ok, help me out. why not a big x?

MMMMW was a classic. It had virtually everyone in it except for Bob Hope.

This, like most of Hollywood's recent efforts, will suck.

Bury it under the "W"

X = No!

Perhaps best: A Big "WTF?"

Yeah, great old movie. When the cranky wife slips on the banana at the end, you knew she had it coming. Besides they already kinda remade this with the Seth Green/Cuba Gooding thing.

/Puth the money in th bagth.

They'll do THIS scene:

but I'll bet you won't see THIS in the remake:

i like the idea of a sequel MUCH better than that of a remake.

it'll been, what, 45 years?

subby: i don't get you're "y." because it was the next "sometimes vowel?"

OlafTheBent: I didn't know until recently that it was Spencer Tracy's last movie

That would come as a big surprise to Katharine Hepburn, considering he was in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner four years later.

I always thought it should have been done as a musical, with Busby Berkley type production numbers, and maybe ice skating and high diving.

I think Olaf meant Tracy's last movie while he was still alive.

They already did a (poor) sequel back in 2001: Rat Race

2007-10-30 02:56:39 PM
I love how TFA links to this really classy looking website with all these like "palm" awards and shiat showing everyone how elegant and artsy they are and then there's the sequel to It's a Mad....whatever.

When does the re-imagining of Cannonball Run debut at Cannes?

Diogenes: They already did a (poor) sequel back in 2001: Rat Race

That wasn't a sequel. It was a sh*tty remake.

There's a difference.

The sequel will suck, but it will supposedly wrap up all the plot points. I want to know what happened to all those thousands of people who got free money on the street. And what happens after the banana peel incident? A lawsuit!

Think of the hilarity!

david eick will soon have some free time to work on the 2 hour pilot. soon as he's done effing lindsay wagner's dead corpse, he can get started on dom deluise.

I've said this 100 times on Fark but I'll say it again:

All these do-good celebrities that do publicity stunt charity work should do this:

A remake of this movie. All the A-List actors. Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Robert Deniro, Julia Roberts, etc etc.
Only big names. No B actors.

Get big name directors to work on it. Martin Scorsese, Speilberg, Tarantino, etc.

Give every red cent it makes to charity. Every penny.

Each actor would only have to do probably a week's worth of work since they're all broken into their own segments (if you've seen the original).

It would make THEM look good.
It would make Hollywood look good.

And we the public would get a big "old" Hollywood, FUN, movie, that should presumably be done really well.

It's win-win

/it'll never happen and we'll get Rat-Race Two starring Brain Doyle Murray and Chris Farley's brother.

2007-10-30 04:22:43 PM
I will probably get lynched for saying this, but I thought the original film was a steaming pile of rancid squirrel testes. It was lame, uninspired and far too much of a showcase for a bunch of "established funny people" whose careers were already on the bullet train to obscurity.

...which of course means that a sequel will probably blast records at the box office, not to mention giving me an intense migraine.

Phil Silvers was so damn overrated! He was about as funny as toe mold.

2007-10-30 05:01:13 PM
The original is one of the top movies of all time. The remake will suck, but not as bad as the remake of "Day The Earth Stood Still" featuring that piece of wood Keanu Reeves.

2007-10-30 07:00:50 PM
The movie itself isn't that great from a story standpoint or anything resembling a "plot" - it's the collection of people in it. Jim Bacus as the drunk pilot alone is worth the price of admission. Not to mention Terry-thomas, Phil Silvers, Milton Berle, Johnathan Winters, etc etc etc

Am I the only person here who enjoyed Rat Race?

2007-10-30 07:08:08 PM
Why this will suck:

Potential 'comedians' to tap for this film-

Dane Cook
Chris Tucker
Rob Schneider
David Spade
Adam Sandler
Debra Wilson

Cedric the Entertainer
Jimmy Fallon
Cheri Oteri
That superobese Mexican guy from Comedy Central
Tom Arnold
Jim Bruer

I can't go on, there are tears in my eyes.

