I think the cop is a genius. Whether he believes it or not, his comment has given this girl's case the media attention that it needed. Very strategic move.

The media is concerned with "who will want to see this".

The audience: self-absorbed, shallow white consumers who want to see things about people like themselves.

Not the audience: self-absorbed, shallow black people who don't care about people like themselves.

Duh.

shhh!!! Don't use big words. It confuses the trolls, and that just makes them angrier.

zealot_45: j0ndas: Blacks comprise only 10% or so of the population. Of course whites are going to get 8x or 9x the attention, just from demographics.

FTFA Police have named Peterson's 53-year-old husband, a former police officer, as a suspect in her disappearance. Drew Peterson denies any wrongdoing, but prosecutors also are investigating the 2004 death of his third wife, which they now believe was a homicide staged to look like an accident.

Ummmm, ya no shiat, we know this because it's all over the media, but thanks for the update on the Peterson case in the middle of the farking article.

Again, it is about RACE, not prettiness. Do not be alarmed at the thought. Just accept that people are racist.

Haven't we been over this shiat before? BOTH sides of this whole debate are not thinking it through rationally. Of course, some people are racist, and I am sure there are cases in which that is a factor. However, in the minds of the VAST majority of Americans, the color of your skin is completely irrelevant. Any situation in which a woman goes missing is a tragedy, and I think most of us view it that way, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with race. Of course those of the more radical persuasion have called me racist for refusing to honor the race card when played.

Hmmm... let's think about the demographics of people who watch CNN who this might be catering too. Perhaps one of the primary demographics of this is a) white suburban woman with families or b) women in general or even c) parents?

What one demographic might cover all three of these bases if you had to choose one to spotlight? I wonder what they might choose at a higher percentage.

It's about ad revenue folks. Everything is always about the revenue. How hard is that to figure out and deal with.

Thankfully, I was raised as a pragmatist, and I live my life accordingly. I fight the battles I can, I avoid the battles when necessary, and look to make the best life out of the circumstances as presented.

Hey, my wife caught MRSA when she gave birth to my second son, and there's nothing I can do about it. In order to get signed into a hospital, you have to sign a waiver of infection. I don't agree with it, but there's nothing that can be done. Sure I have opinions about the medical field, and I try to set up my life accordingly, but on a macro level there is nothing that can be done.

I don't agree with most things that generate revenue at the expense of doing things the right way, but that's the way the world runs. I just run my corner of it as neatly as possible, as my beliefs suggest I should run them.

Jamrock: The story and the girl have to be really appealing and juicy or they're not going to roll with it. Unfortunately a girl's looks or race or age can be a problem that can prevent a story from breaking out nationally. But in the end, the networks are going to roll with what is profitable

We have a winner!
Race? They don't care. They'll lambast us with a missing black girl- if she has an angle that can get them ratings. If she's ugly, fat, poor, not famous, nothing out of the ordinary... too bad, no airtime for you.
But a rich barbie-doll? Daughter of a senator? [insert any possible human interest angle]? Get her face up there!
The media, and network news are not really "news" outlets. They're the oldest form of "reality TV". They don't show you the truth, nor do they show you the whole picture. They show you just as much as they have to to make the most money.

Party Boy: /race is dumb.

White guys always say things like that...'race is dumb', 'race doesn't matter', 'racism is much better today!'...to you it doesn't matter. Yyou will never have a hard time renting a car or hailing a cab. If you go for a walk in a new neighborhood (say a friends neighborhood in the suburbs whom you are visiting) you won't have cops start to drive by and eventually follow you and maybe even pull you over for walking while 'not from around here'. You won't be followed around in convenience stores. No one will yell 'Go home, (insert ethnic slur here)!!" from their pickups at you.

Yup, race sure is dumb.

I'm from Mississippi, and I know the reason the media doesn't care is because it's Mississippi. If she ends up a victim of a hate crime, they'll be all over it. If some black crackhead did it, they'll continue to ignore it.

asmodeus224: Yup, race sure is dumb.

• the concept of "race" is a biologically debunked term for about a century now.
• Even still, people can't seem to agree on how its used. See OMB classifications above. (Thats the standard for all
"race" federal classifications.)

So, yes. "race" is dumb. Its a dumb term that is impossible to 'correctly' define, biologically; and, as a result, even federally mandated cultural definitions are equally silly[1] .

Crown_of_Shoes: The reason why we are concerned with missing white girls is because when lost they become exposed to the DANGERS of minorities.

When minority children are missing, it's a moot point. They are always exposed to minorities.

Bears repeating. Interacting with white middle class parents every day assures me that this is most definitely the underlying fear that drives up ratings for missing white girls. Think about who watches the news most often during the day, and you will see how it isn't a stretch.

2007-11-21 11:17:38 AM

looking through the other threads like this [1]
mama's_tasty_foods is the only one that, so far from my reading, seems to ask

Statistically, how many persons who go missing turn out to be victims of foul play? And is there any difference in that number among various races and genders?

If there is, that might dispel (or help confirm) the prejudice that some people assume is behind the differing treatment.

FTA: ``As far as the interest by the national media in the story, I think race probably had an impact,'' said McMillin, who is white. ``It's a small college in the South. It's the daughter of simple people who maybe are not important outside of their circle, and maybe we don't attach the same importance to them that we do for other people.''

agreed.

Hmmm, I guess a white guy would feel that race has no bearing and is even 'debunked'...I wonder how that works out in the real world?

Next time some cop pulls me off the street and frisks me or a couple of guys in pickup trucks chase me out of town I will be sure to let him know that their criteria is outdated and debunked according to the OMB.

Thanks PartyBoy!

asmodeus224: Next time some cop pulls me off the street and frisks me or a couple of guys in pickup trucks chase me out of town I will be sure to let him know that their criteria is outdated and debunked according to the OMB.

1) I can wholly infer that you haven't read my post since it isn't the OMB who has debunked race. You have failed to take the time to even consider the most mundane points in my post.

2) You are also very guilty of making very generalized assumptions on my interactions with the police due to my "race." I can easily point to various personal experiences of my own with the police, or with experiences I have had with other people, but this will have no effect on the arguments presented here.

Moreover, you are revealing rather uncomfortable things on your own biases when you make these sort of blanket assumptions about another person you have never met, solely based on their "race."
