Thurg: Franken [... is ...] Smug.

Can you please tell me why you think this?

2007-11-21 12:01:05 PM
Thurg: I am not a right winger in the least. But Franken comes off badly, at least to me, every time his mouth opens. I think his picture is actually in the dictionary, right next to the definition of Smug.

You seem to be confusing Franken's photo with one of Rush Limbaugh, GWB, or Dick Cheney...

I remember seeing Al Franken on SNL in the 70's with his partner Tom Davis. They used to do little skits at times. I remember one skit was regarding a political campaign. It was conceptual comedy that a lot of people hated but those who got loved. Then there was the Al Franken decade of the 80's.

MFL: The USO has to pay those fine acts and celebs to go on tour, I think Bill and Toby went on their own dime(s) respectively.

And Toby Keith was famous before Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue

Tobey Keith was a derrik hand in the oil fields who sang in the bars on the weekends before he was discovered. People have liked him since 1993 because he sings about real life stuff.

He's also a registered democrat.

Ya so what? I was talking about his music. He voted for Bush in 2004 and is buddies with Bill Richardson and will probably vote for him this time around. I just like to listen to him and Willie sing whiskey for my men and beer for the horses when I'm out on the boat with a beer in my hand.

Oh, they are all jerking each other off and singing koombyaa in said picture. But inferring that others are smug too does not change what I was talking about. And if I have to explain what I feel about Franken and why I feel like I do, an explanation will change nothing in your mind. Which is fine cuz we don't need to agree.

MFL: Didn't Toby Keith step up and take on "The Dixie Chicks"? A manly man.

They went after him first. His fan base just dwarfed theirs.

Wow. Two Lies in 11 words. a new record for you.

After The Dixie Chicks made thier infamous but true comments about Bush; "real man" Toby Keith started projecting Photshopped pictures of the Dixie Chicks hugging and kissing Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussien on the big screen behind him during his stage show.

In response Natalie Maines wore a FU TK t-shirt at the next country music awards show, which apparently gave this tough-guy oil man a case of the vapors of something. And by the by as record sales prove the DC's fan base is FAR larger than Toby's

PS: the attacks on the DC were fueled not by some sort of grass-roots outrage but by the DJs of Clear-Channel owned country music stations (who went So far as to organize "spontaneous" anti-DC rallies and ban them from their airwaves). Coincidentally Clear Channel was at the same time lobbying Bush's FCC for a huge rule-change in their favor on radio station ownership restrictions.

They're both douchebags, but O'Reilly could take Franken easy. That's be like Penn vs. Teller, except with a whole lot of douchebaggery.

This "they're all the same, anyways" BULLshiat is way too deep. Maybe we need to call the National Guard to rescue your head from your ass.

Dr. Mojo PhD: feckingDr. Mojo PhD: feckingmorons: I am not a fan of either. However O'Reilly said this year, the article said Franken was there in 2006.
If there were no others besides he and Toby Keith there in 2007 he is correct.

Ummm...

The USO said it has sent seven entertainment tours to Afghanistan in 2007, after 12 tours - including one with O'Reilly nemesis Al Franken - went to the war-torn country in 2006.

Right you are, apparently I was focused on seeing when Mr. Franken was there that I did not pay enough attention to the article.

Thanks for pointing that out.

You my friend are wrong.

The battle of the country stars started back in August 2002 when Maines criticized Keith's single "Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American)." She said of the single, "I hate it. It's ignorant." In turn, Keith was quoted in December 2002 as saying, "She has never written anything that's been a hit." That started the flame war.

A quick Google search reveals that your recollection is indeed more correcter. I think I was conflating the Book Expo spat with a convention at which Franken tackled a heckler.

Side note, it is funny to see certain posters claim that Franken hasn't been famous since the 70s. I invite said posters to list the best-selling books that they themselves have written in the past decade.

Sorry for the confusion, I didn't even consider that Weird Al and Al Franken are both Al's. Its just a coincidence.

The Weird Al clip was to illustrate an exaggerated form of the cut/paste sort of drivel that Michael Moore produces, which Al Franken does not.

Don't get me wrong, he may not be as outright dishonest as Michael Moore, but I still think Al Franken is a douche. Political views aside, I find his entire act/personae to be extremely irritating, not to mention his tendancy to smear those he disagrees with. I'm not saying O'Reilly is douche-free, but listening to his voice is at least more pleasant than fingernails-on-blackboard.

It might be helpful to post, you know, illustrations of Franken being dishonest at all to support your contention.

And it also might be a good idea to find examples of Franken 'smearing' those he disagrees with--preferably 'smears' that are not just Franken illustrating how his disagreement with the individual in question is simply based on said individual lying or otherwise being dishonest.

Would you consider it 'smearing' your child to point out that you disagree with his contention he did not eat the chocolate bar by indicating the chocolate 'smeared' all over his face?

I have seen 'bigger' celebrities at the farkin' grocery store. So I've had an idea:
Everytime some loser celebrity gets a DUI or slugs a photog or buys their coke diet pills from the wrong dealer, instead of sentencing them to 92 minutes in a local jail, the judge should offer them either 4 months of REAL jail time, or the opportunity to do a full USO tour.

Bill O'Reilly makes me think of this gianormous bug I saw one time. It was literally about 6 inches long and 3 inches wide. I wanted to poke it with a stick to see if it was real or something plastic someone left on the sidewalk to be funny. Unfortunately there was no stick so I'll never know. I've never actually listened to BO but after having read the transcript of his report on lesbian gangs I have thought that can not possibly be real no one is slimy enough to get on national TV and say something so blatantly obviously false or be that irresponsible. That incident was just so far outside my world view and foreign to my existence. I can't even be angry at BO anymore. He's just this strange incomprehensible alien life form.
