OK, WTF. I'm not familiar with British educational system since I'm from the states. Is she already done with what I would consider High School and already in some sort of college that she can't pay for, or do people have to pay to got to "High School" in England. I guess a 3rd choice could be she's been in some sort of private school.

What sucks is that if the British would just be willing to pay a little more in taxes the government would be able to support her (and people like her) thru graduation so she could become a productive member of society. Instead they're only willing to pay for enourmous castles for the monarchy, crown jewels for the royal family, and security cameras on every corner.

She's still in what you would would think of as High School, it is government funded, there are no fees. She works a part time job to support herself since Mum and Dad are ex-parents. The income from this part time job puts her over the threshold where she is entitled to state benefits (which include payment of rent on a council house/flat). She is being forced, therefore, to give up schooling in order to work full time to make up for the lost income and keep body and soul together.

I'd hit it. Two, maybe three times.

The school staff to take up a collection to pay her way for her? shiat happened, she got pointed to a loophole to game the system and instead of saying, "No, I'll try something else," she raised a fuss about it. It might not be a good option, but when you lose both your parents and are thrust head-first into real life, there probably aren't any good options. WTG farking over the people vaguely trying to help you. The administrators are no saints here, but when you're up against a wall like that you're really not their concern anymore. Their job is to get everyone through, not hand-hold problem cases. Yeah, it's tragic, there are probably a dozen other equally tragic stories at that school alone who haven't gone running to cry to the press.

I think that's the problem right there. The school shouldn't be taking care of her, but (unless this is a private school) it has an obligation to, just as you said, do what it takes to get her through the system. If it's private then they only have an obligation to cash her check and she can go fark herself.

This is the welfare trap, and it is worse in the US because of the shiat rules put in place, but the situation is the same: this person works hard and life dealt her a crappy hand. She has the grades and strength to keep going and NOT be a hooker, dealer, and she won't even have kids just to get a welfare check (dumbest thing ever). But the rules don't want to "reward" people for working by then claiming benefits at the same time, but benefits have so many strings attached that they force people to do things that aren't really in their best interest (like sell drugs or be a hooker because those earnings don't have to be reported; or have more kids since some formulas pay based on the crotchlings).

This is sad. It's a failure of both points of view, liberal and conservative, because pols are more concerned with their votes than the voters.

This kid lost her mother, undoubtably one of the worst things to happen to (many) women, and I can understand some Ben & Jerry's therapy. Hell, even a lot. Then Dad goes and breaks land speed records to join Mom. She's a teenager, still in high school, and these aren't events you want happening close together even when you're 50, much less 17. Cut the kid some slack.

This is actually fairly common - girls getting pregnant so they can collect government handouts. Why do you think the ghettos are such hellholes? The girl in this instance is white - there are poor whites too - but the same principle applies.

How much does welfare pay? Is it more than £150? If so, quit your job. If not, get a better job. Stop going to a private school. No, wait. Take your plight to the public and wait for the handout.

Not in high school. If she's lucky she could live in a homeless shelter, or maybe crash in a generous friend's family's basement or garage. Once she makes it through high school, if she has good enough grades and test scores for college, then she could get student loans if she could jump through the proper hoops to convince the appropriate people that she is truly independent of her parents.

In almost every state in the US someone between the ages of 18 and 65 cannot get any food stamps, welfare, medicaid, workforce training, rent assistance, heat subsidy, etc. unless they are totally disabled under SS guidelines or squirting out a welfare baby. The few states with exceptions are very limited exceptions (like you can get a free mammogram once in a great while if you can afford to travel where they're being done in the slim window of time they're available.)

A young woman like this, smart and with major potential but stuck in a horrible situation, will not get a singular dollar of public assistance unless she is with child. Because apparently the working poor aren't human beings unless they are breeding kids they can't afford starting the day they age out of the system and making themselves lifers in that system.

Wait a sec... Two parents died and she's broke? No insurance? I had my mother die when I was a teenager, and it wiped away all family debt. If my dad would have died, I would have been filthy rich.

Hell, here in the US, anyone under 18 or still in High School collects their parents social security income (well, their guardian collects it, but it has to be accountable, and spent on the child). I was getting $400 dollars a month from my mother's crappy income and I was earning around $7,500 a year while in school with my part time job. If both parents had died, I would have been getting at least $1,500 a month from social security, their estate debt would have been paid off, plus nearly an extra $750,000 from insurance when I turned 18.

This girl's in a tough situation. Just goes to show you that the way social services are often set up (in the US, and apparently in the UK as well) is to soothe the consciences of the policymakers and not to actually help people, or there'd be some way to work this out. Best case scenario -- maybe she's got a friend or a teacher who might take her in?

As for hittability: I might, I might not. The fact that she's aiming high in her ambitions for life would certainly work in her favor, but I'm kind of shameful in the shallowness department.
