Byrd seems more senile than Strom Thurmond. That's pretty damned senile.

2002-10-13 04:45:42 AM
So Bush-it's intern is as stupid as he is. I'm not surprised.

2002-10-13 05:01:45 AM
i still don't understand what this is about but it might just be the mind numbing effects of reruns of SHAZAM!!!

News just to hand: Saddam blamed for forwarded email, added to Blocked Senders list and promptly invaded.

It was confirmed by an Administration spokesperson.

Ouch. Somebody is going to get pink slipped.

Damn interns!

I swear-- there should be an age requirement to work at the White House... like 30 or something-- even for the interns. You should have at least a masters degree, and have been through at least one failing experience (bankruptcy, brush with the law, divorce) so you know FIRST HAND to be careful about what you say and do.

Did anyone see Byrd speak on CSPAN last week?

He was brave. Not like many of the Democrats who caved in to political pressure. West Virginia should be proud.

Galland writes: Byrd seems more senile than Strom Thurmond.

You can't possibly be sane. Byrd is one of the most lucid men in the United States Senate. I've never seen anyone match his knowledge of history -- legislative and Senatorial.

Control: absolutely. That war resolution was probably the most irresponsible thing the Congress has done in more than a century. Anyone who voted for it ought to be thrown out on his butt.

2002-10-13 09:51:10 AM
The e-mail was sent by intern Jennifer Hugo. Is she doable?

This is a picture of the 2002 summer interns:

I think I'd hit it (any of the chicks I mean).

White House Intern... Mmmm...

Byrd isn't senile; he's probably the greatest living parlimentarian. He's also a nut. Some of the nonsense he's spouted of late ought to be played over and over to Al Qaeda as punishment.

Jjorsett

Byrd isn't senile He's also a nut

Please explain the difference

2002-10-13 11:15:26 AM
He's not senile. He's just got some nasty shakes.

Parkinson's or alcoholism?

Two common traits in D.C. I'd say.

2002-10-13 11:54:58 AM
A nut can be intelligent and effective but still do and believe whacky things. Nuttiness is subjective and depends on the attitude of the observer. Senile dementia is a degenerative medical condition that robs the victim of his faculties. Sometimes it's tough to tell the difference in a short observation like a Senate floor speech, but it becomes apparent over time.

Byrd is one of the greatest KKK members ever, what a guy.

I live in West Virginia and Byrd is hugely popular. There are an ungodly amount of things named after him. One of my friends but it best when he said "Jesus Christ himself woud have a hard time beating Robert C. Byrd"

But they should otherwise be ashamed. Byrd bears a lot of culpability for the excessive marginal tax rates we have now. He's the most vile pork-barrelling member of Congress there is. He's economically illiterate, and he's so out of touch with current mores as to use the perjorative "white ni**er" in an interview last year. He's a protectionist relic who thinks the rest of the country should foot the bill for his pet projects in West Virginia. It'll be a happy day when he's no longer at the switch. Good riddance to the asshole.

2002-10-13 12:57:47 PM
how can people speak so highly of a former KKK member who still says "attractive and successful African-American" casually.

2002-10-13 02:52:59 PM
When he dies they will rename WV after him for all the pork he collected and dumbed there.

I hope this email is true cuz anything that will negatively effect bro Jeb is good. Hope the whole Hispanic community of Florida fixes up Jeb for retirement.

Bsman....
Being from south Carolina...and now living in West Virginia...I have a unique perspective of Robert Byrd. Yes, he get as much pork for his state as is humanly possible. The reason?? West Virginia is in the top or bottom(depending on the perspective)5 in every catagory kept. The BIG economic boom that hit the country several years ago?? it never made it to West Virginia. The reason?? Big Labor, Coal, Gas, Geography, and lack of education. All these things have been perpetuated by Big money interest in the Godless States of Ohio and Virginia. Both places should burn in hell. Byrd meerly tries to even things out by getting as much pork as he can so Ohioans won't suck ALL the life out of WV...

OHIO and ALL it's minions SUCK

While I agree that he is the greatest living parliamentarian, I personally think the man is starting to border on senility.

