Joe Thaler, head of TransWorld Exhibits Inc., runs the annual Halloween Expo for big-box retailers. The costumes have since moved to the plus-size market for adult women and now come in teen and preteen versions

I sure hope not, since as you appear to be equating 'geisha' with 'prostitute', you are fairly clueless yourself.

There's also something to be said that that 'geisha girl' costune you link to is only 'geisha' in the same sense that that's the only word that your average target shopper can associate with japanese females. that outfit has as much to do with geisha (or maiko, for that matter) as somebody wearing a cheap polyester suit trying to pass themselves off as 'abraham lincoln.'

No, not the queen of hearts. Alice. And apparently the drama department is putting on a Wonderland themed party, which works, since my friend is going as the Mad Hatter, and my next door neighbor is going as the queen of hearts.

From TFA "Gabby Cirenza, 11, of Alexandria wound up as Lady Juliette after her mother vetoed several racier costumes. (By Melina Mara -- The Washington Post)"

The ironic thing is that Juliet was 13 in the play (And... yes, she has sex with Romeo). How's that for a role model for a 13 year old. Sleeps with older boys, then cuts herself to death.

The hardcore girls just wear lingerie and some form of animal ears.

BTW, The Slush, a geisha is not a prostitute, though some of the geisha costumes would have you think otherwise. Don't know if you are up on Japanese culture or not.

This can actually be easily traced to the influence of pop culture on society. The images seen on TV and the words heard in song are a constant influence on the youth in this nation. The underlying current in pop culture is one of sexualized and objectified females. Why? Because those who control the output are males. Plain and simple. They push the content to match what they want to see. It serves only to scratch that itch.

Combine that with the conservative push to have subservient women and it is easy to see why girls are being compelled to objectify themselves at younger and younger ages.

Geisha (芸者, Geisha?) or Geigi (芸妓, Geigi?) are traditional, female Japanese entertainers, whose skills include performing various Japanese arts, such as classical music and dance. Contrary to popular opinion and stereotypes, geisha are not prostitutes and do not engage in sexual activity as part of their job.

I'm a little irritated with all the young girls dressing all sexy. When I was Rainbow Brite as a child, I had a plastic mask and a plastic red smock thing.

When I was Rainbow Brite two years ago, I got molested by Dorothy. No plastic mask for me!

And the fact that they make "Plus Size Sexy Costumes" just makes me wanna puke.

What... she might become a talented dancer, musician, and singer, as well as an accomplished conversationalist who can pour drinks with poise and style, and do it all while making drunk, power-hungry businessmen feel like they deserve their inflated egos?

Most geisha weren't whores, the whores worked around the corner. They were more like psychiatrists... listening to people talk about themselves, administering calming medicine, and separating fools from their money.

That's a myth. Geisha are not prostitutes. See Wikipedia (pops) for more details.

/some prostitutes, though, dress sort of like geisha
//check the obi - bow in front = prostitute, bow in back = geisha

I really do think this is sad. Not merely from the perspective that younger and younger girls are being introduced to an increasingly sexualized media, but from the perspective that young men are expected to see this sort of thing and repress their urges, regardless of whether the attention is consensual or not. We encourage our daughters to dress like the raciest of whores did twenty years ago, and slap young men who react to it as can only be expected with sex offender status?

We treat minors as though they are unable to make decisions for themselves - all right. It's reasonable to assume that some of the young girls wearing this kind of thing aren't aware of the sexual connotations it grants thus, perhaps one might assume it is inappropriate? It is just as reasonable to assume that young boys aren't intimately familiar with the process of law dealing with this kind of thing. Is it simple chance that human bodies mature sexually far sooner than they mature emotionally? No - it is nature's perogative, saying "reproduce now, while you're young, and you can deal with the consequences later".

Our society, unfortunately, is not built to support this kind of life-changing event and that age, nor, perhaps, should it be; what was good for the species thousands of years ago is not now - we live longer, healthier lives, and the chance of death during childbirth is far less than it once was.

So I think that the corporations taking advantage of this kind of thing - the money-grubbing idiots in charge of decisions at costume-making companies, the media outlets that popularize dressing for sex appeal at ages where acting on this is normally punished by law - should be dealt the full extent of the law that would touch the victims of the popularization and commercialization of these inappropriate clothes, and further the inappropriate conduct therein implied.
