Closest I ever came to seeing a ghost. So my wife and I moved into our current house about six months ago. The guy we bought it from had lived there since the sixties but his wife had died about 20 years ago. So we are in the process of moving in and I am a big believer in getting your bedroom furniture moved in first and then getting your bed made ect. So we did all that and I went out to the UHaul to bring more crap in and I was bringing something back into the master bedroom and as soon as I walked in the master bedroom door I happened to look to my left to my wife's nightside table and the lamp slid about four inches. I just stood there and stared and I got chills up my spine. I hollered out my wifes name only to hear her say "I am right here". She was under the bed on the far side of the room and she was plugging the lamp into an extension cord and she had pulled it to get some slack.

Okay, I'll bite. Not really a "ghost" story, but I posted this to a ghost stories newsgroup a very long time ago:

When I was about ten years old, I slept in a "Captain's Bed". It was a bit taller than the usual bed with room for a couple of shelves and a few drawers underneath it. I was prone to tossing and turning when I slept so there would be many a night that I would roll out of bed and be woken up by the meter and a half drop to the floor.

Now I don't know if this was a nightmare or not, but one night I awoke to find myself on the floor, tangled up in my blanket. As I turned my head, I found myself staring into a black featurless face with the exception of two glowing, red eyes. I screamed and the "thing" scampered away, moving quickly out the door of my room and down the hall. Terrified, I attempted to get back into my bed but something was preventing me from doing so. It seemed like there was an invisible wall between me and my bed. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness and I began to compose myself, I realized that I had actually not fallen out of bed at all and that the "wall" was simply the wall of my room that the bed was up against.

Now, I don't know if I dreamt the whole thing or not but several things I do know:

1. If I did dream the whole thing, then I awoke to find myself standing in bed and sleepclawing at my bedroom wall. This is the only time anything like this has ever happened to me.

2. It did feel as though I had fallen out of bed - something literally jarred me so that I felt I was awake.

3. This experience, even if it was a dream, scared me enough to burn itself into my memory for twenty-three years.

Just my little experience.

I don't really believe in ghosts per se, but I believe there are preternatural forces as yet unexplained by science. That said, here's my unspooky ghost story:

My wife and I were sitting at the kitchen table, discussing religion, no one else was in the house. During the course of our conversation, we both noticed that the kitchen faucet was running. It had not been running prior to our conversation, and neither of us had noticed it being turned on, but both of us noticed that somehow it was on for no apparent reason. I got up and turned it off. To this day neither of us can explain this. THE END.

Oh all right (seeing as an earlier thread didn't go green):

We have a summer place *cough* cottage -all right then- trailer in a park with a small lake in the middle. Years ago when my kids were small, we bought a paddle boat and went for a ride across the water. Every time we passed the middle of the lake, my then 3 year old daughter would point to the water saying she could see a boy down there looking at her. We simple thought this was the over-active imagination of a small child.
A few years later, I was talking to one of the park owners and she revealed to me that they used to have a diving dock in the middle of the lake but took it away when a boy struck his head and drowned - right at the spot my daughter saw her `friend'. She's 13 now and avoids that part of the water like the plague.

I am not sure why, but there is some sort of evil presence that torments the women of my mother's family. My Great-Grandmother died in an insane hospital as a result. As a young child, my mother and my aunt, started being tormented by this evil presence at night after my great-aunt and some others tried practicing black magic in the house. At first, this evil prescence would only just push my mother around. When my mother told her mother about it, her mother did not believe. In a matter of weeks the attacks became more violent, and the evil presences started physically hitting my mother all over her body. It was only after my grandmother saw the bruises from these attacks that she believed.

My grandmother was Catholic and really did not know what to do, so she took my mother to see the nuns for guidance who taught my mother the Lord's Prayer. The nuns told my mother to recite the Lord's Prayer every night before going to bed. The physical attacks stopped after she started reciting the Lord's Prayer each night, but the evil presence would still come around.