BSman: Your profile says you're from Austin. As in Texas? If so, you shouldn't talk too much about pork. The Johnson Space Center in Houston was located there as a political favor to Lyndon Johnson, and the General Dynamics F-111 was built in Johnson's hometown of Fort Worth - again, as political pork. At the time, the Air Force didn't even WANT the F-111, and the Air Force had numerous problems with it during its service life.

Do you consider Lockheed Martin's recent landing of the $80 billion Joint Strike Fighter contract to be pork? The planes are going to be built in Texas ... what of that particle accelerator that did get scuttled several years ago? Pork?

My point is that those who criticize over pork should look in their own backyards. WV was left out for many years because it didn't have the political pull of California, Florida, Virginia, New York, Texas, et al. Personally, I'd like to see it all eliminated.

2002-10-13 04:07:59 PM

By "current mores," I assume you mean "the stupid PC thought police."

And the problem with this is....what, exactly?

2002-10-13 06:31:18 PM
I think the king of pork has to be Bud Shuster, who used to run the Federal Highway appropriations committee, and thus had a huge-ass highway built through his one-horse home district of such bustling metropolises like Altoona and Tyrone.

Those of you who hate Byrd's pork-barrell tactics - too bad. He's done more for West Virginia than all of the state's other politicians combined and as long as he's still breathing he will be reelected every time. If you've ever spent a minute in my state - not including whitewater rafting or the skiing - you'd understand why he works so hard to bring as much money as he can into West Virginia.

I'm with you Cybermedic. Ohio sucks.

No, I should because I frown upon pork spending in any form. Byrd is simply a main offender. Much of his pork spending comes in the form of tariffs and trade quotas, which not only hurt other industries, but they also hurt consumers.LBJ was one of the five worst presidents in history, and you'll never hear me defend the wasteful space program. As for the Lockheed contract, defense spending is a necessary function of govt. If Lockheed got the contract on a legitimate basis, fine. If they got it by some other means (the more likely scenario) then it's wrong. Whoever the supplies the best products at the best price should get defense contracts. Maybe that was Lockheed, maybe it wasn't.

He's done more for West Virginia than all of the state's other politicians combined and as long as he's still breathing he will be reelected every time.

Right. That's why he's beloved in WV and reviled by sensible people everywhere else. By heinously protecting the WV steel industry, he ups the expenses for steel-consuming industries, ups prices for consumers and extends a lifeline to an inferior product. Great man he is.

2002-10-13 08:04:27 PM
You are an absolute moron, Bsman. Please look up the numbers relevant to WV's steel industry. It is infintisimely small compared to just about anyone else's.

Cybermedic and Lafemur- Byrd keeps West Virginia in the 1930's from a business develpment perspective. I have just finished a 2 year government contract with a West Virginia firm. I work for the nations 2nd largest DoD contractor and we were the prime on the project. The arrangement was to have 2 million spent in Ohio and 2 million spent in WV over two years, compliments of R.C. Byrd. The Ohio IT sub-contractors worked their asses off and were rewarded with another two years of work from the Fed gov't. The West Virginia IT company was arrogant to the point of stupidity.

Since the money originated from their state (Byrd) and business contacts, there was a tremendous sense of entitlement. They kept referring to the money as their own, and not as congressional plus-up money. They refused to complete assignments basically because they did not want to do the work assigned. I visited their offices in Clarksburg several times and it was like going back in a time machine. They did nothing REPEAT- NOTHING to retain or grow the business, ignored contractural requirements and were genuinely SHOCKED when their request for more $ went unanswered by Daddy Byrd.

Some of the technical developers were decent, but the business acumen was clearly missing. By HANDING people money, Byrd has done a great long-term disservice to the people of WV. I contend that WV companies trying to vie for business outside of the state are incapable of competing and winning business. Byrd has stacked the deck time after time and dulled the competitive abilities of his people. I expect the "Silicon Holler" to shut down and all those offices around the FBI facility to be housing massage parlors and welfare offices in the near future.

Republicans and Democrats alike will remember Byrd when he's gone and screw the hell out of West Virginia--don't think they won't. Your highways look great, but too bad Byrd didn't spend more on education-your state ranks consistently as one of the most poorly educated. BTW- Ohio has 10 million people and Virginia has 7 million and West Virginia has 1.8 million so yeah- we're going to get a bigger piece of the frickin' pie, dumbshiats.
