and a lot of devoted prayer to justify his sin of pride, he's probably not a Muslim.

3) One other thing, and I've been trying to crystallize this in my skull for a couple days now. So far, all of al Qaeda's terror attacks have been one-shot deals. Ramming ships, bombing discos, slamming planes into buildings - they're not actions that can really be done repeatedly in a short period of time, and they all offer the chance of instant martyrdom. Slowly picking off people and taking a Western weekend off doesn't sound like something from the al Qaeda Terra' Handbook, unless someone's been dreaming up some fun new tactics and decided to dispense with all that "martyrdom" stuff.

Hell, wouldn't a holiday weekend be a perfect time to pick more people off at grocery stores and gas stations?

Most of the people that rally cries of "protect us from terrorism!" are white. Most of the photos of 'hero' firefighters in NYC were white. Most of the photos of murder and kidnapping victims you see on TV are white. White people are much more easily bothered by these happenings. Minorities put up with enough shiat in this society without running scared everytime their chance of being shot by a lunatic rises by 0.01%. This vague feeling of 'terrorism' only shakes up two groups of people:
-those directly or closely related to the victims.