2007-10-30 07:25:56 PM
I wrote a script today about two writers who try to create an original script and present it to the bigwigs but end up getting passed over while their archrival gets away with remaking Dr. Strangelove for modern day audiences starring Larry the Cable Guy and Adam Sandler. The bigwigs don't even read the script, they just look at one piece of the script and refuse to go with it.

...then my teacher did the exact same thing to me during class. So much for making a statement against Hollywood and their overused ideas.

Thank Yew!

There aren't enough great comics today to make a movie like this. i saw this new in the movie theatre. I Begged my mom to take me. Had the 3 stooges for a few seconds. What a great collection of comics! Think maybe, Magnolia for kids??

Lurkerbunny: Am I the only person here who enjoyed Rat Race?

No. I particularly enjoyed the bus full of Lucys, and Lovitz's bizarre transformation into "you know who else didn't like ensemble casts"?

2007-10-30 07:47:41 PM
I say we just take all the original surviving cast members, fly them into Vegas, put them into a vault 40 feet under one of those luxury restaurants, and give them each a jar filled with exactly three fireflies.

No, it had it's moments. But it's no MMMMW.

//Rowan Atkinson is okay.

Lynches Boritom, along with all those who hated Rat Race, which was no MMMMW, as someone already said. Anyone who didn't think the Hitler scene was funny should show proof that they served in WWII or DIAF.

As far as the necessary star power? Depends on if you need comedians or just top film stars. Buntz gave a list of stars. Now comedians...

John Cleese (again)
Lewis Black
Steven Colbert
Eddie Izzard
Will Ferrell
Robin Williams
Jim Carrey
Trey Parker & Matt Stone
Mike Meyers

And this is just off the top of my head. Could probably also use a bunch of people like Josh Blue of Last Comic Standing if you're going for comedy over fame

2007-10-30 09:12:30 PM
MMW was a slapstick comedy movie made by aging slapstick artists (not counting Spencer Tracy); not political commentators, stand up, etc.

It just can't be done today.

2007-10-30 09:27:41 PM
Fireproof: John Cleese (again)

Put him in the spot originally occupied by Terry-Thomas. Or perhaps as the schoolmaster he played in 'Clockwise'.

The reason there are so many old-time stars in the original pic is that most of them were still under contract to the "old studio" system. The heads at MGM allowed a lot of them to finally get out of those contracts if they'd just do this one zany picture. A lot of the stars were happy to get out of the strict contracts...and just as many were happy to get the work.

At least that's how I heared it.

I greatly enjoyed it as well, and I'm a huge fan of MMMMW.

/still quotes Rowan Atkinson saying "Eeets a race! I'm weeening!"
//Laughed maniacally when Seth Green destroyed the radar.
///Klaus Barbie museum, and stealing Hitler's car
////The ending sucked enormous balls. They should have ended the movie 10 minutes earlier. When I watch this on DVD, that's when I end the movie.

I enjoyed Rat Race. The scene where Whoopi and daughter are rocketing through the desert and end up staggering onto the slow bus cracks me up every time.

MMMMW I sometimes enjoy. It depends on the day, the mood etc. I think Hallelujah Trail may be the long-comic flick I enjoy more.

2007-10-30 10:45:10 PM
They used to show this movie once a year on prime time TV on one of the major networks way back in the day. By itself, it runs close to three hours, add in the commercials and you've got a four hour block of programming easily filled! I never missed it! We'd pop a huge bowl of popcorn, drink Pepsi and laugh our heads off at this wonderful film.

Of course, this was back when networks used to show movies as part of their regular schedule! It seems like it's been decades since they've done that.

Tyler Fitzgerald: Anybody can fly plane. Now here. I'll check you out. Put your little hands on the wheel there. Now put your feet on the rudder. There. Who says this ol' boy can't fly this ol' plane? Now I'm gonna make us some Old Fashioneds the old-fashioned way - the way dear old Dad used to!

Wasn't there an amazing sequence where Jonathan Winters goes completely berserk and smashes a gas station or something?

It has been 20+ years since I saw this film last but I think I recall the funniest scene as being Winters going into this insane furious frenzy and smashing this place up.

Totally wild.
Maybe some other screwball comedy from the early 60s.
