Horta is the best!!!

The pain .. The pain.

2007-11-20 08:29:51 AM
I like the flying pancakes myself.

I liked the Horta. Better than the endless parade of humans-with-bumpy-foreheads in later Trek series ...

The two-face aliens from "Let that be your last battlefield" were pretty cheesy, but then pretty much all of them are. I can't help but still love the series though.

That list has already been condemned by the Space Pope.

The Trouble with Tribbles had some great lines, though.

"I like them. Better than I like you"

"Laddy, don't you think you should rephrase that?"

it's nice to know you can (presumably) kill tribbles with a hammer :D

Would be interesting to see if they go splat or they go pop

Anyone see the sacreligious "re-imagined" versions with the CG effects and spaceships added in? It's like colorizing Casablanca!

Gave me nightmares when I was a kid. I always wanted to see this remade with better effects. To me it defined Trek. Less "we're here to be your friend" more "we're here to chew your face off cause we feel like it".

In the original series they had PLENTY of alien races which were just human, without even bothering to stick anything on their heads. Oh look, we've traveled further than any other human only to find...more humans.

Well, that's a TNG episode. It doesn't bug me, but I think that the later series at least attempt to add some differences where TOS didn't. The cardassians might just be humans with latex spoons on their foreheads, but they're a whole lot less human than the inhabitants of the gangster planet. Or the Nazi planet. Or the Roman Empire planet.

Kirk kicked the Gorn's ass. Picard would want to have a summit with with it.

Archer took out a Gorn, too (alternate universe Archer) and he didn't have to make a cannon to do it. Plus his Gorn actually moved fast, since it was CGI and not Dude In Rubber Suit.

Of course, Archer used the ship's gravity to help, so he cheatedadapted and overcame, like Kirk.

And Kirk would totally kick Archer's ass.

Nah, they're great. It's not like they added Jar Jar or anything, they just recreated the existing FX and made them look better.

But no matter how good it looks, there are going to be old farts complaining just on general principle.

Actually, I liked that episode. The writing was dodgy, but I thought it was a clever rationalizing of the stupidity of having a universe populated with numerous nigh-identical bipeds that generally have similar levels of technology.

But yes, the new-generation setting (TNG/DS9/Voyager) could've used more non-humanoid aliens. The only recurring non-humanoids I can think of were the Founders (that tended to use a humanoid form) and Species 8472 (that also used a humanoid form to communicate with humans). Obviously, both of those were done for budget reasons, but it was still nice to include them.

Too bad that Species 8472 was in the stupidest episodes in the long history of stupid that populated Voyager.

It's interesting, and maybe a little *gasp* fun to see for a change, I'll give you that. I guess it's hard to just accept it when something that you grew up with changes. Kinda like when I saw Greedo shoot first in special edition(I know it's apples and oranges).

This article made me go check out StarTrek.com (pOp) where I discovered this the contributions of one Mr. Wah Ming Chang. He designed most (if not all) of those creatures, in addition to the tricorder, the phaser, and the bird of prey.

This: The only recurring non-humanoids I can think of were the Founders (that tended to use a humanoid form)

And of course, to bring this full circle, the woman that played the "Ancient Humanoid" seeder-person in that episode that "never happened" apparently (hehe) also played the leader of the The Founders in almost identical makeup, leading to all sorts of idiotic speculation about the origin of The Founders, or in my case the lack of imagination that went into later Trek.

Can't remember the names of the episode in question or the actress' name on account of having a life and lack of motivation to piss about in Wikipedia.

And also the certain knowledge that if I look up Star Trek in Wikipedia I'll be there for hours reading pointless fictional minutiae. The shame, it burns.

spocksbrain: I guess it's hard to just accept it when something that you grew up with changes.

But it's not substantively changing. It's not like they're making Han shoot first or adding a slithering Hutt. It's just a fresh coat of paint.

The actress' name is Salome Jen, and although the makeup is similar, I don't think it's identical. I, for one, never connected the two.

The Mugato gave me nightmares as a kid, which my parents found hilarious. From an adult perspective, now I see why.

Yeah, that actually annoys me less than an endless parade of bumpy forehead aliens; a token effort seems worse than none. Ok, TOS isn't getting credit there for swarthy Klingons or green-skinned Orions either, but... Give me silicon-based burrowing pizzas, flying pancakes, lamprey salt vampires, plush furballs ... rock monsters, lizard-men, antennae, and snouts.

All on the same alien? Christ, man, I don't think anyone could cobble that together into a mental picture that is any less creepy than the one I have now. Thanks.
