That was a pretty funny story.

/I wonder what the kid was actually drinking it for

2007-10-17 06:03:29 AM
he probably thought it was malt liquor

2007-10-17 06:10:48 AM
Great story! Once in a while the clerks win.

2007-10-17 06:14:14 AM
That was great!

2007-10-17 06:18:03 AM
I never knew that Tolstoy was a clerk.

In general, I don't like unions, but this was a case where it was good that they're there.

2007-10-17 06:19:15 AM
Ah, what a truly fun story.

2007-10-17 06:25:17 AM
Heh. The sad life of a convenience store clerk ;)

2007-10-17 06:27:53 AM
As for the legal case for being forced out of work due to hostile working conditions and the hundred-and-one violations of my worker's rights, that has now been settled. I REALLY can't say anything about that.

CHA CHING!

2007-10-17 06:29:27 AM
And I have to add....That story is one great example of why unions are your friends

A new hero for everyone who has ever worked in retail.

2007-10-17 07:13:50 AM
Wow. I guess stubbornness really does pay off sometimes.

2007-10-17 07:19:15 AM
That was well worth the 15 mins of work time i just took to read it.

Excellent story. Would read again.

2007-10-17 07:26:22 AM
It's (slightly) old, but it's majestic.

2007-10-17 07:30:57 AM
I never thought I would spend 20 min reading about vinegar. Good job.

2007-10-17 07:36:50 AM
Clerk deserves the HERO tag

2007-10-17 07:39:51 AM
That was awesome to read.

The mother of Vinegar Boy was an asshat.

Preface: I've worked in retail for 30 years.

This idiot clerk should have just pulled his head out of his ass, crossed his fingers behind his back, and apologized to the woman. But no, he had to go whining to his union about it.

Crazy customers aren't worth all of this shiat. Pretend to apologize to them and get on with your life.

This clerk is going to be a clerk (or less) all his life. Loser.

Kyosuke: This idiot clerk should have just pulled his head out of his ass, crossed his fingers behind his back, and apologized to the woman. But no, he had to go whining to his union about it.

Perhaps you missed the bit near the end when he points out that apologising for the incident could have opened the door to the crazy lady suing the company.

But even beyond that, why the fark should he have to apologise when he did absolutely nothing wrong? Fark that for a laugh.

DammitIForgotMyLogin: Perhaps you missed the bit near the end when he points out that apologising for the incident could have opened the door to the crazy lady suing the company.

And she gets laughed out of court. Wooo.

DammitIForgotMyLogin: But even beyond that, why the fark should he have to apologise when he did absolutely nothing wrong?

Because it gets the idiot customer out of your life with the least amount of stress and stupidity. Look at all the money and time spent because of one stupid clerk's ego. Ultimately, the customer won this anyway, only she got the company and union to spend thousands of dollars and tons of time on it.

I was kind of on the clerk's side until he brought the union into it.

Kyosuke

Not exactly a principled person, are you?

2007-10-17 08:16:34 AM
Kyosuke

That's some stupid shiat you're slinging , right there.

Why should he admit wrong doing? To make life easier? That's absolutely ridiculous.

It's also fairly spineless and demostrates that you will lie when it's convienent, and if that's how you approach your work, you seem like you'd be a pretty piss poor employee to me.

2007-10-17 08:19:10 AM
Kyosuke: And she gets laughed out of court. Wooo.

Except that, if they followed your philosophy, they'd just cave and pay her off to get it over with the least amount of stress and stupidity.

But I guess you always take the easy way out of any problems you incur in your life?

2007-10-17 08:39:12 AM
I kept waiting for the line, "I wasn't even supposed to be in that day," but, alas, was disappointed.

That was my only disappointement, though - this was a great story about someone standing up for themselves and not falling trap to the idiotic "apologize and it will go away" mentality.

If he had apologized, the mother could have had the tapes played in court, which would have been seen as an admission of guilt and she would have indeed won her case. This way, the clerk did the correct thing, uncovered an incompetent and possibly criminal manager, an incompetent supervisor, and bettered his own position in life by his honesty.

We need more people like this who don't have a problem being "just a clerk" and take pride in their job.

Some odd things about this story:

This is a reprint from last year on the web site TF is linking to.

It first bubbled up in 2005.

Almost no one questions this story even though it seems like serious shennanigans.

Why is there no evidence? It's been around now for two years and not one news source has picked it up.

How can the guy who's not allowed to talk about what happened (because he insinuates he got a big settlement) talk about what happened? He even admits to misconduct and lying. That seems suspicious to me. If I'd just gotten a settlement, the last thing I'd do to jeopardize that would be post a long story that could easily be traced back to me.

This is fake.

It is a great story, but you're right. There is alot about this story that doesn't make sense.

For those wondering why the person didn't just cross his fingers and apologize?

When I was going through college, I worked at a drug store that had a simple rule. The cashiers could never admit wrongdoing by the store.. on anything. You did it, and you were canned.

Maybe his store had a similar rule.

/If the story is true.
//Which, it probably isn't.

This, folks, is what 30 years in retail will do to you.

2007-10-17 09:29:42 AM
The clerk should have looked her in the eye, and reached over and pull her across the counter and beat her into a bloody mass. Then drag her out back, dig a hole and toss her still twitching body in, then drop a deuce on her head, cover her up and salt the ground so nothing ever grows there again.

Or do what her did.

Which ever.

This reminds me of the vinegar drinking competitions we used to see in college over who would get the last chicken wing. Absolutely disgusting to see, the belches were like evil escaping from the deepest pits of Hell, and it was priceless to see their faces when we pooled enough to get another plate (after the drink-off).

/malt usually did better than normal
//still disgusting

2007-10-17 09:34:07 AM
So why didn't the mother just look at her idiot kid and say "Now, what did you learn from this?"
