I think most would assume it's just the Star Trek logo.

2007-10-26 11:35:39 AM
and everyone that sees it will take you for a star trek nerd.

there's a couple of cars around here w/ the FSM symbol on the bumper. based on where i live, i'm sure i'm the only one that has ever recognized it....

2007-10-26 11:36:50 AM
Too Trek-like and too much like a car brand logo.

2007-10-26 11:40:02 AM
The Darwin fish w/ the wee little legs is way better.

2007-10-26 11:41:40 AM
I also think it looks like a car brand logo.

My favorite symbol is the fish with little feet. Haven't seen any FSM around here, but I did teach my Sunday school class about it.

2007-10-26 11:49:32 AM
I thought atheists already had a symbol?

Here's the one the US Government uses for them. Is this one not official?

i've seen (everywhere) the little-footed-fish place being eaten by another fish with the word TRUTH on its side.

/lives in wjllope.rice.edu...

Looks like the @ symbol to me.

I think more apropos would be an outline of a brain.

2007-10-26 11:54:54 AM
Now everyone who has an e-mail address will be supporting atheism.

The "@" is the mark of the beast foretold in the bible. With the advent of e-commerce, it will soon be impossible to conduct any business transactions without it.

Renounce the mark of the beast. All true believers, shun the evil of the internet and email.

What's the unicode character 666?
ϧ --- is this it? (it's what I get)

2007-10-26 12:15:50 PM
oh BTW - how did the fish become 'infamous'?

/other than making kareem sick on Airplane of course

2007-10-26 12:23:20 PM
Cue the empty set symbol.

2007-10-26 12:31:13 PM
Actually, the first thing I thought of when I saw it was the 'R' symbol used by Robin the boy wonder.

//comic nerd, slinking back into basement

The mental process that requires a symbol to demonstrate what you believe in to others is no different from the mental process that requires a pre-fabricated belief system in the first place.

Dunno, but when I hold and hit the number 6 three times on the keypad, I get this: Ü

That's the true mark of the beast.

/Now begins the new beast wars

I can't see this catching on. The percentage of atheists who feel the need to seek validation by proclaiming their personal views on religion to the world is much, much smaller than the percentage of Christians who feel the need to do so.

2007-10-26 01:06:29 PM
And anyway, it appears that for some reason Acura drivers must all be atheists, since they all drive around with a very similar emblem on their cars:

I thought we had this:

The idea of getting together and declaring "this is our symbol!" is a little nutty. This things have to occur naturally.

Agreed. For most atheists I know, their atheism isn't really the nucleus of their mind the way Christians consider their religion to be. It's more of a coincidental fact, with other pursuits taking up their time and energy. If they did put this on their car, it would be more of a humorous snark to the vans with their fishies; not so much a proud declaration of atheism.

//agnostic myself. I'm too lazy to take a side
//besides, how long before some redneck keys 'sshole' in the paint beside of your 'A'?

Just use your head. No symbol needed.

Dinki

Obvious pick. A tin foil hat would also be appropriate.

2007-10-26 01:10:02 PM
Evolutionism is the tinfoil hat atheists wear to keep God out of their brainwaves.

2007-10-26 01:10:49 PM
Damn it. A minute too slow!

2007-10-26 01:11:48 PM
Wouldn't no symbol at all be more appropriate?

2007-10-26 01:11:51 PM
I always thought the Atheist car symbol was "SAAB" (that's latin for atheist)

Werd. I don't drive around with a bumper sticker that says "My other car is NOT an Acura, Audi, Bentley, Buick..."

/welcome to the new, more inclusionary world

Cool, I already use that in all of my email addresses. What are the odds?

Jon Snow: Evolutionism is the tinfoil hat atheists wear to keep God out of their brainwaves.

Any deity that can't pierce foil is no God for me!

SchlingFo: Wouldn't no symbol at all be more appropriate?

Well, then you can't separate the agnos from the no-nos.

Like, there are left and right turn signals, but no "I'm going straight here" signal. You can't tell who just forgot to signal. Or am I thinking too much like a programmer?

// Would like a bumper sticker that says "No Comment".

2007-10-26 01:36:56 PM
As an atheist, I have no need to tell the driving public anything more than which way I'm turning.

2007-10-26 01:38:11 PM
Honda's gonna sue em.

2007-10-26 01:39:32 PM
I could go with a sign that sais, "How about you NOT rell me about your religion?"

The Agnostics' Symbol may or may not be in development.

I will never understand what compels people to want to define who they are by putting idiotic symbols or bumperstickers on their farking cars. Do you people honestly think I give a shiat who you voted for or how religious you are? Aside from pigeonholing yourself in the eyes of everyone around you, what is the farking point?

to underscore that they feel more strongly about that than you do. they want to tell you that they're hardcore....
plus maybe a bit of evangelism - hey look, that guy is so serious about that that he defaced his car to tell me about it - i should look into that myself....

It's the "I'm better/more cleaver/more correct/more hip, etc. than you are" angle...

It's a good thing that I've had contacts with atheists outside of Fark/the internet, because otherwise I might end up thinking that they are the most farking obnoxious bunch in America.

/TFD: Non-god types...what do you say when someone tells you "God bless you" or something of the sort? TFette never knows what to say other than "Save it for someone who believes in such, thanks."
