PopeUrban: The part of my being that knows that there are Muslims who are normal, hard working folks who just want to live, work, and play like other normal people is being eclipsed by the part of my being that just wants to drop the big one over there and call it a day.

Yeah, like maybe the entire class of children who named the bear and have, by and large, come to their teacher's defense in this matter? Why the Hell does this have to be made into such an "us and them" thing? Why is it so coonting easy to dehumanize an entire group of people that I see it done on a daily basic? What the coont is wrong with the world where it is easier to demonize than to even TRY to understand each other? Why is it now the easier idea to kill than to comprehend? What the Hell? WHAT THE HELL? WHAT THE coontING HELL

Your Meds. Let me show you them.

Humorous answers are all well and good, but I was honestly serious.

Does anyone know why the distinction is allowed? It has honestly always puzzled me.

greentea1985: Picture this scenario in the U.S. A teacher in a classroom in Texas decides to do a similar assignment. Her class includes several evangelical students and some hispanic students, and the class decides to name the bear after a classmate, Jesus. If this happened in the U.S. a couple of parenbts might be annoyed, but more would understand that it is a common name, so if you can't give the name to a stuffed teddy bear, why give it to your kid?

Ok, slightly off-kilter analogy, but whatever.

Basically what it boils down to is that we have a wonderful thing called separation of church and state here in the U.S.A. and it's one of the reasons why we can live like civilized people instead of reactionary neanderthals.

The fact that "insulting islam" is even a crime in Sudan is a big problem and an indicator that Sudan is going to suck giant salty Muhammad balls for years to come.

Somacandra: lajimi: Can we just start killing these savages?...It's becoming more and more obvious that these walking laundry baskets don't deserve to breathe the same air as humans.

Make sure you don't validate anyone's paranoia now...because that MIGHT be counterproductive, dumbass.

Yeah, whatever, Mecca is that way, Mohammed. Don't forget your beanie.

I just took a shiat and named it Muhammed. Hope the Prophet doesn't mind, it probably smells like he did anyway.

ScudEast: The bit TFA doesn't mention is that each of the kids was to take Mohammed the bear home for the weekend and write a diary about what they did with him. The teacher sent a letter to each of the parents to this effect. I'm wondering if she's as innocent as we're being lead to believe and that she wasn't, in fact, pulling their chains.

I'm not saying that the appropriate punishment for insulting their religion is imprisonment, nor that they're not antidiluvian savages. I'm just wondering if the teacher was teasing a little and got the reaction you get when you poke crazy people with sticks.

So if the kids had voted to name the bear Fatima everything would be cool?

Oh, let's not forget -- Darfur is in Sudan.

Ah yes, unquoted, unnamed "top" clerics say it's a plot against Islam. Only, it seems, everyone else seemed to be very quotable in the article.

fine, we will start by hunting your ass down, after all, there is no hate more intense than the hate of an anti-religious bigot.

Tat'dGreaser: Afternoon_Delight: Ain't islam great?

FTA: But in Britain, the Islamic Human Rights Commission was among Muslim groups to call for her immediate release.

Sounds like it.

Yeah, but guess what. They're in Britain under non-Islamic rule. You put the Muslims in charge, womens rights go out the door & brutality reigns.

Dubya's_Coke_Dealer: SlothB77: SlothB77: congratulations useful idiot schoolteacher who thought if we could just talk to them and understand them, we can reason with them. you will be the first to meet the consequences of such naiveties.

Yeah, it's like talking to Christians, they don't listen to reason.

Christians aren't threatening to lash and stone people to death. Christian women have rights too. Unlike Islam, it's pretty dandy.

Gee, I don't know Pope, why don't you go ask Muslims how they find it so easy to dehumanize people?

You go try to understand stoning rape victims. I'll call a spade a spade. The religion is full of savage beasts.

Tats isnt here yet?

Wow! She is probably reading this... so here it goes.

Tats, we love you, we want you to come back to us. You were foretold, in the scriptures to convert us to Judaism.

If you arent, then its ok too. We understand you are really a branch of the Mossad to try and change the views of Judaism around the world by explaining that only you know the answers to everything, including how quebecquers calls the poutine...

Two Muslim women meet at a cafe after not having seen each other for a few years.

Mother 1: ....and this is a picture of Ahmed. He would have been 18 next month.
Mother 2: Martyred?
Mother 1: Yes. And here is a picture of his brother Amin. Look at that smile. He would have been 14 this year.
Mother 2: Martyred?
Mother 1: Yes.
Mother 2: (lets out a big sigh). They blow up so fast, don't they?

glassa: Christians aren't threatening to lash and stone people to death.

Are you sure about that?

This scenario should be held up by smug atheists everywhere with the catchcry of "See? SEE!?"

I feel obliged to point out that, as usual, there's a huge gap between the authorities and the locals in this situation. It seems most of the locals are appalled at how Gillian Gibbons is being treated. Don't let that get in the way of advocating their murder though. This is the internet, after all.

It is the animal thing. She is allowing an animal to be called the name of their prophet. I think it is mainly the fact that she is an outsider and regardless of how much she is helping their children, someone will take it as influencing them. It would be like a teacher telling a bunch of Mormons that their new pet will be called "Joseph Smith." Someone will think you might be trying to make fun.

On the other hand, I can go with the analysis of the scholarly Mrs. Garrison:
Now put yourself in the shoes of a Muslim. It's Friday night, but you can't have sex, and you can't jack off. There's sand in your eyes and probably in the crack of your ass, and then some cartoon comes along from a country where people are getting laid, and mocks your prophet. Well you know what? I'd be pretty pissed off too!

Calls in Sudan for Execution of Briton

Nov 30, 8:00 AM (ET)

By MOHAMED OSMAN

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - Thousands of Sudanese, many armed with clubs and knives, rallied Friday in a central square and demanded the execution of a British teacher convicted of insulting Islam for allowing her students to name a teddy bear "Muhammad."

The protesters streamed out of mosques after Friday sermons, as pickup trucks with loudspeakers blared messages against Gillian Gibbons, the teacher who was sentenced Thursday to 15 days in prison and deportation.

They massed in central Martyrs Square, outside the presidential palace, where hundreds of riot police were deployed, although they did not attempt to stop the rally.

"Shame, shame on the U.K.," protesters chanted.

They called for Gibbons' execution, saying, "No tolerance: Execution," and "Kill her, kill her by firing squad."

The women's prison where Gibbons is being held is far from the site, as is the Unity High School where she taught, which is under heavy security protection.

I like to think that there's a good side to everything, and this is a case where I could easily find the bright side of genocide.
