Some people have to pay for porn?

How sad-there should be a gov't program for this:

"Porn Assistance"

wait... there's pornography on the internet? Why didn't anyone tell me?

They have a credit card at age 16??

I didn't have one until I was 21. I didn't need one before then.

*click*

Wow, talk about security.

Wow! Does this mean that people click on the button that says "im over 18" when they actually aren't!?

OH this is sorta related! Just today I got very curious about a bill that's been appearing on me and my fiance's credit card statement, for $40 a month. I call the place, they say it's a subscription to a sex site! I'm like... I didn't think my man would be so stupid as to SUBSCRIBE to it, so I call him, he knows nothing about it, but remembers signing up for a free trial about 4 years ago. Apparently FORGOT TO CANCEL, and NEVER CHECKED THE MYSTERIOUS CHARGE! So he's been billed $40 a month for the last 4 years! It's SCARY to do the math, but that's nearly $2000 wasted! Why, oh WHY?! So let this be a lesson, kiddies! Unless you wanna waste tons of money on porn when there's free stuff out there, NEVER SIGN UP FOR THE "FREE TRIAL"!!! And always check the mystery charges on your credit card!

Giving credit cards to people under 18 is stupid and that stat is probably misrepresented because the Fair Credit Laws enacted in the 70s clearly state that no minor can be held liable for a credit card debt. There is no exception to that: parents signing off, initial down payments, etc.

Some companies get around this by issuing cards to the parents, who then authorize their children to have cards.

I know that, until 1992 atleast (before I was 18), this was true because I racked up a $500 Sprint Fon Card bill. After many many attempts to collect, they sent me a certified letter w/a court notice.

I called, let them know I was underage, and that was that. Never heard from em again. (They stupidly issued me the card as an automatic kickout because I got a phone line after movin out of the folks house at 17.)

So I don't understand why the CC method is all that useless. I'd say they are really biatching because CC verification is probably the biggest loss of customers they have--when a site says, "FREE PR0N!--enter your CC for age ver..." I've just hit alt f4.

I've always thought the porn laws were weird. A 16 year old can drive a car, which has the potential to kill them AND others, yet they can't look at a naked man/woman?

Bussen says there's a better solution: Parents and the community at large should more closely monitor kids' surfing habits.

Parents take responsibility for their kids? Ha ha, good one, Bussen.

Why thank you.

On the net you don't even have to be trying to find porn. My kid finds porn just by trying to find game codes. And no I'm not one of those parents that thinks my kids brain is going to explode if he sees a naked woman I'm all for free porn. I just sometimes wish some sites would try just a little bit harder.

Ahhhhhh... Leisure Suit Larry.

Good times.

2002-10-10 05:18:34 PM
I remember those Leisure Suit Larry questions. Only trouble with that system is that you have to be 18 AT THE TIME to know the answers. I'm 31 now, and still don't know that much about the Kennedy era.

On the topic of teenage credit card users, my brother just turned 24, and he still doesn't have one. Then again, considering that everything he checks out from BlockBuster Video goes back with late charges, it's probably better that way!

In reference to alcohol and tobacco company websites:
Scott Bussen, senior manager of Miller Trademark PR, is optimistic about the system's efficacy. "It seems like people, by and large, take it seriously when they see the date-of-birth field," he said.

I think it would be interesting to do some form data capturing to see how frequently a birthdate of someone under 21 is immediately followed by one of a person about 35 from the same IP.

2002-10-10 05:28:54 PM
Before the net, there was the R rated and X rated theatres kids would go (sneak) into.
Before that, there was Playboy, Penthouse, ect.
And so on.
Really, this is VERY obvious.

I especially liked the line about beer web sites. What kind of dumbass would that catch?

Oh, and they forgot the best part of the Leisure Suit Larry questions. On the one "Who is OJ Simpson?" one of the choices was "A convicted killer".

I had a valid credit card number before I was 18. It wasn't exactly a credit card, it was more of an online service that worked like a credit card fore you that was suprisingly anonymous.

It's true, I had a card when I was 14. All I did was sign a name and give em' 20 bucks. I'm 24 now and am too smart for the credit card companys to take advantage of me.

I personally procure all my passwords from the irc. Quite convienient really. I remember when aol went unlimited and having to talk to my parents about the $80 worth of local calls made.

Lordargent: Exactly what I was farking thinking. Kids don't even have to screw with credit cards. There is a metric ton of porn out there ready and waiting for you to scoop it up with both hands.

porn makes me sad, I'll never get to do any of that fun stuff :(

Giving credit cards to people under 18 is stupid

Having had a credit card since I was 15, I highly disagree.

The reason my parents gave me one originally was because I went on a 1 month summer program away from home. Giving me a credit card for purchases made a lot more sense than giving me a few hundred dollars (and was a lot safer).

Next, it allowed me to buy expensive things (either for pleasure or for school) without having to have my parent come along with me or having to carry lots of cash.

Lastly, my parents obviously saw everything I bought, so I had to act responsibly with the card, and if I ever did go on a shopping spree, the credit card company would have pulled the plug.

2002-10-10 08:11:57 PM
oh yeah, having a credit card in your name at a young also helps establish a credit history. A lot of college graduates actually have problems buying things like cars because they have little to no credit history.

I remember my best friend (at the time) Jennifer and I spending hours trying to get past the questions to Leisure Suit Larry. Boy, we were disappointed when we finally did . . .

Paying for pornography? You mean there are people who still DO that sort of thing? I don't trust any porn website with my credit card number. The free stuff, while probably easy to access by anyone who "stumbles" upon it, will be less likely to get me in trouble than if my monthly Mastercard statement had a line that said "XXXXXXX HOT NEEKID GRRRLS" (or something to that effect).

Long story short: No pay, or no porn!

Please tell me you're joking. He *remembers* signing up for a free porn trial on the net *four years ago*? Decide whether or not you care about his masturbatory habits, but don't delude yourself. Looks like Dude is down with the nakies, and willing to spend money on it.

Or let's say he's on the level. If he's rolling up enough on the credit card that he doesn't notice a "mysterious" $40 a month charge in four years, he's got some other problems you need to worry about.

Or you could just rob the sumbiatch blind, I suppose. Offer him free sex one night, and then, every night for the next four years, charge him...

I too had a credit card before I actually turned 18, but oddly enough, now I don't. Somehow in all these years I have gotten smarter and now I nolonger need to borrow money just to buy groceries or clothes. I save for upcomming major purchases and such, yada, yada, yada... Sadly I can no longer enter a valid CC number for free access to porn! Then I realize that with a hobby of boudoir photography, I don't need to! God, I love life.

What kind of moron pays for porn? Between newsgroups and Kazaa, you can get all you want for free.

Excuse me but what is porn?

That Leisure Suit Larry quiz was pretty funny. We had an idiot roomate in college who had to beg us to take the quiz for him so he could play. He just Could Not get 4 out of 5 general knowledge questions right.

I think the quiz was meant less as actual age verification and more as humor.

Does anyone remember the pulp spoof text adventure Leather Goddesses of Phobos? The game asked you your age early on and if you tried to set it to "lewd" later on (a mostly harmless setting) it would rebuke you if you weren't old enough.
