Actually, these days it's become more of an "attractive" or "not attractive" thing. In the last couple years there have been two different cases of young black women in Illinois (one a college student at Illinois State U, another a pharma rep living in the Chicago area) who disappeared and they got lots of coverage here. The college student got coverage on CNN. Both of them were attractive women.

Basically, if they're attractive, or if there's a story behind it (i.e. the husband is particularly douchey, as has happened twice this year in the Chicago area), then it gets covered endlessly. Fugly missing women get no coverage.

Maybe it's different in the South though.

In a worst-case. . . don't ask.

You wouldn't do anything that stupid in Oshkosh, Topeka or Bakersfield, what makes you think it's safe in Paris, London or Munich? You go out in a strange city, and get drunk as hell with a bunch of guys you just met, you are asking for trouble.

I have lived most of my life in tourist towns, and it's a side of tourism no one talks about, least of all the Chamber of Commerce: Tourist comes down, gets in a fight with a local--he knows where to dump the body, and how to cover his tracks.

Or the tourist whacks a local in a fight, runs like hell. Cops don't know who he was, or where he came from. Or two tourists come down, but they bring their beef with them, and hash it out in the tourist town. One dies, the other runs; cops have no way of pinning a suspect, or even deciphering a motive.

Figure in a typical case, some college girl starts out in Orlando to see Disneyworld, then decides to go to Miami to see the Dolphins lose a football game, then down to Key West for Fantasyfest, to run around with bare tits and bodypaint. . . but she never makes it home.

If she met with foul play, there is no way to prove it; just a missing person, and there's a lot of places to look. If she tangled with a serial killer, her corpse is out in the Everglades, feeding the alligators.

A local gal would be reported missing by her family or her friends; a tourist is at a lot higher risk.

Yet time and again, I see tourists, women especially, take enormous risks in foreign towns, do stupid things they would never do at home.
