Who'da thunk that a device designed to ensnare sea creatures would ensnare sea creatures?

Eh, I'd take this report with a grain of salt. I'm not very trusting of environmental organizations that shoot steroids and hit each other over the head with folding chairs.

So is the average can of tuna going to taste better, or worse?

Just tackling the issue that really matter.

Well done. I lol'd, unexpectedly.

I guess those special nets I remember seeing articles about more than 25 years ago never really made it out to the trawlers?

And those nets are doing an even better job of rapidly decimating the bluefin tuna population. I am not sure I can face a future without tuna in the sushi.

Phew, I was afraid they were being over fished. If they're only taking one in ten we're better off than I thought.

The environmental/conservationist's crowd tells me that we are overfishing the planet and killing off whole species.

The medical crowd is telling me to eat fish 2-3 times a week to stay healthy and help prevent nasty diseases.

What do I do? What do I do? Eat fish and be happy or join the conservationist's and die sooner yet knowing I made a difference? Aaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!

Maybe they should trawl those nets downtown. Scrap some of the rotten tuna that prowls there.

If you're wondering about how to eat fish and not feel like you're wiping out species, there is good info at this link from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

They use a traffic-light colour coding system to indicate 'best choices', 'good alternatives', and 'avoid', and you can print out a card to keep in your wallet. It's also done up for different regions in the US so you can find out about fish you're likely to see in stores and restaurants in your area.

/TFA makes me sad :/

Mussels - plus the "classic" way to prepare them involve lots of butter, wine and shallots and washed down with Belgian beer.

/most mussles are farmed and actually better than "wild" since farming allows them to grow bigger

"If dolphins are so smart how come they get caught in those nets?"

"Smart and friendly on rye bread with some mayonnaise"

OK, enough about fish, where's the tuna?!?!?

Longlines are not nets, it is a longass line of baited hooks, like a trotline.

Back when companies were introducing "dolphin safe" tuna, I thought Star-Kist missed a good ad campaign: dress Charlie in a dolphin costume, with him saying he'd get caught, then have the announcer say "Sorry, Charlie, Star-Kist tuna is dolphin safe..."

I thought "tuna net" was a euphemism with which I was unfamiliar. Something akin to the venerable 'banana hammock'.

i came in here to say this. i stopped reading the article when it said "lonline tuna nets..."

that is akin to saying "lead guitar drummer..."

//we use NO NETS in hawaii
///could give you mountains of data if you want

I came here to say what Ironrat said. There are long lines and there are drift nets. Never heard of long nets. The story was written in a way to incite feelings against the fishing industry without using facts. Birds, dolphins, turtles and more may be getting tangled in long lines and this needs to be addressed but not at the expense of shutting down whole cultures and economies. Reminds me of how the hippies in the 1960s wanted to end all industry, chemical aided farming, and in general everything owned by 'Them rich people". Truth never stood in their way to propagandize their beliefs either.
