Tasing is not torture. It's an enhanced interrogation technique.

I submitted this yesterday with a much better headline: "The UN declares that Tasers and Celine Dion Music are forms of torture. Genocide Still OK"

Though one does have to admit that the police seem to be using the taser WAY more often than needed. They can't get away with beating the snot out of someone anymore because of all the video cameras, so they just zap them with high voltage electricity.

Though on the subject of torture. Who else here knows how to make a torture device out of some car batteries, sponges, jumper cables, rubber gloves and salt water?

It seems to me that with the string of accidents in Canada involving the taser there needs to be better training in their use. Just like banning police officers with guns is a student idea, the police should be properly instructed in how to subdue a criminal with a taser. Including that, they should know the risks involved with using a taser on a suspect and know when and when not to use it.

To me it boils down to a lack of proper training.

Canadian Canuck: To me it boils down to a lack of proper training.

as well as a lack of proper restraint in their use. It needs to be emphasized to them that these are LESS LETHAL, not non-lethal.

Crap... no more hilarious Taser videos....

Still, I agree- its a bit overused these days. It seems more like a first rather than last resort for way too many short fused cops who don't like to be questioned.

Um, police are trained quite adequately in the use of the taser. As part of such training they have to be tazed themselves so they know what it feels like.

Why don't they scrape a fork against a glass plate or play a kazoo? Even those things can become very annoying and get under their skin so they talk. Scraping fingernails on a chalkboard works wonders too.

Its a good thing american completely de-toothed the UN by completely failing to uphold and enforce its policies. Its almost like a self fulfilling prophecy, like revelations,or republican rule of government.

//if america backed the UN they would have 10X the power

Hal B. Sure: Tasing is not torture. It's an enhanced interrogation first-line compliance technique.

Or that's what the corrupt and lazy LEOs who tase anything walking would have you believe.

Would you stomach cops striking just about anyone with their baton / asp? No? Then why aren't you up in arms over them indiscriminately tasing people?

I suppose they could be considered a torture device, but so could a lot of things. I'm thinking that you could do a decent job of torturing someone with a hammer, or a lit candle, or even a CD played at a loud enough volume. Tasers have a proper use that I don't consider to be torture. That's not to say that people don't misuse them. But they have a legitimate purpose in limited circumstances.

No sane person actually says "sure, the cops can tase anyone, anytime, no problem".

I'm up in arms about cops abusing their authority, whether or not a taser is involved. But I would rather see some asshat tased than billy-clubbed.

You mean the UN does something that a lot of the world will listen too, but Americans will constantly base as something no one else in the world wants to listen too..

Just so you guys know the UN isn't this big horrible failure.. and a lot of the major failures may be averted if the US ever paid it's dues..

and I know that whole Rwanda thing is one you like to bring up.. when the peacekepeing missions are successful and million stay alive it's not news..

but when the US knows a genocide is going on and doesn't even tell the world what is going on for over 2 weeks.. well it's clear to see why the US world police weren't there.. there wasn't oil.. or a government to overthrow and install a friendly dictatorship which would murder it's people as your government asked them too..

But yes, please keep posting the UN bashing lines.. they're the same one american's have been using for over a decade easy..

maybe if American's stopped trying to undermine it's power @ every step? oh wait.. it's the NWO, going to over rule your government, with rules that have more effect.

You do know that treaty's your government signs and ratify takes precedence over domestic law right?

How can tasers be considered torture?? Its only used by highly responsible police officers as a last resort in situations where there is a danger to the officers and others around.

Next thing you'll be trying to convince me is officer are using Taser during traffic stops when someone refuses to sign the speeding ticket.

Perhaps I should rephrase. So, why aren't you up in arms, period?

Go ahead and argue you're offended, but I've yet to see anyone report on your storming of a law enforcement facility to express your disdain. No torches, no pitchforks. Are you actually backing your position with action?

Slap them with the glove, hit them over the head with the battery, pour salt water in their ears and jump rope with the jumper cables?

Speaking of torture, if anyone wants to read a recently published 900 page book on the subject, one of my profs recently published Torture and Democracy. Link (new window)

Posted it before - will post it again. If tasers are so damned dangerous how come I can't find a single reference to a COP getting killed by a taser. Most (but not all cops) are tased as a part of taser training. Tens of thousands of police officers have been tased, yet amazingly, none are dead.

I myself have been tased many times - from 1 or 2-second "drive stun" bursts (where the taser muzzle directly contacts your body) to the "full ride" with the wires (the 5-second full energy cycle that is applied when the probes are fired.) Does it hurt? Yes. Does it hurt alot? Yes. Could it be used to torture someone? Yes. But so can a ball peen hammer or a cigarette lighter.

I support the UN, but they really need to get a grip.

I've never seen anybody killed by a taser. I have however seen people who's lives have probably been saved by them. The first "live fire" taser deployment I saw was when a crack-crazed lunatic tore up his parents house, beat his mother half to death and ran outside ... with two giant kitchen knives. The responding officers located him a few houses away and he ran toward them, screaming, arms up in the air, a knife in each hand. The closest officer (who did not have a taser) drew his handgun to defend himself and was just drawing a bead when a second officer - who already had drawn his taser - managed to subdue the suspect with his M-26, dropping him in his tracks.

There is no doubt in my mind that this kid would have been shot - justifiably - and probably killed by the first officer, had the other cop not had his taser already unholstered. The M-26 taser saved this guy from getting shot.

This is an absolutely true story. Now I'm supposed to agree when the UN wants to ban them?

The tone of shrill sanctimony in this post is exactly the same as in your bio. Big points for consistency.

Keep up the misguided optimism about what the UN is capable of doing. China and Russia think you're cute. They'll whisper that to you while they fark you blind. Just remember: The US is ALWAYS the cause and solution to any problem.
