Wow. Those people are stupid.

Am I the only one amused that not recognizing a commercial is being used as evidence of the stupidity of others? The video is amusing but really, what I get from it, is that a bunch of advertising copywriters feel a bit superior to the "average joe" who just doesn't understand their "great art."

Most people don't give a damn about the "artistic merits" of tv commercials that are going to be played every five minutes. And most serious artists wouldn't run their ideas by a focus group to hear their thoughts on the concept.

Like it's been mentioned, it's a different world now than it was 23 years ago.

Yeah, it had a MUCH bigger impact during the Cold War.
Conformity -> IBM (Soviet Union)
Blonde -> Apple (USA)

And Apple's position in the marketplace is so different now than it was then that the commercial just doesn't make as much sense.

They aren't trying to convince people to abandon the command line in favor of a GUI. Apple has the dominant mp3 player and Windows is considered to basically be just as user-friendly, so it doesn't really make sense that "Big Brother" is Microsoft.

But the sad truth is that this is how the majority of Americans feel...
2001: A Space Odyssey could have used more space battles. 1984? I think I read that in high school. Isn't it about burning books and time travel? I just don't have time to read. I'll wait for the movie to come out. The Bible could have been better if Jesus lived. Why didn't Shakespeare write in normal English?

Want some help off of that high horse? If you had to choose between watching "Star Wars" (any of them) or "2001: A Space Odyssey" which would you choose? "Indiana Jones" or "Citizen Kane"? "Citizen Kane" may be "better," but 9 times out of 10 I'd prefer to watch Indy.

The Apple commercial appeared nationally on tv exactly 1 time. (I guess it was played in movie theaters for a while and it was mentioned on the tv "news" a lot.) The focus group probably assumed that this commercial would be aired as often as every other commercial. It would get old faster than those damn "Head On" ads.

I guess the fact that no one recognized the old commercial should tell Apple not to go ahead with this. What's the point of being nostalgic about something nobody remembers?
