Yes.

Yes, he is.

2007-10-23 12:35:38 PM
The best I've ever seen. He is indeed ridiculous.

He is also coming along solidly as a wideout this year.

He is also coming along solidly as a wideout this year.

This. He was key in that 4th quarter drive to win it against the Eagles. He kept the defense far enough from the middle of the field for Adrian Peterson and the tight ends to get first down yardage, and had a couple of nice gains himself.

2007-10-23 01:10:12 PM
For this year...yes.

Don't forget Dante Hall, Deion Sanders, Eric Metcalf, and I know I am missing a few others.

JayR30

Did Dante Hall do anything outside of his first year, show promise as a wide-receiver, or force opposing teams to hand the Chiefs the ball at their 40 or better for the entire game?

2007-10-23 01:13:13 PM
No one is even kicking to him any more. It is less of a threat to kick the ball out at the 50 and try to stop the Bears offense than it is to let Hester have the opportunity to return one.

2007-10-23 01:16:38 PM
R.A.Danny

True, but eventually someone will have to kick it to him. If the Bears defense (fingers crossed) manages to pin an opposing punter underneath the uprights then they have to gamble by kicking it to Hester, unless they want to give the Bears a gimme field goal. Remember, Hester returns every 13th kick for a touchdown, so it's not like he's going to score every time.

2007-10-23 01:18:31 PM
Neon Deion.

2007-10-23 01:22:04 PM
JayR30: For this year...yes.

He's already equaled anything that any other returner has ever done in the NFL. 22 games. Only 22 freaking games.

2007-10-23 01:23:41 PM
Yes, next question.

R.A. Danny's point is great though... imagine if Hester had a good offense like Indy or New England to back him up. You certainly wouldn't "take your chances" to kick punts out of bounds or squib kick kickoffs to give the offense a short field.

The thing watching all of them back to back is not only how his speed kills, but, he is very adept at dodging tackles and recognizing where the coverage is and where he should try.

2007-10-23 01:24:28 PM
Deion says, "HEY! Remember me?!"

Don't you mean "Chicago's ten special teams players blocking everyone in front of Devin Hester: Are they the best special teams ever?"

kronicfeld: Don't you mean "Chicago's ten special teams players blocking everyone in front of Devin Hester: Are they the best special teams ever?"

That is a good point, although, I'd say that that's good for only about 25-30% max of why Hester is blowing away kick return records. There are lots of kick returners who can't shrug off tackles or don't have the speed and vision to take advantage of the holes given (or, in some cases, make their own holes, if you watch some of those returns).

Fark It: Did Dante Hall do anything outside of his first year, show promise as a wide-receiver, or force opposing teams to hand the Chiefs the ball at their 40 or better for the entire game

Yes, yes and sort of. Hall made opposing teams kickoff out of bounds and give up field position for entire games to avoid kicking for him. Not sure if some statistical anomaly like 40 or better for a whole game ever happened (it helps when you play a Cheifs team that only scores twice).

Hester is a better returner though. It's crazy to think about as good as Hall was in 2003 that there would be someone better this soon. It'll be interesting to see how long he can keep it up, as of right now I can't fathom why teams even think about kicking to him if they can help it.

A topic that came up because of Hester recently:

Should the NFL penalize on punts going out of bounds like they do with kickoffs (like maybe a 10 yard penalty tacked on to where it went out of bounds) to encourage more punt returns?

I'd like to see the UFL institute that in their first season next year. I think its a better and safer way of making the punt return part of the game better than the XFL/CFL plan of no fair catches.

2007-10-23 01:56:55 PM
He screws up far too often. How many fumbles has he had? The kick returns make the headlines, but the dropped balls and fumbles don't.

dletter: Should the NFL penalize on punts going out of bounds like they do with kickoffs (like maybe a 10 yard penalty tacked on to where it went out of bounds) to encourage more punt returns?

Yes, if your goal is to try to create a bunch of highlight reel footage, rather than engaging, hard-fought games in which teams have to drive from deep inside their own territory. Which is probably right up the NFL's alley.

Mel Gray was pretty damn impressive (at least, that's what I kind of remember)

kronicfeld: "Chicago's ten special teams players blocking everyone in front of Devin Hester: Are they the best special teams ever?"

They're good. But Hester breaks two or three tackles on his own...and he just slides in between guys when it looks like there's no room.

It's like he's Paper Mario.

Paper Hester.

Further proof it's NOT primarily the Bears Special Teams ten that get the job done for Hester, here is a collage of what he did at Miami (new window)

This clip is crazy.

I nominate that field goal return against the Giants as the best return ever. Starts of walking like he's gonna take a knee, then just bursts out of the endzone. Totally caught the Giants off guard, and that play totally deflated the Giants for the rest of the game.

2007-10-23 02:58:43 PM
I think the Bears are, overall, not that great of a team, but I cannot deny the ability of Hester. He's ridiculous.

It's like he's in Madden with a cheat code on sometimes.

2007-10-23 03:00:26 PM
Not only is he a bad ass in that regard. Check out his ride, that's all class right there.

FalloutBoy: "What's up internet" is the best YouTube intro ever.

Devin Hester should catch a punt/kickoff near the sidelines, stare right into a sideline camera, say "What's up, internet?", then return it for a touchdown.

If you ever saw Gale Sayers return a kick you wouldn't approach Hester. I hate him, but Deon was the best ever.

2007-10-23 05:22:31 PM
Henry "Gizmo" Williams is flat out the best ever....he did play in the CFL for the Eskimos....which probably invalidates his position in most of your eyes.....but man, that guy could fly.

2007-10-23 05:23:33 PM
dhudd: but Deon was the best ever.

No, he's not. Hester has already destroyed him. And Gale Sayers is the only one you could say is with Hester.

Deion Sanders

Hester has 8 punt and kick returns for TD's in the last two season. The next closest team has 4. The man is awesome.

The answer is Mel Gray

2007-10-23 05:30:16 PM
At the very least, he's the best returner over a two year period that league has ever seen. You know what I love about the guy? The way he's smart enough to not go into full throttle as soon as he touches the ball. He trusts his blockers, baits the opposition into basically running right into them, and only then does he accelerate from 1st to 5th gear, breaking two tacklers for good measure. His return approach should be mandatory viewing for every special teams unit on every football team from high school level up.

10 if you count the missed field goal and the Super Bowl return.

I would have said him until Hester came along.

It's not unbelievable...they were playing DUKE for gods sake. In football. They suck.

2007-10-23 05:40:59 PM
The Chicago Bears play by play man is just awful. He sounds like he's 10. He has to be like the son of one of the owners or something.

And I'd rather have Hester than Deion. Deion was the best cover corner ever, Hester is a better returner.

2007-10-23 05:41:36 PM
And the funny thing about football is that he'll probably be out of the league in 3 years.

And that last return was sick.

2007-10-23 05:45:35 PM
Hester is the best I've seen. I've never seen teams go so out of their way to avoid a return man...repeatedly...as the Ickles did on Sunday.

Deion was good, but Hester is on a different level.
