BMWs are overpriced Hondas.

How so Impaler? I could see overpriced VWs, but Hondas??

Oh, yes, the article is in there (about the 7th down), and yes, the headline is pretty much the article.
2002-10-03 03:37:19 PM
Some one told me something to that effect the other day, I believed him.

begin quote:"BMW is where it's at.

*snicker* Yes, paying all that extra for a car that's built worse than a Honda and is way more expensive to fix is certainly where it's at. No need to go into the suspension or the head-cracking problems on certain models.

Excluding the Z8. Even the X5 is a piece of crap.
"end quote

Huh, and what does your friend drive?

Not flaming you, but I still don't know how that makes BMWs overpriced Hondas. He just made a comparison to Hondas being built better.

Beemers are a bit out of my league, but I've heard they are fun to drive. Especially on country roads.
2002-10-03 04:51:02 PM
I was just bored and trolling.
2002-10-03 04:54:05 PM
Having owned both a 325 is and a civic, I can only assume that the Impaler is throwing out a little flame troll for the board.

I loved my honda- it was hassle free transportation. But it was nowhere near the car that the 325is was.

Honda wins relaibility hands down. The 325 is faster, quicker, corners better, drives better at high speed, has a beautiful engine noise while driving, has a nicer interior.

Consumer reports loves hondas. Car and driver loves BMW's.
2002-10-03 05:26:00 PM
Consumer reports loves BMWs too.
2002-10-03 05:58:34 PM
BMW should just give me one of these cars. I'll find some things wrong with it. Or at least have fun trying to.

Rednecks everywhere rejoice. Correction: High-paid rednecks rejoice. Watch them taars squeal, ya'll.

I have to disagree Eat More Possum. I have an M3, M5, Boxter, 911 turbo, f-15, and a diablo. I think the Bimmers hold their own pretty well.

drives a bmw and loves it..
2002-10-03 08:32:06 PM
Um, where on the link does it mention this 'easter egg'?
2002-10-03 08:33:16 PM
Really how many cases of Hamms can you fit in a BMW?
2002-10-03 08:34:36 PM
you have too many cars Impaler
2002-10-03 08:35:20 PM
I'm there.

Downstairs: Nice pic. I 'm still laughing.
2002-10-03 08:39:11 PM
You must sell heroin to have all those cars.

Not really, of course. If you have an extra, I''ll take it off your hands ;)

A roommate of mine used to work as a mechanic in Scottsdale, AZ at a real big import/European repair shop. It was the kind of place where they send a flatbed out to your house/work to pick up your car, even for stuff like PM and oil changes and whatever. They had Ferraris and Bentleys and such come in all the time. But their bread and butter was working on BMWs and Mercedes of various types (they'd never touch Asian cars). Scottsdale has a lot of both. It's the center of the world for the half-rich.

ANyway, I was waiting there for my friend to get done with work one day and so I would up talking to the manager. I happened to ask him what he drove, and he said a Mercedes (500 something, I think). I asked him why he didn't have one of those slick-looking BMWs. He laughed and said "We make the new guys or whichever mechanic who comes in hungover work on beemers... I wouldn't own one of those POSes if you paid me for it. The only car built worse than a beemer is a Jag. Or maybe a Rolls..."

I thought that was pretty interesting. BTW, not a single one of the mechanics who worked there drove a BMW either.
2002-10-03 08:52:32 PM
I didn't understand that.
2002-10-03 08:52:59 PM
buh? Impaler... Those are all pretty nice... Why not explain HOW IN THE WORLD?!? Are you a wealthy land-owner operating a high-risk smuggling operation in Cuba?

For the record... Your local Georgian-born, Soviet Maniac drives a Toyota MR-2 Spyder. The poor man's Boxter... Not as much HPower but less weight by about 700 lbs.

you guys..look at Impalers about it...80's hair and all those cars...he is part of Miami Vice: THe Northern Years
2002-10-03 08:55:34 PM
I always thought egging cars was a bad idea. You know, the whole, "ruining the paint job" thingie.
2002-10-03 08:55:52 PM
Eat More Possum:

when you say "i drive a boxter" you can pretty much be ruled out of any car conversation. if you know anything about cars, you wouldnt buy that waste of money fake porsche.

2002-10-03 08:57:14 PM
I am truly impressed, Impaler.

First you admit to trolling, now you have people believing you own a military jet. My hat goes off to you, sir.

