Here in Pennsyltucky, our Attorney General spent a ton of money doing satellite interviews with TV news stations about how to "protect yourself on Cyber Monday."

For a reporter on a slow news day, what better way to ease back to work from the tryptophan coma?

Mr. Coffee Nerves: For a reporter on a slow news day, what better way to ease back to work from the tryptophan coma?

I really wonder if that whole "tryptophan" thing is true.

I stuff myself only a couple of times a year, and I'm not more tired on Thanksgiving than I am on the 4th after 18 pounds of hamburger and hotdogs*.

/*that was hyperbole :)

I eat turkey sandwiches 2-3 times a week. I don't think its true. I've heard tryptophan can cause that effect on an empty stomach, but I'm pretty sure we are just going into food comas on Thanksgiving.

that's a relief. as long as it isn't real then everything is cool.

Well it doesn't seem to be true, if you can true wikipedia

One widely-held belief is that heavy consumption of turkey meat (as for example in a Thanksgiving feast) results in drowsiness, which has been attributed to high levels of tryptophan contained in turkey.[43][44][45] While turkey does contain high levels of tryptophan, the amount is comparable to that contained in most other meats.[12] Furthermore, postprandial Thanksgiving sedation may have more to do with what is consumed along with the turkey, in particular carbohydrates, rather than the turkey itself.

...

Hence, these data suggest that "feast-induced drowsiness," and in particular, the common American post-Thanksgiving dinner drowsiness, may be the result of a heavy meal rich in carbohydrates which, via an indirect mechanism, increases the production of sleep-promoting serotonin and melatonin in the brain.[46][47][48][49]

SchlingFo: I really wonder if that whole "tryptophan" thing is true.

I'm pretty sure there isn't sufficient levels of tryptophan in turkey to cause drowsiness. Maybe it has something to do with all the carbs we eat?

Well, if the OTHER "slow news day" story over the weekend has any truth to is, it's not the turkey-based amino acids as the culprit -- it's the metric assload of carbs we ram into our maws this weekend.

Apparently shotgunning pans of filling and shoving yams into every orifice sends one to dreamland.

It's still a lot easier to slip a roofie into someone's drink than conning them into eating seventeen pounds of au gratin potatoes, tho.

Why do the call them "roofies" when the girls always pass out on the floor? They should call 'em "Floories". Or "Flo's", ebonically.

Except that as the noterity of Cyber Monday continues, companies like Smarthome offer free shipping up until and including Cyber Monday. So, it may not be the top day of the season, but it likely will continue momentum.

For those of you wondering about tryptophan causing sleepiness and who don't trust Wikipedia, I present Snopes' article on turkey causing sleepiness:
Link (new window)
Summed up: turkey doesn't have any more tryptophan than many other every day foods such as beef or milk. It's a large meal with lots of carbohydrates (and maybe a little alcohol) that knocks you out. No matter how many times I've said this to people, there's always some dumbass at my Thanksgiving meals who starts blabbing about tryptophan after the meal. It's probably the same person who uses the word "Irregardless" because they think it makes them sound intelligent when, in fact, it does the exact opposite.

I already finished all my online shopping (new window)for this year. Beats waiting before dark for the 1.5 MEGA pixel camera they're trying to hawk for $99.00 here locally. At least it comes with one of those flash bulbs you have to hold over your head..

Yeah, lots of subbies do it. I've noticed it on Fox a lot; their urls must be conductive to it.

It didn't exist until they started having Cyber Monday sales. Now I'm going to have to invent a shopping day a few weeks before my anniversary and see if it catches on.
