Gee, no stupid "STILL NO CURE FOR CANCER!" cliche? At least some article submitters aren't flaming idiots.

I think I heard one time that the Amish had a higher rate of dwarfism and having 6 fingers. Anybody?

That Amish actually have a better understanding of genetics than most folks. They're also pretty strict about who marries who, in order to prevent inbreeding. Hence if Jeremiah in Lancaster has come of age and there isn't a suitable mate available locally, they import one from Ohio or export him to another clan there. Overall they're real nice folks, just wish they'd at least adopt deodorant in the summer.

I think the chinese are a bit more than 1% of the world population. Wouldn't that give us about 125 billion people? Anyways, I'd love to be amish, as long as I didn't have to change my religious beliefs. And as long as I could use electricity again a week later. And as long as I didn't have to do any chores....

Would an Amish person abort the fetus? If the DNA pattern makes the person and make the 'human life'. They could just send it (the Genome) out to get sequenced and save it on CDROM-a human 'life' would be saved. They'd still have the DNA pattern saved on CD-Rom, and ditch the biological meida. A cell is just media, so is a CD-ROM. They could take the CD-Rom, invite it to family reunions, give it presents at Christmas. And if the ultra-right make a DNA pattern 'human life'--then I could just get a set of CD-Rom to claim as dependents on my income tax! Whoo Hoo!

the amish irritate the crap out of me. how, exactly, do you just arbitrarily pick a year to stop advancing in technology??? why didn't they stop in 1946 instead of 1846?? i've actually done more reading on this subject than i care to admit, and i still haven't figured it out...

You know, you really need to keep an eye on the Amish. They seem nice, but they're not. I grew up near Lancaster also.. (Lebanon County) so I know all about them...

MooKow: How would you explain all the bike-riding Amish I see around here then?

hey bivets, this entire topic is an example of evolution in action,

sometimes random mutation=bad

sometimes it =good

I live around those hick vampires... They insist that they don't fark their kin, but how ELSE would you consistently have kids born with VITAL ORGANS COMPLETELY MISSING? Having no liver isn't on the same level as having buck teeth.

I used to live in Lancaster, PA. On days when the farmer's market was open I would sometimes see a one-legged Amish Dwarf. I thought the odds of that happening were pretty astronomical until I gave it a little thought.

I can't imagine that they get many converts, they must be dealing with a fairly limited genepool. If this were England we'd make the Amish our royalty.

I think this story has got to be full of crap. Ain't no self respecting Amish gonna let no scientist study them - das for sure!

I can't believe nobody has posted the Amish laptop.
