I was just thinking the same thing. In a generation or two, countries like China, India, SE Asia, et al, are going to just about breed themselves out of existence 'cause they keep making nothing but boys, and then have to import brides to meet demand. The funny thing is that in modern places like Europe and the US, we have no such shortage, which could theoretically help cancel out the gender disparity over there. However, that's assuming that any modern women would want to give up an education and being treated like a real human to go to a backwards-ass country just to be a baby factory. Okay, I'm generalizing, and probably being a xenophobe or something, but the whole thing DOES make you wonder WTF...

When I was in Taiwan teaching English, I encountered many children who had unusual English names (most kids there have both Chinese and English names).

Some parents have a habit of naming their kids after whatever English words sound appealing to them, no matter what the meaning is.

I had kids named Gasoline, Spoons, Thumb, etc. One friend of mine, her sister owned a restaurant, so she named her kids after food. Her three daughters were named Tomato, Pineapple and Papaya.

Tomato is actually a common English name in China.

To be fair, I don't think the name Olympic sounds as awkward in Chinese as it does in English. Names like Angel and Paris sound weird in Chinese as well. But this is fark so carry with the fun-poking.

I'm curious to see what happens when this disparity becomes severe. The opposite happened in Africa after the slave trade: very few men compared to lots of women. The result, a highly-patriarchal society suffering from high rates of adultery, polygamy, rape, and of course social instability.

On an aside, anyone ever play Battletanx for the N64?
