Been waiting to hear the results on this. Outstanding news. Will have to wait and see if he will really accept the result though. Somehow I doubt he will.

Good.

Still isn't my country though.

Huh?

2007-12-03 12:53:09 AM
I wonder how long it'll take Hugo to nullify the results of the vote and just go ahead and keep re-electing himself to office?

Bonus points if he blames this defeat on the CIA and/or George Bush.

"This was a photo finish," Chavez said immediately after the vote, adding that unlike past Venezuelan governments, his respects the people's will.

At least until the next round of "disappearances," that is.

Is this the cue for the apologist to condemn election results they don't like?

You're just lucky I'm on a slow connection, mister.

Seriously though, good for constitutional government.

So Venezuela has fair elections? I'm confused since he is a virtual dictator, or so I was told, and those people don't allow free elections.

2007-12-03 12:54:53 AM
I have a feeling he will keep proposing the changes until the voters come to his way thinking.

OTOH, if the changes went through, I think he would run the country into the ground economically.

Yeah, but unlike Castro, Hugo doesen't have Che around to murder political dissidents. He might have to actually play it straight - at least for a while anyway.

The jury is still out on that. Give Hugo some time to formulate a response.

And his next step will be to consult with Vladmir Putin and Pervez Musharraf, only to share a laugh over this minor inconvenience.

Maybe they're free elections as long as they vote for what he wants them to vote for.

True, but who knows what goons this loon has around to do his bidding. The MSM doesn't seem to cover the intricacies of Venezuelan politics and life, so I will just say I don't know.

I too will throw in a "liberal who cheers this victory for government by the people" comment. I just don't believe Chavez's words.

2007-12-03 12:58:19 AM
Great, until he annuls the election due to Western Interference. Please, Chavez, DIAF.

2007-12-03 12:58:26 AM
Dont care.

2007-12-03 12:58:28 AM
I wonder if he'll put up another referendum, addressing specifically the changes he needs to make to retain power as opposed to the ones he wants to make to expand it. Give it a few months.

2007-12-03 12:58:33 AM
Well, now he's down to the options of actually leave power *gasp*, or going full-blown dictator.

Anyone care to run odds?

There was actually a lot of hope for Chavez a few years back with his petro-populism. Then he started acting all crazy-like.

You're out of bonus points - those went to Musharref for blaming activist judges.

Yeah, I actually don't believe what I wrote, just trying to have some fun. I am surprised that he slipped up this much. Or maybe that was the point, so now he can point to these elections and say that Venezuela is free. That seems more logical.

Shiat, I could almost see that happening. Claim the US backed efforts to alter the vote, and that the corrected vote count ends in a win for him.

I don't know. He'd have to throw the Army at the people, the Army being the organization which nearly ousted him from power back in 2002. Doesn't seem like a wise option, even for him. Though he does have that fancy paramilitary force of thugs to fall back on this time...

Pats by 27.5. Over/under is 36.
