I'm sure the subtext of the book was very relevent to the lesson plan though.

Why can't you appreciate the subtext?!

I read that book for a college English class and it definitely is pretty graphic, but fark censorship

How about teaching something useful? You know, like English? Surely there are countless classics that could be taught without going to the "having sex with dead bodies" book.

Uptight douchebags strike again...

If you're so afraid of what your precious children might be exposed to, then 1) don't have them, or if you must, 2) home school them and never let set foot outside the house.

Why is it cops are immune from most prosecutions when they abuse, hassle, or kill people intentionally or negligently ... yet teachers routinely get hassled, sued, and jailed for consensual or approved acts?

"Parents have sought to ban various books, including John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" and J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, as well as books on Cuba or gay penguins, according to the American Library Association"

In Tuscola, south of Abilene, "Child of God" was on a list of titles compiled by all of the high school English teachers for a pre-Advanced Placement class.

Wait, so this teacher didn't even PICK the book and he is in trouble?

God damn this country is retarded!

...In 2005, a seventh-grade teacher in Grand Rapids, Mich., was suspended and later transferred to another school after a parent complained about a classroom reading of "Telephone Man," a story about prejudice containing racial slurs...

Good lord. I'm not sure which is more disturbing: that some people are so incapable of establishing context for "dirty" words or that a single oversensitive complaint can nearly ruin a man's career.

OK - a book I've never read, but will have to add to my library!

I make it a point to keep a collection of books banned by various groups just because I can. I have made contributions to the local library, both monetary and books, to keep a shelf of 'banned books' so that great 'literature' is available. Some titles?

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
Where's Waldo? by Martin Hanford

Not to mention, Shakespeare (take your pick - Hamlet and The Scottish Play are the most objectionable), the Bible and
just about anything by Henry Miller or D.H. Lawrence.

My opinion is that a parent should have at least the same amount of education, if not more, as the teacher before they can be allowed to challenge anything in a classroom curriculum.

Ignorant parents suck!!!!

Spider Rico: How about teaching something useful? You know, like English? Surely there are countless classics that could be taught without going to the "having sex with dead bodies" book.

The student selected it off a reading list. It wasn't assigned, and it wasn't being "taught." The list simply included Pulitzer Prize-winning authors, of which McCarthy is the most recent.
