//Seriously...Isn't there a better way to tell your kid that you want to completely ruin his ability to interact with anyone not named "Mommy" or "Daddy" until the day he dies?

No kidding. I knew an entire family of home-schooled kids once, and they're all completely farked up. They can't even live normal lives now because they have no idea what the real world is like. The thing is, you wouldn't hire someone without an education degree to teach kids at a school (well, not in Canada anyway), so what makes average parents think they're qualified to teach their kids?

I work at a college that trains teachers. A good one, too. Expensive, private school.

Seeing the raw material being turned into teachers, I weep for my child.

I had to explain to a graduate of this school, subsequently hired in a position of some responsibility, the meaning of the word "phallic".

You have to remember, also, that a large number of those who decide to homeschool do it for either religious reasons, or because the public school system is poor, they can't afford a good private school, and they are smart enough to do something about it.

As for parents abrogating their responsibility for teaching their children, and sloughing it off onto the public school system, *I* certainly won't do that.

My not-quite 4 year old son is learning how to read and write (So far, he can write his name, and "Mom", "Cat", "Hat", and several other simple words). He does this solely because my wife and I make it our business to teach him *BEFORE* he gets into school. I don't think we will stop either, once he matriculates.

Maybe prison life isn't so bad and I should get myself incarcerated.

Yea, homeschooling really farked up my life. I'm 25, married, have a mortgage and a job as a web developer for a Fortune 100 company My parents really dropped the ball on that one...

And before you go all crazy about social interaction, this is the woman I married:

Hal B. Sure: Yes. Many times and in every room of my house. And a few rooms in my neighbor's house. And the car. And the backyard. And while waiting in line at the grocery store.

I am sorry but women older than 35 are not attractive at all. At that age nature has started the downward spiral from a hot, tight assed, smooth legs, sexual goddess to a unhappy bitter, sagging, guys like me cause I am nice old hag.

Mother Nature gets the last laugh.

I dated a teacher in high school, yeah. It didn't make me cooler. And a lot of you are like "that's cause you were homeschooled." Okay, valid point. That doesn't mean I'm a bad person, it just means statistically I'm smarter than you. And I have game.

Hey, now my wife and I are homeschooling our three kids and I have sex with the teacher all the time. Also, my kids are pretty well behaved for being 10 and 8 as compaired to other kids the same age homeschooled or not. I think the problem with you guys that only know poorly adjusted homeschooled kids are the fact that you only hang out with poorly adjusted people. I think if you look at your circle of friends you will find that most of them are poorly adjusted no matter where they went to school.

Then again, what would I know? Other than who is going to the gym in 26 minutes in his BMW 318i.

Thats sad, from my experiance women don't really figure out the whole enjoy sex, not do it because he wants too thing till they are about 35. The best part is at 40, when the women figure out that they want sex. Best sex partner I ever had was a 48yo art teacher(I was 23, so it wasn't that weird). She taught me quite a few things too. Mmmm, college prof. sex.

vune: frogjelly: I went in my senior year smarter than 98% of the teachers in the school.

Funny, the biggest idiots in my school also thought they were smarter than all the teachers.

I don't know that I was particularly SMARTER than my teachers (although I did correct a few in my day), but I did tend to piss some off because I was smart enough to game the system.

Back in the day, in New York State, if you took Regents courses, your grade for the year would be either your course grade, or your Regents Test score in that subject, whichever was higher.

Well, I decided that I didn't want to do any course work in 11th grade English, so I ended up with a 54% for the course, a good solid "F". However, when I took the Regents exam for that course, I got a 92, which ended up being my grade for the year. Pissed my English teacher off to no end.

I think they eventually changed the rule so that you had to actually pass the course to take the Regents. Had that been true, I would have just put in the minimum effort to get a chance to take the Regents. Of course, if my English teacher had put out*, I would have made more of an effort.

*Actually, I think she did, just not until after you graduated.

it seems a lot of people are prejudiced against homeschooling. Did you know home schooled kids do just as well or better in aptitude tests than public school students. And as an added bonus, home schooled kids don't get the socialist indoctrination they would in public schools. seems like a win/win to me....

Haha! I think the thing most people are missing is that kids are screwed up everywhere. For every "weirdo" homeschooled kid you know there are more than likely 3-4 public school weirdos as well...

The problem isn't with homeschooling, the problem is with parents. Some parents actually take the time to teach their children about life while others just indoctrinate them (either intentionally or passively). Makes no difference if you're in public, private or home schooled, if your parents don't do their part, chances are you're going to have some problems... Or I should say it is likely...

How the fark would you know that?

By the time your 18 you still know nothing of the world. Wait until your 40 to think about saying something like that.

I'm 40, and I probably was smarter than 98% of the teachers in my school when I was 18. I can think of a couple of exceptions, so actually make that smarter than about 67% of my teachers. Still, a decent majority.

Poster makes a comment about how homeschoolers fail miserably in life. Tell me, if you can't share your "successes", whatever they may be, how else do you show what he is saying to be false? If homeschoolers are in fact crazy and fail miserably then he is right.

I don't say it like I'm better than other people, I know there are plenty of farkers married to beautiful people, have better jobs than me and will be more successful in life (by American standards) than I ever will be.

The point is, homeschoolers such as myself aren't doomed to be failures by any standard anymore than a public school kid is... I am just showing living, visible proof.