There are other people in the family who are also subjected to these attacks, such as my aunt and sister, but they rarely talk to me about them.

The house that my mother, aunt and grandmother lived in had been in the family since the mid-1600's. My great-grandfather always said that the house was haunted, and after my grandfather died, they decided to sell the house because of this "curse". As a bonus, the house was located in Evreux, France, which anyone who knows the origination of the word Goblin, knows it was the name of an evil spirit in Evreux.

I went college in Valdosta GA, there were rumors of a haunted church out in the cotton fields. So some friends and I went out looking at about 3 am. We found it and when we pulled up we heard organ music. We were sober and we all heard it. To this day I have no explanation for what we heard.

Now the old abandoned Church that supposedly had bleeding walls was a fraud.

Well, my sister will back me up on this even if no one else will. When we were little, we lived out in the country in Virginia near the NC border. My room was at the end of the hallway on the corner of the house. At this time I was about 7 and my sister was about 4 or 5.

I would always keep the window down in my room because it got unnaturally cold if it was open (even during the spring/summer) One night I woke up to find my window open, so I got up to close it and I saw something pull its little black hand off the ledge and go scurrying out into the yard and up the tree that faced my window.

I slammed the window shut and locked it and started screaming for my sister (whose room was right next door and whose window faced the front of the house as well. She ran into my room and looked at me with big eyes and said, "Did you see them?" I asked her what she saw and she said she saw something with red eyes running away from my window on two legs and climb up the tree. She said there were more in the tree. She said she's seen them before.

After that, they never tried to open my window again, but I would see them from time to time until my family outgrew the house and we moved away when I was 10.

okay I'll bite........I live a few thousand miles from my family. Since I have been estranged from them for oh 7 or 8 years (long story) needless to say I knew or know nothing about their situation. One fine summer afternoon I start smelling cigarette smoke on and around me. I do not smoke tobacco and live by myself so it is pretty noticeable....This goes on for a few days.....I jump in my car on day and happen to notice an extremely strong odor of cigarettes and it is driving me wild...then I look to the passenger seat and lo and behold is a figure just like my mom.......I knew she was dead then........hmmm go figure ....a few months later I get a fattie in the mail from a will. Not scary but for the longest time I wanted to start smoking cigarettes like crazy and I mean really wanted to.......

My friend and I had a seance once. We were screwing around, only half serious and taunting evil spirits to dare come prove their existence, not really expecting anything to happen. We had one of those candle holders with the wax catch basin around the holder, the kind with the little finger-loop hole so you can carry it around while walking around. Anyways, the wax had dripped down and melted into the basin. The candle was about halfway burned (it was your standard stick candle, about 8-10 inches high.)

We were laughing, joking around that the spirits were chicken and couldn't do anything to prove to us they were there, and suddenly the candle holder got very, very hot. I could feel it from about a foot away, this heat. So I touched the candle holder, and it burned. Bad. I threw a match into the wax... and I shiat you not, that match DISSOLVED in SECONDS. My friend and I looked at each other with that "oh shiat" look. The candle holder was on the floor. Being a candle holder, I thought the candle holder was safe enough. Wrong. We tried to pick it up and it was so hot that we couldn't even touch it. I blew out the candle, grabbed a towel to pick it up, and as I lifted it, the carpet beneath had MELTED. If I were at my dads house right now I could take a picture and show you the hole in my floor. I ran with the candle holder to the bathroom, which was already burning through the towel, threw it in the sink and turned the water on, and wax spit EVERYWHERE because of how hot it was.

It was outright freaky.

I don't believe in the supernatural (or preternatural if you read too much chick lit) since, if it exists, then it is in nature, and is thus: just plain natural.

Acting II class at Vanderbilt's Neely Auditorium in '05. There was a scene going on while the rest of the class watched. We heard (as is often) footsteps of what we thought was some rude individual going across the catwalk, but when the class looked up there was nothing there. The footsteps continued to the door and then fell silent. Neither of the doors opened or closed the entire time. I'm willing to bet all theatres are haunted.

