Damnit I had to quote myself for correction. Oh well, at least I still have a higher IQ than anyone who works at FOX. (not a joke, they're corporate executives). I just couldn't sit through the movie more than once. It was frighteningly realistic but it just wasn't funny. It's a warning to all generations, not a comedy. So, you know, boring. Idiocracy is a decent movie, but would have been better without studio and network interference. The observations made aren't especially poignant unless you happen to be in need of a clueing-in, which kind of makes the movie about you. But I like the "that's so true" aspect.

If you didn't pay attention well to idiocracy, you'd think it was simply about making fun of dumb people. But if you rewatch the intro, you'd notice that it's a heavy critcism on all the 'smart' people. All their worrying about money/time/correctness, leads to the over population of idiots.

That parts easy to forget as 95% of the movie is just stupid shiat.

It seems that every single person who liked the movie was also left somewhat uncomfortable or found the movie to be unsettling.

Ah, but what if life imitated Met-Art? (NSFW, eh?) That's something I think we could all enjoy.

But: Creating a drink based on some stuff that was in a movie that wasn't insanely popular seems like a pretty dumb thing to do. It probably won't make the creators much money. Even if it is funny, it'll have a short shelf life, much like the $MOVIE cereals that show up every time there's a big-budget animated movie.

I disagree. Camacho was stupid, to be sure, but he was never afraid to say what he thought. In addition, he was willing to change his mind without going through a bunch of lame explanations and misdirection.

Given the choice, I'd take the Ultimate Fighter anytime.

Sometimes I wonder if Judge ever gets depressed when he looks back at the things he's made and realizes that every time he's tried to warn people, they just twist those warnings into pop culture fads.

Thank you for the gift idea. I've been telling my mom to watch this movie for awhile now. For Christmas, I'll get copies for her and several more for cousins/uncles.

It's a travesty these films didn't make more money. But then again, it seems they make much more money after they make it to video than in the theatres. I had never even heard of Office Space until they were running it on HBO a while after it came out on video. Had never heard of Idiocracy until about 6 months ago when someone referenced it in a Fark thread.

Office Space, and then Idiocracy. What gift will the extremely underrated visionary Mike Judge give us next? More flair (that's Judge on the left)?

danceswithcrows: But: Creating a drink based on some stuff that was in a movie that wasn't insanely popular seems like a pretty dumb thing to do. It probably won't make the creators much money. Even if it is funny, it'll have a short shelf life, much like the $MOVIE cereals that show up every time there's a big-budget animated movie.

It sells for $39.99 for a 12-pack, or $3.30 a can. Given that Coke sells for about 50c a can and has a 40% gross profit margin then they're probably making around 83% gross profit on each "ironic" sale of Brawndo.

Now consider they've spent maybe a thousand bucks on the website and YouTube ads and viral marketing has gotten them in front of a significant portion of those who saw the movie then they're still going to make out like bandits even if they only sell a few hundred units.

Fox is smart - they know that the upcoming generation doesn't watch TV and doesn't pay for content. Idiocracy is very popular amongst that exact group of people (most people I know who saw it did via a downloaded copy).

This is just a test with a relatively insignificant cult movie to see if it's profitable to promote high-margin collectors merchandise to the market who are unwilling to pay for the content itself. This is the future of the media, like it or not.

v0rtex: It sells for $39.99 for a 12-pack, or $3.30 a can. Given that Coke sells for about 50c a can

The last time I saw $0.50 cans from a vending machine, Reagan was still president. In 12-packs, it's more like $0.34/can if there's not a sale on. YPricesMV.

then they're probably making around 83% gross profit on each "ironic" sale of Brawndo.

This margin is probably overstated, since they're spreading the startup cost over fewer cans of pop. Oh, they're making money on this, but the volume just isn't high enough for "insane profit".

Now consider they've spent maybe a thousand bucks on the website and YouTube ads and viral marketing has gotten them in front of a significant portion of those who saw the movie then they're still going to make out like bandits even if they only sell a few hundred units.

They also had to manufacture the drink, the cans to put the drink in, and the cardboard to wrap around it. These things are solved problems, but it's likely they cost more than making the website/YouTube video did. (Manufacturing physical products is too expensive. Why can't we just sell ideas? Oh yeah, they're too easy to copy.)

This is just a test with a relatively insignificant cult movie to see if it's profitable to promote high-margin collectors merchandise to the market who are unwilling to pay for the content itself. This is the future of the media, like it or not.

It isn't unique, either. Check out the writings of Pete Abrams and Howard Tayler on the subject. Content (daily comic) is free. Merchandise (printed books, buttons, T-shirts, etc.) costs $. And they make enough on that model to keep themselves and their kids alive, just by drawing comic strips that have relatively tiny market share. The general public has no clue that Abrams and Tayler exist, but they're doing essentially what you said in your paragraph above. Yes, generalizing webcomics to large media corps is probably overkill, but I think there are some similarities here. Thanks for bringing up interesting points, gotta go take the food outta the oven....

I blame the shiatty narration and other flaws on studio intervention. It's my understanding (I could be wrong) that Fox completely re-cut Mike Judge's version to the one we see now. So that while it's still a good movie (and chillingly on point) there is still some bad pacing problems, horrible narration, and other minor points.
