Well yeah, I mean, death gets rid of the flu pretty quickly.

2007-11-25 02:36:13 PM
Flu medicine does not make you get over the flu more quickly, it just suppresses the symptoms.

Robert1966: Flu medicine does not make you get over the flu more quickly, it just suppresses the symptoms.

exactly, and suppressing the symptoms will prolong the illness. Symptoms are your body's natural defenses against sickness. There is nothing to "cure" a virus.

My mom has been saying this for years.

Well, you have to admit her flu was cured.

HMO's might actually offer this kind of treatment.

gc.c

Flu medicines suppress symptoms only by a percentage. The symptoms are only helpful up to a point. High fevers need to be held under about 102, phlegm production has to be there, but low. Otherwise you get secondary infections (bronchitis, pneumonia and such). Coughing is useful to keep phlegm moving, but if it's tearing your throat or damaging chest muscles it causes more problems. Same with sneezing. Our bodies overreact and cause more damage then their worth.

Now, if they invent a flu medicine that eliminates ALL symptoms, that would be bad. But usually they just make things a little more tolerable.

Nonsense. My body is worth at least a gazillion pounds of damage. Perhaps your body has a different damage:worth ratio. I dunno.

No..... Tamiflu and Relenza are powerful anti-viral medications that prevent the replication of the influenza virus.... they will make you get over the flu more quickly and can prevent you from getting sick if taken preventively. They do nothing to suppress the symptoms of the flu.

There are all sorts of ways to attack the Avian flu. It's called a layered defense.

1) During an epidemic, avoid people who have the flu. Avoid those most likely to carry the flu. Be generally standoffish. Sick family members can give it to you just like strangers.

2) When out in public during an epidemic, use hand sanitizer at least six times a day, especially after touching things often touched by other people, like telephone handsets. Avoid touching your own face until after you have sanitized your hands. Avoid restrooms used by sick people.

3) If you have a lot, try to reduce mucous levels in your nose and sinuses by using nasal saline. This makes a prime breeding area for the virus less hospitable. Hot chicken soup also is good for this, as is gargling with salty water. And consume Cold-Eeze lozenges, because the zinc in them inhibits viral reproduction, and it is readily uptaken into the sinuses, unlike other zinc supplements.

4) Cranberry juice in quantity might (or might not) inhibit virus adhesion to cells. It has been proven to do so to some other viruses. But it takes a lot. If the virus can't adhere, it can't reproduce. Blueberries might have some similar effect, but it isn't known yet.

5) Listen up. America is full of people who experiment with ways to circumvent diseases. Someone might come up with a highly effective way of protecting or defending yourself.

Besides being a drug side effect, the agency said the behaviors alternately could result from an unusual strain of flu or a rare genetic reaction to the drug.

Or how about the ability for Japan as a Country to take medication side effects seriously and keep track of them and not so much care about the financial consequences it may have for the Big Pharm Industry.

Rumsfeld's growing stake in Tamiflu

Defense Secretary, ex-chairman of flu treatment rights holder, sees portfolio value growing.

October 31, 2005: 10:55 AM EST
By Nelson D. Schwartz, Fortune senior writer

NEW YORK (Fortune) - The prospect of a bird flu outbreak may be panicking people around the globe, but it's proving to be very good news for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other politically connected investors in Gilead Sciences, the California biotech company that owns the rights to Tamiflu, the influenza remedy that's now the most-sought after drug in the world.

See, that's really unfair. Why blame Tamiflu when we all know the flu causes that anyway?

Never take any drug unless:
1) the drug has been on the market for at least eight years, or
2) you have a death wish.

Drug companies just don't have any idea what these things DO for at least several years, aside from the results that they want to see.

But seriously. Those drugs shouldn't be taken unless someone's at risk of dieing from the flu(old or compromised immune system). Taking Tamaflu and Relenza prophylactically or when you could easily get over the flu without just breeds nastier resistant bugs. It's a legitimate question the FDA brings up, this could be a new strain of flu that likes to replicate in people's brains. Tamaflu and Relenza probably don't get past the blood brain barrier, selecting for flu viruses that can. Could be we're breeding an encephalitic flu.
Yet another reason marketing drugs to paranoid over protective mothers should be outlawed.

I took Tamiflu in Jan 2006. I had hallucinations AND convulsions with a half hour of taking it. I was not underage at the time, although my husband likes it when I pretend to be.

Bonus experience: Having the doctor in the emergency room ask if anyone could "corroborate my story" about the hallucinations... while I was having a convulsion. I'm going to mail that farker this article!

OK, The Boognish will bestow all of you with my GARUNTEEEEDD cure for the flu.

Step one, Open fifth of Jack Daniels
Step two, Drink Fifth of Jack Daniels
Step three, Get away from everyone. (after consuming a fifth of JD you tend to be a complete jackass to everyone else so please leave them alone for now.)
Step four, pass out!

When you wake up you will most likely have a hangover so treat that however you choose. Once the hangover is gone you should notice that your flu has left as well. I think its because nothing so small can live in a solution of JD and whateverthehellelse your made up of.

The great thing about it? If it doesnt work just keep trying till you get rid of the bug. I swear you will be cured!

Big Pharma is teh bad! We'd be so much better off rubbing leaves and twigs on ourselves. Besides, the people who deny the existence of HIV and sell "energy" water are so much more trustworthy. At least I know they aren't out to make a buck on untested remedies.

I got a prescription for Tamiflu during the bird flu scare of circa-Oct 2005 (I travel internationally, so considered it a bit of insurance in case I ended up somewhere and they quarantined the country or something). Still have it (good til Feb 2010). Sounds like it could be the next party drug! But given that I live on the 40th floor, I think I'll leave it be.