Of course, I don't believe in ghosts.

It started about six nights ago at 6pm, when I watched a video with all kinds of weird imagery on it. After it ended my cellphone rang. When I answered it, some stupid child on the other end said "Seven days." I screamed at her "Stop messing with your mother's phone!!!" and hung up on her. I have no idea what's supposed to happen in seven days.

- 90% of ghost stories...

2007-10-31 12:45:14 PM
Three mini-stories:

-I traveled to New York City back in March. During my last day of the trip, I went to the New York Public Library to do some genealogical research. When I was looking up information on one of the computers on the 2nd floor (I think it was the 2nd) with respect to my mom's side, I was pushed from behind. I was sitting, no one was behind, nor did anyone walk behind me when this happened.

-Moved to the house I currently live at when I was 10 years old. One of the first nights I lived here, I woke up in the middle of the night, and thought I saw blood dripping from the walls of my bedroom. Went to my parents' bedroom and told them about it. Went back to bed in my room and the alleged blood was gone.

-When I was 12, my grandmother was at the hospital for pneumonia and went into a coma. She passed away about 12 hours later. However, before she died, a young male nurse named Brian made sure my family was comfortable and made sure my grandmother was not in pain during her final hours of life. Grandmother passed away. An hour or two later, my mother and her sisters went to look for this male nurse Brian who so kindly helped our family and my grandmother. They asked the nursing staff where he was...and they were told the hospital does not employ anyone of that description or name.

It was about 15 years ago while on a cross country trek. I was just outside of Amarillo, TX closing in on the New Mexico border. It was this time of year, so all over the radio were these call in and tell your ghost story bits.

This one in particular was a local favorite that I had heard in the Diner I ate at in Amarillo as well on the radio. It was about a girl murdered by her prom date in a motel room just west of Amarillo. The story was went like this. People who stayed in that motel were always seeing weird things, or being "woken up by a young girl." This girl would be gone as soon as they were truly awake, so they would tell themselves it was a creepy dream. BUT whenever they told anyone of the creepy dream and described the young girl that woke them, they always described the same girl, right down to the peach colored prom dress. Freaky.

So now its about 3:00AM and I am woken up by a young woman standing over my bed in my motel room just outside of Amarillo, TX. I say out loud, "are you the girl from the prom?"

She said, "No you idiot I'm the hooker you picked up in Oklahoma City, you gunna pay me and take me home or do I gotta call Big Jim."

I once saw/heard a barking dog on a porch across the street one night, and after about a minute the dog trotted to the far end of the porch and disappeared into a shadow. I thought nothing of it until the next day when I realized/remembered that that end of the porch was blocked by the brick wall of the building next to it. So where the hell did the dog go?? The shadow wasn't big enough to completely hide the whole animal.

2007-10-31 12:47:16 PM
I was in a play at a local college and after practice one night I went downstairs to let a woman in the ceramics department know that we were all clearing out and she would be alone in the Arts building. After I got out of the elevator and started walking to the back of the labyrinth like basement I felt like I was going to bump into someone every time I turned a corner. It never happened and when I reached the woman and told her what I felt she said the building was thought to be haunted so she was glad to leave with me rather than be left alone in that admittedly strange building.

/Still not sure about this "ghost" thing.
//Still kind of creepy though...

2007-10-31 12:47:18 PM
My first girlfriend thought her place was haunted ever since she was a little girl.

She and her family have lived in a trailer that used to be a drug house. The police raided it and arrested everyone, but my first g/f told me that in the raid they shot and killed a few people, including a little girl who was the daughter of the druggies who lived there. They now haunt the trailer, apparently. She and her older sister have heard and seen these ghosts at night several times ever since they were kids. I always thought it was cute how seriously they took it when I just brushed it aside so easily.

In hindsight, considering all the other crazy sh*t she pulled in our relationship, that should've been a big clue to abandon ship early.
