FYI for police: banging on a hood usually doesn't stop car thieves.

Meh -When I was six or seven I was under the impression that if I waved my hand at light speed while I was stealing that candy from the store it would not be seen by the adults,I would of gotten away with it had it not been for my meddling sister.

Yeah, back in high school a friend of mine got his dad's car stolen by runing into a convenience store with the engine running... AND a set of spare keys on the dashboard.

They found it completely burned out a few days later in some woods in a nearby city.

I bought one of those big cardboard windshield sun-shades and wrote "FREE CAR" on it in huge letters, and gave it to him as a gift.

I'm looking for the statistics online, but I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere, that the most common method for stealing cars is to just grab one in front of a gas station/convenience store, with the keys in it. Apparently, a lot of people just leave their car running, thinking they're just going to run in quickly.

I guess the officer couldn't have pulled his gun and fired on the man; would that have been justified? The thief didn't steer the car into the cop, he intentionally turned the car so he could go around the cop, so no assault there. So the cop can try to stop the thief by giving him an angry look and a thump on the hood (and later radio the direction the car is going), or he can pull his gun and open fire on the guy.. tough call. He'll get heckled for the first move, and probably lose his job for the second. Tough call, indeed.

I personally would have pulled out my gun and open fire.
