Car alarms are worthless as anti-theft devices. These guys have a pretty creative way of dealing with offending car owners without permanently vandalizing their property. I say kudos!

What a farking nutball. Who lives in farkING LOWER MANHATTAN and complains about the noise?

You want quiet? Move to VT.

Tape a sign to my car with WOOD GLUE (not easily removable) and I'll punch the smirk off your face, old man.

It is also worthy to note that he admits in a newspaper to committing a trespass to property and vandalism.

me too. Alarms are farking annoying and useless.

A car alarm that only goes off for 5 minutes then sends an SMS to the owner would be far more effective.

A better solution would be a portable electro magnetic pulse generator. You roll it under the clueless idiots car, back away and trigger. Instant silence and the smell of fried electronics will clear away quickly.

Heck. I think I have a new model for a franchise. 1-800-silence.

Question: Can you actually disable your car alarm? I thought in modern cars, they got armed automatically when you locked up. In that case, you're penalizing the owner when s/he has no idea that it's happening and no way to stop it.

I want to find an acoustic engineer who will build me a special car stereo. It will be outfitted with microphones on the outside of the car, and will act as a huge destructive interference generator. One of those idiot ricer boomcars comes up next to me, I crank the volume, and their car goes SILENT, baby.

Think I could make a couple of bucks selling those?

My first reaction was an eyeroll. Manhattan, dude, accept that noise is. But then I looked at those times again. After two and a half hours of car alarm, wood glue seems like a pretty restrained reaction.

Car alarms are more or less pointless and are certainly annoying, but at least cases like this are unintentional. A much bigger issue is improper use of CAR HORNS.

A car horn is a safety device. The only acceptable use of a car horn is to prevent a dangerous situation or accident. You should tap it once or twice briefly for that purpose ONLY.

If you honk your car horn to call out the kids who carpool with you at 7AM or pick up your girlfriend for the movies at 11PM in a quiet neighborhood, you deserve a wood-glued windshield 100x more than the woman in the article does.

And for all of you people who lean on your horn for 60 seconds every time you perceive somebody as cutting you off, stealing "your" parking space, or doing anything you don't approve of on the road, DIAF you road-raging, noise-polluting asshat. All you're doing is making the situation more confusing and dangerous for everyone around you, especially yourself. You're lucky the person in front of you doesn't get out of their car and beat the ever-loving shiat out of you for blasting them with a loud noise over some perceived minor infraction. Who died and made you the traffic police you ego-maniacal retard? Just STFU, forget it ever happened, and drive away. Honking your horn does absolutely NOTHING to make the person a better driver and eventually somebody will be crazy enough to get out of their car and beat you.

2007-12-03 03:05:01 AM
I don't get car alarms. If car owners think I'm going to rush outside and protect their car from theft while they are shopping 3 miles away then they've got to be crazy. I'd rather the car were stolen so it was causing a problem elsewhere. The law in the uk is the alarm can't go on for more than 30 seconds, but of course that just means they just stop for 10 seconds then start again.

2007-12-03 03:09:35 AM
If your car really was being stolen the alarm will either be off in seconds or by-passed to begin with.

Some bastard around here drives by multiple times per day, at various times, honking their horn 5-6 times in a row. Every day. Has not missed one day in the past 2 months. Sometimes it's at 10am. Sometimes it's 3pm, 5pm, 8pm, 10pm. Hell, I think sometimes they've done it at 1am or later. It's damn annoying.

2007-12-03 03:15:51 AM
Most people that I know with car alarms hate them, but tolerate them in their car because of what insurance would do otherwise. It's no excuse for letting the car aggravate a neighborhood for hours (or even minutes) on end, though.

The only problem I have with this guy is that his methods aren't actually effective in stopping the problem. It's a nice bit of revenge, sure, but it doesn't make the car any quieter.

2007-12-03 03:20:57 AM

I thought there were laws restricting alarms in NYC.

...Excessive alarm use is illegal in New York City. The Goodman- Grannis law, which was passed in 1992, requires all car alarms to shut off automatically within three minutes. If they don't, the owner can be subjected to some fairly steep fines.

