Argh. I don't hear the end of this - I live in a big golf resort type area, and everyone's main concern is making sure the grass everywhere is the right shade of green. Even in the horrific drought we're in, they're watering at least three times a week.

Considering golf is probably the most environmentally destructive sport out there, I could care less. It shows such good collective sense to have courses built in drought prone areas. Humans sure is smrt!

"Residents can be helpful by being a set of eyes and if they see anything unusual, such as golf carts driving on greens at night, we ask them to please call the police.

Are they just worried about unauthorized driving on the courses at night? Or are they really worried about unauthorized seeding on the courses at night?

Heh, competetive fire-starting may be beneficial in areas where natural fires have been suppressed for a long time *San Diego/Lake Tahoe* now that I think about it.

Also, being raised in northern Nevada, it has never made any sense when we saw multiple golf courses open the year after we had a major drought in the area. I've never played on a golf course in my life for environmental reasons, but I suppose that means I will never be a successful businessman.

/try desert golf. Pick a shrub in the distance, thwack your day-glo golfball at it, and don't forget the beer.

I have never played a game of golf in my life. Think of a better way to avoid your wife and drink. Marry someone you love and be honest with her about your drinking problem, for instance. That's my plan.

And in Scotland, the grass used to naturally grow that way, cropped to uniformity by the herds that grazed upon it.

I'll start respecting the game when it doesn't require distubring amounts of pesticide and contribute to a growing scarcity of fresh water all in the name of a perfect playing surface.

When I did a stint at a resort we had:
1) people dropping a loaf in the cups
2) screwing on the greens
3) letting their dogs crap on the grass
etc

Lots of people thought it was amusing to leave a steamer in the ball cups. Mr Old Rich White Guy didn't find it too amusing when he'd reach down and see the results of eating too many Grape Nuts. Sex on the course happened a good bit, hell, I did it. Bend the GF over a sand trap and away you go! Dogs seemed to walk miles out of their way to pinch one there too.

You know what's apparently even cooler than golfing? Standing around at work, or in bars, or any given social situation, and talking about golfing. For hours.

I swear to fark, most of the people I deal with professionally seem to think that golf is universal enough for me to be interested in their handicap, their favorite driver and the lengthy process by which they selected it, and the names of the courses they've played.

Hey golfers! Do I drone on and on about smoking pot and internet pornography? Then shut up and go golf!
