Gotta take down the decorations sometime.

Prospero424: nodubs: Weak. 1/10

Seriously. Then again, all trolls are pretty pathetic. It takes an emotionally desperate person to spend that much effort trying to tick off people they'll never even meet.

This, from someone who took the time to post a picture from a television show that has been proven immoral? How much effort did that take? Are you stupid? You have basically proven my point. Most likely, again

angrygrizzly: I have a solution. Wipe out both displays, and tell everyone to stop being pricks.

Yeah, that would be the reasonable thing to do, but according to TFA:

And as one resident related, if the town were to put a stop to all the displays, then the atheists win, Anderson said.

It's also factually incorrect.

Its not a matter of worshiping the solstice. Its a matter of celebrating the end to days getting shorter, and the beginning of days getting longer. You know, the winter solstice...

So it's okay to stereotype Americans as ignoramuses?

noYOUare: Atheists/Solstice? Does not compute.

Actually it does compute. The solstice is a physical event. It's the shortest day of the year and marks the beginning of Winter. Sure, there are all sorts of traditions attached to the Solstice from almost every non-equatorial civilization, but its base is still an Astronomical event.

Wow---they got the name of the song "Imagine" wrong, they felt it necessary to explain to us what happened to the world trade center, and let us know that the winter solstice was celebrated by pagans. All of which seem to add up to some atheist message. I need to go to this town---they need a monorail

Kyosuke: Unprovoked attacks are never respectable, whether they occur in New York, Baghdad, or anywhere else.

That's just hippy-talk. Don't you enjoy faith-based explosions that light up the night sky and ring in at $1,000,000 per bang?

Don't you understand that Iceland has currency and that at some point they might use that currency to purchase weapons to attack the continental United States? We must attack before they realize their capability.

Regardless of religious beliefs, I think reaching the solstice is worthy of celebration. Days will start getting longer again. I want my sunlight back!

Seriously, a solstice celebration can be just as secular as a New Year celebration.

From the Connecticut Valley Atheists site:

"Al Qaeda is not an evil organization which happens to be religious (such as the Nazis were), but rather an organization whose evil is directly caused by its religious beliefs. If its members were Atheists instead the WTC would still be intact."

Of course. Because there are extremists in every group EXCEPT the atheists. They're cuddly.

That's not it's point. It's point was that the radical Muslims believe that if they kill enough non-believers, they'll get 72 virgins in the afterlife. Or whatever, I don't know the *whole* thing, but if they didn't get some reward, they'd be a hell of a lot less eager to blow themselves up to take out infidels.

Weaver95: Or teachers get paid so little, or that rap stars and their violent thuggery are paid so much....I could go on and on (and so could you, I suspect). But that's the culture we live in these days. it's not logical, but there you go.

Well, not really. It does make sense. It has to do with economies of scale. A teacher, for example, typically has about 30 students at a time. The benefit they give to their customers (the students) is high, but there aren't that many customers. A NBA player, on the other hand, gives a low amount of value, accept that value is received by millions of customers. Let's say, for the sake of srgument, that 3,000,000 watch a basketball game, which wouldn't be out of line for a network TV game broadcast nationally. For the teacher to justify being paid on a similar level to the basketball player, the teacher would need to provide 100,000 times the benefit to his customers than the basketball player does to his. And while I think education is important, I've certainly never had a teacher who I'd be willing to pay 100,000 times more than I would pay to see a basketball game.

Ummm...Christians don't worship Christmas, they celebrate Christmas.

And Muslims don't worship Ramadan, they observe Ramadan.

Some Atheists observe/celebrate the Winter Solstice and that makes them asshats?

If you're calling them asshats, do it for a good reason. A reason like "The Christians would be asshats if they put up an Anti-Islam display as their Chistmas Celebration monument, wouldn't they? So, aren't the Atheists asshats for putting up an anti-religion display for their Solstice Celebration monument?"

I don't agree with blocking the sign with another tree, but I also don't agree with the sign's sentiments. A menorah and a creche are not insulting to other people. A sign of the twin towers blaming religion for their destruction is insulting. That would be like a Christian group putting up a sign saying you would go to Hell if you didn't believe in Christ.

There was another town that had atheists create a tree of knowledge. I have no problem with that.

Is baffled.

Also, isn't it a bit weird that the City Council fought the atheist sign by putting up an even larger symbol of a secular/paganist religion? I don't think Christianity really had pine trees as a symbol unless they started wearing them for some reason....

Did you somehow write this post from the year 300 BC? Because here in 2007, the Christmas tree is a symbol of Christmas no matter what it was in the past.

2007-12-17 02:03:38 AM
The sign angered many residents, particularly because it was the only message erected and seemed to advertise that the town was promoting atheist beliefs.

Why on earth would they think that?

Now, back to those 10 Commandments monuments, crosses, and other unquestionable solitary displays on public property that "don't promote religion...."

wydok: Um, why would Atheists celebrate the winter solstice?

Winter Solstice is actually nothing more than a scientific name for the shortest day of the year. It's something to note, and nothing more.

Most religions celebrate something on around that day. Whole thing about surviving another year and rebirth and other such tripe.

Since the Christmas tree is still a secular symbol, I'm failing to see your point.

First of all, atheism does not mean you can't have faith or beliefs, or that you can't be spiritual, superstitious or even religious. It just means you don't think there are any gods. Bhuddists are atheist too.

Secondly, and more importantly in this context, celebration does not equal worship.
I hate the cold and the dark, so I find the point where the days finally start getting longer again as much a cause for celebration and drinkening as, say, somebody's birthday or anniversary.
It has nothing to do with faith, belief, worship or the existence of gods.

wydok: Um, why would Atheists celebrate the winter solstice?

Unless I totally miss your point, for the same reason Christians might celebrate Labor Day, perhaps.

The atheists in TFA are farking annoying; I hate atheists that form a group together that encourages theists to claim that atheism is a religion...which it isn't by definition honestly.

BUT I DIGRESS

10 bucks 90% of these "atheists" are scorned theists.

Why would atheists celebrate the winter solstice?

Well, it's better to get all happy about an observable, predictable event in the natural world.

Also, I enjoy the gluttony, avarice, and sloth that fill the holiday season.
