But, I must say... Philosophy studies give me a bit of humor when I survey the fark forums... It's like 40,000 philosophers trying to make points... My only advantage on some is to point out factual errors and minute errors.

Jamietie: its in the US version, just at a lower RPM

BMWs are ok, they are more comfort than performance, they certainly don't "stick like glue" unless you mean elmers glue.. Especially the Z3 its like driving a big cushion.

Tatasm:

It is a proper clutchless manual. Basically, this is a manual gearbox with servos and computerization to make it work as an automatic. The reviews I've read of it pretty much say it shifts better than a person could.

Unlike the porsche semi-automatics, which are just automatics with manual controls, meaning they stil have a torque-converter. Automatics suck.

i've had a 528e for about 4 months now, and I love it. doesn't get the gas mileage of the honda I used to drive, and the steering is very different (an effect of the added weight, i assume), but man it's fun to drive. i've done all the work myself that's been needed so far, including a timing belt that was about 18000 miles overdue. no regrets whatsoever. i just hope that i'm in a position to get another bimmer once this one is ready to be replaced.

Big Al-

Waste of money fake porsche? What do you drive then, a riced-out Civic?

In my opinion the boxster is fun for how much it costs... If you want to spend like 80k then go for it.

Lancer Evo is gonna take an even bigger chunck out of the 3 Series' market. When the Subaru WRX came out, you could see lots of used BMW Z3s and Porche Boxters for sale at the subaru dealers. I haven't picked up a WRX because I've hear horror stories about Subaru's quality. Mitsubishi isn't so bad. Lancer EVO will be schweeeeeet, and much faster and better handling than any M3. It won't however, have the prestige, hence, the extra $15,000 to be considered "Higher class".

When my brother got a 12 on his ACT, Dad went out and spent the college fund on a BMW Z3 for himself.

And he never drives it.

His golf clubs don't fit in the trunk.

I *wish* I was kidding.

I drive a 1988 Toyota Camry station wagon, which I paid $1100 for. Best car EVAH.

I've put 75,000 hard miles on the 86 325es I bought used in '97 for $4000. It's up to 211,000 and doing just fine. Those miles include a few autocrosses too, which are like putting 10,000 miles on your car on an afternoon. It's still going strong, showing no real signs of letting up anytime soon.

The work I do on it is minimal, and it's never all that expensive when I do have things fixed. Unfortunately, a gravel driveway keeps me from doing more work myself, but it's an easy car to work on for what I have done.

Plus, it averages 27mpg, with me driving it hard. There aren't too many other things out there with this performance and that efficency. Needless to say, my next car will be another BMW.

Oh, and Stubblyhead, don't neglect that timing belt- bad things happen when valves meet pistons. You also might have wanted to replace the water pump while you were in there...

"This particular M5 tops out at 470hp and does 0-60 in 4.1. .2 seconds slower than the the new 500hp Viper. Yowza."

The Tango (an electric car) can accelerate through the standing 1/4 mile in 12 seconds at over 120 mph and travel from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds. http://www.commutercars.com/

Sure it may look wierd, but it's a nice proof of concept. Range (80 miles) had to be sacrificed for speed though. But that's a result of batery power. Throw a fuel cell in there and IC engines may well go the way of the dodo within the decade.

I mean, how cool is that?

Awesome car too.

And I remember when a slant, inline 6 was a joke.

2002-10-03 09:33:47 PM
MrCharlie--yeah, interference engines are a pain. that's why i replaced it. ;-) and i did do the water pump as well, the bearing was pretty well shot in it.

AirZonk--mitsubishis are not really very reliable cars, and their resale value is pretty bad too. the galant is the only one that CU thought was worth a shiat. the eclipse looks pretty sexy, but i wouldn't want to own one. the lancer doesn't have enough history in the states to really say one way or another, but i wouldn't bank on them being much better than par for the course.

so has anyone realized this is a repeat?

pft!

I guess that this discovery is cool, but I don't really know for sure since I don't have any farking idea what it means.

I know shiat about cars, that is why I drive a Saturn. Push the gas, make it go: that's all I need.

I bet some of you think I'm joking. Only a little :P

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right BA Start works too I hear.

