I was looking at an identical experiment earlier today :)

2007-10-27 12:01:46 AM
That was pretty cool. I was surprised how big the balloon got at altitude.

I live in Alabama and we are fed up of people wasting our money on stupid things like this You should be fighting in irak and stopping terrorists from attacking America instead of sending stupid balloons up.

We have AIR FORCE to take pictures.

We Americans must stop muslin terrorists..We must fght for justice, democracy and civisation and stop forigners despoiling this great country.

GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Please, someone find this person and sterilize them before they breed...

I wonder if the FAA might have an interest in unmanned objects in controlled airspace...

I just loved esecallum. In his defense, I do find muslin very irritating. I think it's rather rough and I despise the texture. So we really should fght those who terrorize the free civisations of this world with horribly rough muslin.

Greeeeaatt project!!! I'm glad I was able to peruse before the link got farked.

Send an HD camera up next time :-)

It's on Digg, Reddit, and Fark - of course it's gonna be dead.

Wow, I thought it was feet at first. Altitude: 30,156 m. That's like 18.5 miles in American, right?

Spectacular.

I regularly see cooler experiments than that. Which is more elegant, strapping a camera to a balloon or deciphering the motions and activities of proteins?

Still, those were some pretty pictures.

My mother has been irritated by those muslins for years. But she does love her some frahijtas - those Mexican wrap things with the grilled veggies and meat.

I love the female "scientist" at the recovery:

"Can we get the pictures now??"

"Oh, that's sad ..."

Also -- the crew was cool (even the whiny girl), and had mad skillz that I can only dream of; but what's with the parachute entanglement problem kicking their collective asses? Seems to me there are two workable solutions:

1) Stow the parachute and a section of line *IN* the balloon, so it only deploys when the balloon pops, or:

2) Attach the parachute BENEATH the capsule, on a section of line longer than the one that anchors to the balloon.

Seems like either of these would keep the chute from getting tangled.

/Estes experience FTW

Subby fails. No mention of Aperture Science at any point in TFV. There will be no cake for you.

Indis: Wow, I thought it was feet at first. Altitude: 30,156 m. That's like 18.5 miles in American, right?

18.7380697 miles according to Google, only 1,062 feet shy of 100,000 feet. You were really close! That is ridiculously high for something not passing that altitude on its way to space.

That's kinda cool, but the only Halo anyone cares about is the Master Chief or Naked Snake dropping HALO style into the depths of whatever country he dropped into in MGS3.

I forget where he was, I was drunk the entire time I played that game. I think it was in Kentucky at some point. There was a distillery.

Some people in those videos are still alive. Guess it's time to do more SCIENCE.

FTFA: Also, I have verified that the Earth is indeed round

Bullshiat. You've verified that a small part of the Earth appears to be curved as though part of a larger sphere or cylinder. Let's not start rehearsing our Nobel acceptance speech just yet there, boyo.

Still, it's an important data point in the controversial field of terrestrial geometry, so good work.

That was bloody damn cool! Those videos of the high alt. and general blackness of space are more inspiring than anything Imax could throw at me simply because of the homemade, low-tech quality.

Oh, and the whiny glasses chick was pretty hot. I'd hit it as long as she'd STFU.

Just beautiful. Got me a nice couple of wallpapers for when I'm skydive-craving and I'm immersed in work.

Do you guys reckon that this can be done with under $500? For what it seems, this guy spent well over a K

Excellent stuff (but I've got motion sickness now).

Maybe the next flight could include a gyroscope or two.

100,000 feet is very impressive for an amateur project.
