(ABC Action News)   There was a time, a time before cable. When the local anchorman reigned supreme. When the local anchorman never got a DUI. But that day is gone. (w/mugshot)   (abcactionnews.com ) divider line

"According to his arrest report, Hite's breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level of .124."

GASP! What, did he have 2 glasses of wine at dinner? Let him go.

At least they let him keep his toupe for the mugshot, that was nice of them.

Tampa residents with longer memories will recall that local news icon Hugh Smith was busted for soliciting a prostitute. Mid-1970's, I'd say.

He went on the aid, said he did it, it was stupid, he was sorry, and he was taking some time off. He was a behind-the-scenes news director for a while, but came back when ratings started to sag.

He's not the first. Reginald Roundtree from "Tampa Bay's 10" was also arrested for DUI (pleaded to reckless driving) last year. I think he lost his driving privileges for a year because he refused the breathalyzer.

Mugato: GASP! What, did he have 2 glasses of wine at dinner? Let him go.

That would imply common sense. No, you can't have a system with criteria. The system doesn't think.

FTA: Hite is scheduled to retire on November 28th, after working 30 years at WFLA.

Bah. In West Texas our side-by-side news anchors have affairs and bear children from them.

2007-11-21 08:59:39 AM
No, but he did accidentally bounce a county check to a hooker when he was mayor. (Before he was the anchorman)

library.thinkquest.org

He also decided to check out the "Homeless Problem" when he was an anchor, and went underground for a month. (Before that sort of thing was cool)

It was some of the best reporting I ever saw.

That's actually about 8 12-ounce beers for a 160 lb person in three hours, which is not unusual for someone who's interested in getting a nice buzz.

Of course there are numerous variables to take into account when measuring blood alcohol content via breath and recent studies indicate that it's not unusual for a Breathalyzer to underestimate BAC by 5 percent or more.

The weatherman from WAVY in Norfolk/Hampton Roads in the late 70s and early 80s was drunk about half the time he was on the air.

When he was visiting his cottage in Nags Head, he was drunk ALL the time. Nice guy and really knew his weather, but a total alky.

when i see stories like this, i mostly just check to see if it is in jacksonville.

it rarely is. in a way it's a moment of relief to see it isn't in my neck of the woods...

but in a way, i am always kind of hoping to see someone i know doing something stupid.

.124, unless you are an alcoholic or *serious* drinker is pretty messed up to be driving.

Ruin his life, no... But I 6 mos probation and a "this is how you drive when impaired" class should be enough to remind him that he is not so special that he can't follow the same rules as the rest of us.

Oh, and double his insurance for the next 10 years.

/Thanks for letting me play judge.

I'm sure this makes all Detroiters think back on the days of Bill Bonds.

this is totally unsubstantiated, but I'm pretty sure NBC 4's Jim Vance in D.C. is perpetually drunk on air.

And let's not forget about the totally hittable Nancy Alexander who got popped in Tampa a few years back. Never saw her on TV again, but she's managed to keep her radio career going.

At least Hite didn't beat up any little old chinese ladies and try to steal their car keys...

Met Bob once back in the day. Girlfriend at the time worked for a marketing company and they were shooting some kind of promotional video and Bob was going to be the spokesman.

Dude shows up 45 mins late and when he arrives announces "the talent is here, let's go".

I don't dislike the guy particularly because lots of folks who get just a little fame elevate their own self worth at the expense of others around them. Still, .124 is about half as much more than the legal limit and for a guy whose job it has been for 3 decades to report on things like the fatalities and ruined lives that DUI accidents cause...well, he knew better.

Good luck to him. Sucks that it had to happen a week before his retirement. Great timing there Bob.

If I remember correctly, this anchorman has had a host of personal problems with substances. I believe that this may be his second dui arrest. He may have had issues with weed. His son was also arrested for controlled substances and was recently in rehab.