Good job posting from Slashdot, whoever you are. That article sucked and was halfway down the page for me. Find a decent article that you find on your own next time.

Anyway, this isn't "the first automotive Easter Egg." Go read the Slashdot entry a few days ago and you'll find tons of references to "personal" and industry-wide automotive Easter Eggs that predate this one. Plus, it'll contain all of the formality and technical disucssion that this topic is afforded but will not receive on Fark.

I don't hate Fark, I'm just pissed off that people are ripping off Slashdot, a place that this really deserves to be, and that this stuff is actually getting through.

Plus, it's really old news. I read something similar over the summer (like in June) in an issue of an automotive magazine that was already a few months old.

BMWs are great.

The article says that the new M3 basically allows you to rev the engine before putting it in gear.

One is only allowed to do so once per hour and like 30 times on a particular clutch. It's too much wear and tear to be safe otherwise.
2002-10-03 08:57:30 PM
sequential does anyone know if this is a 'proper' semi automatic (a la F355f1) or the rather crappy porsche semi-automatic...either way i'm not too keen on (though haven't tried the fezza's box)..jesus i don't need to 'simulate' a 4000rpm clutch-drop..i just bloody well do it!
2002-10-03 08:58:12 PM
Oh, yeah. It's not an Easter Egg, per se. Just go to the M3 section of their website and find the driving features section. It tells you right there. It's the first feature listed.
2002-10-03 08:58:21 PM
This isn't even a real easter egg. It's in the owner's manual. Easter eggs are supposed to be hidden surprises.

My car has an easter egg too. When I manipulate certain controls on the dash in a certain way, music plays inside the car.
2002-10-03 08:58:39 PM
Impaler- As you have listed assets worthy of being an independent nation and you are owning a jet... You will be annexed by the new soviet state... Thank you.

My sister's boyfriend once hit a deer with his car but the thing wasn't even dead. The cops had to come shoot it.

I've owned a BMW before, and driven several. BMWs are exactly what they are marketted as, "the ultimate driving machine". They're a joy to drive, they hang on like glue, and even my 1.8 liter 320 went fast if you treated the clutch like a red headed stepchild.

But they're an absolute nightmare to work on. Flaky electrical systems, engine compartments apparently designed by M.C. Escher, parts costs that make you ill.

I would buy another BMW if I were ever so insanely rich that I wouldn't mind paying someone else to keep it in shape. For now, I drive a toyata pickup. I've had it a couple years, and haven't even had cause to buy a service manual.

But man, that 320 I had was still so sweet to drive, even after two accidents and so many miles that it barely passed smog before I sold it. I may get myself a Mini even though it will be a biatch maintenance-wise.

As a member of a car club dedicated to a certain premium German auto manufacturer (not BMW), I will say this:

BMWs are great cars. However, they've lost their edge lately. They're becoming a bit more like Mercedes--that is, softer. The evidence of that came when they softened the steering on the E46, and then had to correct it due to enthusiast rioting.

One good thing though -- there's a horsepower war in Germany (you could include Infiniti here too,) and it even includes Volkswagen. It's happening in every category of German automobile. And the consumer only stands to benefit, as he/she gets more horsepower for their dollar.
2002-10-03 09:03:34 PM

Heh, well, actually, it's worse. The Mini is built in at a BMW UK plant, formerly owned by Rover. ;)

Hey are the philosophy and religion studies coming...any answers..or just more questions and blind faith?
2002-10-03 09:04:02 PM
That's the coolest thing I've ever read. Too bad it will probably void the warantee in the USA.
2002-10-03 09:04:30 PM
My F-22 whups Impaler's F-15.
2002-10-03 09:04:49 PM
Nice digs Impaler.
2002-10-03 09:05:24 PM

I laughed so hard I actually had tears in my eyes. That is farking excellent!
2002-10-03 09:05:31 PM
Actually, that function only works on the Euro version of the M3 SMG. It was disabled because of our famously litigious climate in the U.S...

This particular M5 tops out at 470hp and does 0-60 in 4.1. .2 seconds slower than the the new 500hp Viper. Yowza.
2002-10-03 09:06:20 PM
If you do it too many times, it WILL void your warantee, if I recall the /. discussion correctly.
2002-10-03 09:06:57 PM
Warantee. WTF? Warranty . . .
2002-10-03 09:10:54 PM
and now for the wrench in this posting board....MINI Cooper?

Religion and Philosophy studies are going well... all except for the Greek... Cursed Greek... It is the spawn of all that is dark and chaotic.