The real hassle with BMWs is that special bottled German air you have to put in the tires, without that air, the cars just break down all the time.

i don't mean to be a threadjacker, but since this thread is bringing out the car nuts, i've got a question for y'all:

eventually (a few months, i hope), i'll be buying a new car. my current car is a 1993 cavalier z24 model. it's a delightful car but it's falling apart and it has almost 130,000 miles on it.

so, the question is, what car should i get? keep in mind i'm a chick and i like driving fast, but i'm a geologist and will likely have to do significant work off road. i've been thinking about one of those nifty subaru WRX imprezas.

and to keep this mildly on-topic: my sister has a civic and an older beemer. she loved her civic but man, oh man, does she love her beemer. can't remember the model but it's AWD. 325ix, maybe?

My dad had an M5 for a while; thing carried a hefty pricetag, but my god, driving that car bordered on an erotic experience. The interior was immaculate, the car handled suprisingly well for as large as it was, and it had some real balls... engine sounded great, too.

My uncle, on the other hand, had a 3-series convertible a couple years ago. It was a fun car, but it seemed like that thing spent more time in the shop than it did on the road.

Personally, I'm still 21 and so BMWs are a bit out of my price range, but I have a '98 Prelude (no, it's not riced-out, the only aftermaket work I've had done was to have a Blaupunkt sound system installed, which is NOT one of those ghetto, bass-laden, acoustic nightmare POS sound systems the ricers have), and I couldn't be happier with my car. It performs very well, looks nice enough that I can drive it to formal events and not feel too out-of-place, has a great-sounding engine, and is *extremely* reliable... plus I really like the way the shifter glides. It's not a very expensive car, either.

Honda makes phenomenal cars, and in terms of quality vs. price, I just don't think there's a better car out there (although I hear Toyotas are very well-made, too).

Wow... all that for that rich son of a biatch who doesn't even know what a clutch is and just wants to play racer!

2002-10-03 09:44:29 PM
I've driven an M5 on several occassions, and I must say it is one sweet ride. Got some very nice power both off the line as well as highway acceleration. Not to mention a top quality luxury interior.

Oh, and chicks dig the M5 on a date.

On a side note, I found this particular comment, found in the forum on the link, rather entertaining...

So *that's* why mine wasn't working correctly.. I was doing the old Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A B A [Start] thing. I kept getting unlimited ammo instead of the 4k rpm drop.

2002-10-03 09:44:39 PM
Misspudding,

I'd recommend you look into the Audi A4 Quatro - they're pretty similar to the WRX, actually, but I've mixed reviews as for Subaru's quality, while VW/Audi are some of the best-made cars on the planet.

...I think the Quatro's a bit better-looking, too. ;)

2002-10-03 09:44:39 PM
THis is it.

2002-10-03 09:44:49 PM
What I want to see is an easter egg that when you put your foot on the gas, lower the left real passenger window and turn up the volume on the CD, it then drops your transmission. Drops it right out of the car and onto the road. These automitive chip designers need to have a little more fun!

2002-10-03 09:45:28 PM
0-60 in less than 3 seconds...ZOOOMMMM

2002-10-03 09:46:00 PM
I don't have a car myself, but if I were to get one it'd be a hard decision between a Mini and an A4 (quattro).

This being said, it's also true that BMW drivers REALLY love their cars... I know a few.

2002-10-03 09:46:28 PM
I saw the Tango in Amsterdam a couple of months ago. They rate with the Pacer and Gremlin as far as looks are concerned. Something like you would see in a circus with clowns coming out of them. Rather shocked to see a performance claim of 0-60 under 4 secs.

2002-10-03 09:47:41 PM
Exk0 -- that looks like a Viper with some body work done... but really, is that a Viper-based mod?

But can they go 240 mph?

You don't have one of those.

The company is not allowed to sell them to anyone sporting a mullet.

Myrmidon, funny you should mention the Audi. i was going to say, "the subaru WRX or an Audi A4 Quattro..." but then i realized that i'll probably be unable to afford one. but yes, damn those are nice little cars. just about drooled on myself when i saw it at the auto show in detroit.

Thanks for farking the thread dipshiat.

2002-10-03 09:53:11 PM
lol... Deloreans...

The Cerbera's one badass-looking car... not that I like it over the DB7 or the Esprit, but that's a damned fine car.
