Haw. The highway has left turns only.

That's cruel, funny, but cruel.
2002-10-03 08:21:21 AM
In other news, the Autobahn is now the Schumacherbahn.
2002-10-03 08:21:22 AM
how is it that some retard gets a highway named after him (of at least renamed for him) just for getting in a godddam CAR ACCIDENT?
2002-10-03 08:21:49 AM
I hate to say it, but I almost can't wait for someone to die on that road now, just to watch the newcasters talk about how ironic it is.

Not that I want to see people die in car crashes or anything.

:::how is it that some retard gets a highway named after him (of at least renamed for him) just for getting in a godddam CAR ACCIDENT?:::

Geesh, you just showed your intelligence level. Don't you have class or something you should be in?
2002-10-03 08:23:33 AM
How awesome is it that they're honoring one of the greatest athletes ever with a highway!! I can't wait to get down to Carolina and do me some speedin' on the big road! Hope I don't kill myself like Daley-poo..
2002-10-03 08:28:10 AM
athlete? the man sat in a car. that's not athletics.
2002-10-03 08:31:30 AM
I'm thinking you missed the sarcasm in Blarp's post, Shizuka. At least I'm hoping.
2002-10-03 08:32:06 AM
my bad :p
2002-10-03 08:32:08 AM
While I'm not looking to start a flame war, and I realize that most car drivers are extremely fit, and extremely skilled, I still have a problem calling someone who guides/drives/controls something that isn't under his own power (a bicycle is powered by your legs, a v8 no) an athlete, after all, no one calls jockeys athletes.

As for north carolina, I am SOOOO glad I don't live in that backwards state anymore.
2002-10-03 08:36:10 AM
Farking crap, there is nothing I love more than living in NC. The best part is the little stuff like this, the constant reminder that I am surrounded my morons, backwoods rednecks, and white trash. Yeah, we can honor some pathetic asshat who was able to drive his car around in an oval, but we can't get a lottery to help the school's budgets. That's it. I'm running for Governor next time around. I'm bringing about some CHANGES!
2002-10-03 08:36:28 AM
"Welcome to North Carolina" incest and Nascar is always welcome!
2002-10-03 08:39:32 AM
God I love this state.

*stabs self repeatedly in forehead*
2002-10-03 08:40:32 AM
At least its not here in Florida, I was bettin that Daytona would have done that first
2002-10-03 08:46:04 AM
Simpman He's right.

If it was for his achievements, why didn't it happen while he was alive?
2002-10-03 08:46:42 AM
The article seemed to imply that this was included in another bill. Anyone know what that bill was for?
2002-10-03 08:49:05 AM

I feel significantly stupider for seeing that.

What one has to do with the other is... mind boggling.

What do Pink Floyd and Dale Earnhardt have in common?

A HUGE hit with the wall.....

OK, that wasn't called for......
2002-10-03 08:52:19 AM
I don't think it is actually a bad thing that politicians spend their time on things like naming highways and state rocks. It reduces the amount of damage they would do if they spent all their time on real issues.
2002-10-03 08:55:25 AM
My thought is that athlete is not the correct term to use. Definatly profesinal but not really athletic. And the reason for naming the road after death is the same reason so many people get recognision after death.
2002-10-03 08:58:26 AM
They should also change all the mile markers to "3".
2002-10-03 09:02:21 AM
Figured they renamed the road to N.C. 499 1/2.
2002-10-03 09:03:36 AM
The poster was right on. i could care less about highway changes, approve the freakin budget already!
2002-10-03 09:08:27 AM
I find it very odd that the same guy who just yesterday was discussing, in detail, his lust for Barbra Streisand is making value judgements about North Carolina (LarryD).
2002-10-03 09:10:52 AM
Anybody claiming that Nascar drivers aren't athletes ever spent any time in a stock car, during a race? Ever seen the drivers get out of the car after the race? Covered in sweat, every one of them. SO either A) All Nascar drivers are overweight and out of shape or B) race car driving involves some degree of athleticism.

Speed Racer was an athlete.

[image from too old to be available]

Will Lil' Dale get a road named after him, too?
2002-10-03 09:12:12 AM
Except they've already passed a budget.
2002-10-03 09:16:32 AM
Chrash --

You forgot C) it gets really hot in there.

