Meh...15 years ago, Killer Bees were going to be the end of America. Now, they're some scientists upset because there aren't enough bees. Kind of like the Global Cooling to Global Warming thing. Maybe they'll start calling Accelerated Bee Population Change.

FTFA: "It's the most unique thing in nature there is. I mean you stick your head inside that beehive, and it's, you know, it's something about bees that just makes the rest of the world just seem to go away," Hackenberg says. Hackenberg says he gets along with his bees "fine."

Okay... that's it... I just threw up more than a little in my mouth. This guy's a freakin' Apis melliferaphile!

//I do like ilovebees though

A buddy of mine keeps bees (he is Mennonite). He said this is TOTALLY overblown and is not killing all the bees in the country. It is just the media having a slow news day.

2007-10-30 03:47:49 AM
I thought the rapture would involve cars from mars and eating guitars and all that other stuff Debbie Harry talked about.

Never expected bees.

/Debbie Harry > bees, as far as the apocalypse goes

Shaggy_C: Meh... start calling (it) Accelerated Bee Population Change.

1) Acronym it as A.B.C. and write a book w/catchy title
2) Take that buzzphrase to the talk circuit to promote said book
3) Profit!

Well, basically, the chemical, the manufacturers of this product say it breaks down their immune system, causes memory loss, causes nervous system disorders. It causes the insects to quit feeding," Hackenberg says.

Sounds like problem solved, with the manufacturer fully admitting what the chemical does, this needs to be banned until a variant that is safe for bees can be made. We do not need prettier food for a little while and risk destroying our ecosystem for years to come.

If the bees don't pollinate the hops and barley, you are not far off.

I saw this on 60 minutes on Sunday...are they seriously just getting around to reporting this? I thought this has been around (and reported on) for the last year or so.

Hmm? No, that was about and down the news all year long, wasn't it?

This was on PBS' Nature on Sunday too. It already has a catchy name: Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Sounds like the name of a band. ("There's BEEn a lot of BUZZ about CCD lately...")

The doco was interesting, and kinda scary too (there are areas of China where humans now have to act as pollinators because the bees are gone).

With that Seinfeld bee flick getting press, this situation will probably get more exposure, which I think is a good thing. Thanks Jerry!

Techincally, you'd be the one doing the pollenating.

The fact that you don't see the gaping idiocy of your argument is proof that the only viable response is to laugh at you and forget about it.

*laughs*

Done.

"mile upon mile of wild blueberries were in bloom just waiting to be pollinated."

Too bad there's nothing else that will pollinate them. Going by this story our entire food supply should collapse next year. Quick, buy more newspapers.

It's monoculture that's killing the bees... it's resulting in malnutrition and poor health.

meshman: "mile upon mile of wild blueberries were in bloom just waiting to be pollinated."Too bad there's nothing else that will pollinate them. Going by this story our entire food supply should collapse next year. Quick, buy more newspapers.

It's a story that's been going on over the past year and people's response is, "Oh, how strange." and don't really think about it after that. What's left to pollinate is wild bees, bumblebees, and some varietys of pollinating wasps and moths. All of which don't quite exist in the vast numbers that the domesticated bees did as used by commercial fruit growers. The North American fruit and vegetable industry may be in serious trouble. Berries and orchard fruits may get rather expensive.

space_cadet_28: Go to montreal. They attacked me everywhere i went. (they hang around the trash cans)

Those are common hornets. Those little mofos don't pollinate anything, they just eat garbage and try to attack helpless passersbys. Not as bad as yellowjackets, those little biatches all will try to attack you at once if you swat just one.

I doubt that monoculture farming is the single culprit here, although it may play a part. My neighbor across the street has two hobby hives in her back yard, and both were empty this spring with all the symptoms of CCD. We live in suburban Denver, with a great diversity of food for the bees nearby and no heavy pesticide use like one would see in agricultural country. We did have a cold and snowy winter by Denver standards last year, so that may also play a part, but she has had her hives for many years, through other cold winters, and never lost one previously. Interesting.

When you have a bee go into your ear when you're 16,
and you have to get mineral oil poured into your ear to drown the bee,
and a doctor extracts HALF of the dead bee from your ear,
and the other half comes out on its own a couple of weeks later covered in earwax,
you really don't see the loss of all the bees in the world as a negative.

/just sayin'

2007-10-30 12:55:55 PM
this couldn't possibly be an old story from few months ago could it? same headline and all.... last time I checked, they had found the virus responsible for the bee disappearances, which originated from Australia.

/figured I'd ruin the suspense for all y'all.

Hops/barley air born pollinators don't need bee's also grapes don't require bees. The beer/wine industry is safe... carry on.

It's so sad that China, once a bastion of innovation, invention, and intellectualism, has become a wasteland whose like could previously only be seen on "Captain Planet". I wonder if even killer bees could survive there.