Here in Sydney Australia, that's not just an idea, it's the Law (well, sans the SMS part.) All car and house alarms go silent and blinky-lights only after 5 or 10 minutes. Alarms on buildings in industrial parks? Not so much unfortunately - those suckers go *ALL* weekend... :-/

Bad move allowing the paper to show his face. You put wood glue on somebody's $30,000 piece of property, you pretty much deserve whatever you get.

This was a big problem when I lived in dorms. If you buy a car alarm that keeps going off for several hours, you're going to learn the hard way that there are people who are even bigger pricks than you are.

This guy is my farking hero. I might have to try a variation of this on my idiot neighbors and their all-night parties. This year alone, there have been a total of 18,102 car-alarm complaints and 166 tickets (which range in penalty from $175 to $700) issued.

There's your problem.
Either issue tickets more often, or make the fines steeper.

Duly noted. As subby, it was a toss-up. I considered the scenario of the poor sap who got called away while someone actually messed with his car, and then really needed his car right away (like maybe for a medical emergency), only to find it temporarily unusable. But I wanted to get a greenlight, so I played the odds.

Somebody used to do that every day on my street as well. I was in my thin walled apartment and it woke me up every single morning for a few weeks. One morning, I woke up early and waited for them outside. I walked up to their car window and had a colorful conversation with the soccer-mom driving the red minivan, explaining to her the proper use of car horns. She didn't exactly appreciate my explanation, but it never happened again.

THought of doing this myself but was afraid I'd be arrested for vandalizing cars.

But I DO spit stick notes berating the car owner for inconsideration and informing them that the police have been called and a tow truck summoned.

Car alarms are worthless as anti-theft devices.

Indeed. What sort of idiot believes that some noise no one pays attention to* will deter a thief?

While I was trying to get to sleep one summer's night, a car pulled up outside my window. 20 minutes later it hadn't moved on, and the engine was still running.

I went outside and spoke to the driver. I pointed to my window, and explained that I was trying to get to sleep. I asked him if he would shut his engine off, or move on elsewhere.

To my amazement, he apologised and moved on. Sometimes people can be civilised about their behaviour disturbing others.

What a pretentious douchenozzle! Yeah, car alarms suck... But as others have posted before me, if you don't like city noise, DON'T LIVE IN THE HEART OF A FRAKKING CITY! Vigilante justice has a tendency to backfire every once in a while. What if he did that to some gang banger and was caught red handed... I think the business end of a loaded .22 would wipe off his smug sense of self righteousness in an instant.

The kind of people who need it the most probably aren't considerate enough to buy something like that. The police should just enforce that "car alarms must turn themselves off after 5 minutes" rule.

Mars232: //grow a pair,car thieves are RARE

I know some people who would like to disagree with you.

I have to second the bypassed alarm thing, though. If someone is trying to steal your car, you will not hear it. It's really not all that difficult.

Confoundit: The kind of people who need it the most probably aren't considerate enough to buy something like that. The police should just enforce that "car alarms must turn themselves off after 5 minutes" rule.

Most (something like 80%) of all car alarms are either pre-installed from the factory or installed in the dealership to raise sticker prices by a grand or so. Most consumers, unless they're buying the cheapest basic models, don't really have an option about car alarms anymore, so it's really not fair to blame them. The SMS alarm thing is in the works, though, from what I hear. In fact, if you have a car with OnStar, it does something very similar. My car pages my phone via bluetooth or wifi if I'm out of range of bluetooth and it's available, but I built it myself.

You don't perhaps live in a neighborhood with a deaf person in it, do you? Because back when I was young and foolish, I would always drive past this sign on my way to work at the mall that said "Deaf Child" and we would always honk our horn repeatedly....you know, to warn the deaf child not to play in the street.

In one of my old places, someone went away for christmas break and left their car on the road. Well the alarm went off, and never turned off until the battery basically died, took almost a day. All that happened to them was someone left a note on their car saying: "Everyone on (our street name) hates you." even like 2-3 days after the battery all but died you could hear the alarm chirp ever so quietly when you walked by it