Not arguing that racers aren't athletes -- I don't know enough about the sport to judge -- but I'm guessing heat has more to do with the sweat than anything else.
2002-10-03 09:19:32 AM
Paranoidandroid point taken.
2002-10-03 09:20:55 AM
That's what I love about this state. We always have our prioities straight.

2002-10-03 09:22:41 AM
Hi, WickedWanda. Is Octoberfest going on in Hickory this weekend?
2002-10-03 09:22:45 AM
Actually Chrash,
I'd say what's involved is fitness, athleticism is different, fighter pilots have to have the same level of fitness (if not more), ability to resist high Gs, etc... but don't claim to be athletes.
2002-10-03 09:23:13 AM
Typical NC. Name a bullshiat road (and spend more money on it) after a NASCAR driver (no offense here. The guy was great, but PRIORITIES PEOPLE!!!!), but can't find it in their hearts to pay teachers better.
2002-10-03 09:26:05 AM

Could that be because dog fighting (at least during war time) isn't considered sport?

But I do agree with others, NC guv'ment is a joke with a bad punchline.
2002-10-03 09:29:11 AM
DSM-292.11: That's a photoshopper I would not like to meet. I'm with Nicoffeine. I now feel significantly more dumb.
2002-10-03 09:32:11 AM

Possibly so, but as I said earlier, I have a hard time giving the label "athlete" to a person who is guiding/steering/driving something that isn't entirely powered by their body. That's why I consider bicyclists athletes, but drivers no. On the other hand, I have extreme respect for their skill, reflexes, and abilities, especially moto GP riders. Pushing something with 2 wheels with very small contact patches on a machine with almost 1/1 hp to weight ratio to it's limits, damn..
2002-10-03 09:36:15 AM
I was surprised to learn that the legislature isn't a full time job.
2002-10-03 09:37:10 AM
/off topic

Speaking of NC, I'm taking suggestions for planning a Charlotte Fark party for Spring 2003. Email me for details and/or if interested.

/back to topic about NASCAR drivers not being athletes
2002-10-03 09:37:43 AM
Just Farking great! I can see it now.....We'll just draw arrows on the maps showing "It was Highway 136, now its Highway 3" - your going the wrong way or is the right way. Isn't that statue in K-town enough for nascar :(
2002-10-03 09:45:49 AM
Rpm: They won't name things after living people, in case they somehow disgrace themselves. (Naming after corporations that will disgrace themselves is still OK.)

I am surprised anyway -- naming any road after someone who speeds for a living is kind of weird.

As for the NC government: I've lived in a lot of states, and I have to say that the state government of NC is the worst I have ever seen in terms of uncontrolled spending and taxation, runaway corruption, and flagrant disregard for the law. (And I've lived in Massachusetts AND California)
2002-10-03 09:58:35 AM
Maybe they could make a "Jeff Gordon" rest stop.
2002-10-03 10:00:54 AM
Leachreas - Unfortunately, they DO name things after living people sometimes. A stretch of 285 here in Atlanta is the Billy McKinney Freeway (Billy McKinney being the father of Cynthia McKinney, recently ousted, racist US Representative from Georgia). After her defeat in the primaries, Billy went on record that it was the Jews fault that his daughter got spanked. Al Sharpton could take lessons on racist scapegoating from this guy.

Even though I'm not planning on living here forever, I sincerely hope that the state wakes up and takes this highway away from him.
2002-10-03 10:01:15 AM
I think (hope) it was done as a joke. It was submitted as the inspiration for this pshop thread. I laughed in self-defense the first time I saw it.
2002-10-03 10:01:58 AM
Regarding your comment about NC government, NC and GA share more than just a border.
2002-10-03 10:04:01 AM
Leachreas: yeah. And those morons in the legislature HAVE to come to downtown raleigh to work. I swear, it's like having a special ed class wandering through my neighborhood on a 8 month long field trip.
2002-10-03 10:15:34 AM
Wonder how many other roads in NC are named for on the job accidents?
2002-10-03 10:22:21 AM
My sister is a Georgia "transplant" having moved there from CT 12 years ago. If it wasn't for her daughters and grandchildren living there, she would come back to Connecticut and live in what she calls a "civilized" state.
