Good point, coldandtired.

Check out this article. It turns out that the teddy bear was named Mohammad after one of the kids in the class. Hmmmm, if Sudan wants to be consistent, I guess they should lash the kid's parents (or, going on the Muslim-mysogynistic train, maybe just the mom) for giving the kid such a "blasphemous" name.

2007-11-29 11:02:32 AM
Yeah. And it's not like many in the western world label anything any muslim does as a muslim ("Islamofascist") plot against the western world and our freedoms.

I'm guilty of 2/3. I have no respect for religion, muslim or otherwise, I insult them whenever I get a chance, and I show contempt for religion/superstition.

I sense redundancy.

The xtians are more irritating only because they're closer, imo. Most of xtian fundies don't riot. They're more insidious, sneaking around and getting laws passed. OK, I don't know which is worse.

lukelightning: What people are forgetting is that the bear was named by muslim children. The class had a contest to name it and Muhammad was the most popular name chosen.

Though I guess it's good that the focus is on the teacher, otherwise they'd be trying to lynch the children.

It's much easier to blame things on women.

Yeah, it's like talking to Christians, they don't listen to reason.

In before random unrelated Christian comment. Oh wait, too late. Hahahah.

Don't worry, I know you're just fitting in your Christian comment due to the lack of Christian articles like this. Prove the book of revelations right more, imo.

This gives me a wonderful idea for a sociological experiment. What if someone were to forward a Fark thead - such as this one - to a radical Islamofascist group who happened to have sssorted hacker types among their minions, with the helpful advice that there were haters of fundamentalist religion posting here? The eventual results might be quite interesting.

So how many people are named Muhammad/Mohammad in the world again?

Why no uproar about that?

BTW, I'm seriously. I don't understand the difference. I would think a person naming themselves after Muhammad would be worse, putting themselves on the same level.

'Cept last time I checked, Christians weren't jailing and beating people for naming a teddy bear. Not recently, anyway.

The part of my being that knows that there are Muslims who are normal, hard working folks who just want to live, work, and play like other normal people is being eclipsed by the part of my being that just wants to drop the big one over there and call it a day.

I know that's wrong. I sincerely wish I didn't increasingly feel that way. But I do.

The bit TFA doesn't mention is that each of the kids was to take Mohammed the bear home for the weekend and write a diary about what they did with him. The teacher sent a letter to each of the parents to this effect. I'm wondering if she's as innocent as we're being lead to believe and that she wasn't, in fact, pulling their chains.

I'm not saying that the appropriate punishment for insulting their religion is imprisonment, nor that they're not antidiluvian savages. I'm just wondering if the teacher was teasing a little and got the reaction you get when you poke crazy people with sticks.

"Sudan's top clerics have called for the full measure of the law to be used against Mrs Gibbons and labelled her actions part of a Western plot against Islam."

Oh, then naming the maggots in the back dumpster Muhammad won't offend them worse. They already want us dead so I may as well go all the way.

Nothing surprises me about them anymore.

Picture this scenario in the U.S. A teacher in a classroom in Texas decides to do a similar assignment. Her class includes several evangelical students and some hispanic students, and the class decides to name the bear after a classmate, Jesus. If this happened in the U.S. a couple of parenbts might be annoyed, but more would understand that it is a common name, so if you can't give the name to a stuffed teddy bear, why give it to your kid?

2007-11-29 01:59:20 PM
I know that thread's probably over by now, but did anyone commenting here actually read the article? It's mostly about how both Britain and Sudan want to smooth this over so as not to make a big diplomatic incident about it, with both countries seeming fairly certain that nothing major will come of this. The nutjob clerics get, like, 2 sentences about them.

Show some proportion, people!

Umm, most evangelicals would love to have a teddy bear named Jesus.

Yeah, like maybe the entire class of children who named the bear and have, by and large, come to their teacher's defense in this matter? Why the Hell does this have to be made into such an "us and them" thing? Why is it so coonting easy to dehumanize an entire group of people that I see it done on a daily basic? What the coont is wrong with the world where it is easier to demonize than to even TRY to understand each other? Why is it now the easier idea to kill than to comprehend? What the Hell?
