Motherfarkers. Once again, set up impossible goals, make the peace conference fail, come back and say "Israel is not willing to negotiate a fair settlement" and keep sending suicide bombers and rockets to kill Jews until the next conference.

Motherfarkers.

The Israelis have negotiated and negotiated. They've been ten times fairer with the Arabs than has ever been reciprocated. It's not the israelis that are breaking the treaties. The isrealis deal with constant crap and when they finally react it's the same old "look how the poor noble Palestinians are being mistreated" line.

Meh just do what you do with any other children fighting over something. Take it away from both of them and give it to someone else.

They're ALL idiots. All this over a stupid old wall where some old temple stood, or where some guy supposedly tied his horse before he "ascended to the heavens".

In a few hundred years, many words will be written about how silly humans used to be about their fantastical forces in the sky.

Idiots. Kill yourself over a head of stones and sand.

For fark's sake. And do you know what is the "Islamic claim" to the Wailing Wall?

Mohammed had a dream that white horse with the face of a woman and the tail of a peacock who could fly brought him to an unnamed town, tethered his horse and went to heaven.

It took CENTURIES before Islam started to consider Jerusalem to be that place, and it was only because of a political struggle. It took again more CENTURIES for some Muslims to consider that the Wailing Wall is where he tethered his horse. That "claim" is not even 100 years old and, once again, purely political

At the very farking least, we had a Temple.

Let's just say for the moment that some places on Earth are more sacred than others. After all the things done in that part of the world in God's various monikers it has surely become unhallowed.

It's all so foolishly childish it dis'es my combobulation and gruntlement.

Un-f*cking-believable. Abbas is citing a 1928 British mandate for this one?

Yep, same shiat, different peace talk. Keep upping the demands till you hit an absolute deal-breaker for the Israelis and then blame the failure of the treaty all on them for not conceding the impossible.

Hamas is never going to be sated until Israel is no more.

Tatsuma: It took CENTURIES before Islam started to consider...

Tatsuma, it's been centuries and 1/2 of Islam STILL hasn't decided to acknowledge the fact they killed Mohammed's family for tribal power. Do you think they kept track of details like "what happened to our prophet?"

2007-10-12 03:08:58 PM
Oh, and for the record, the Temple Mount is the most holy site of Judaism, not the Wailing Wall, which is a part of the Temple mount.

Saying that the Wailing Wall is the most holy site of Judaism is like having a BMW, it blows up, all you are left with is the metal logo and you say that was the most important part of the car

/Just saying

He cited a 1928 British mandate white paper that called for the area to be under Muslim control where Jews would be allowed to worship.

Well it's a good thing the British didn't make any mandates in opposition to this afterwards.

Seriously. I mean, what the fark?

He's asking for:

The Right of Return - They know Israel will never agree
Complete withdrawal from ALL of Judea and Samaria AND giving land from inside Israel - They know Israel will never agree

and now the complete control over Jerusalem and the Holy sites?? And that they won't compromise??

Abbas just proved that he never wanted to negotiate to begin with.

Seriously, just make it like Vatican City. It is autonomous and free to all religions. Then let Palestine have as many capitols as it wants, wherever it wants. And set up a superhighway from one plaestinian territory to the other with no exits. Kinda like the damn Oklahoma Turnpikes.

2007-10-12 03:19:25 PM
Yes yes yes!

Maran HaRav Eliashiv, considered the most influencial Haredi rabbi of the non-Hasidic world has just joined the fight against the division of Jerusalem and such a plan. The Hasidic world had already expressed that they would not stand for it and now even the religious anti-Zionists Badatz council, the most important anti-Zionist religious court in the world will also join part of the protest. R'Ovadia Yosef has already expressed himself against this plan, and he basically speaks for the whole Sephardi/Mizrahi world.

The Haredi world is getting mobilized to protest this, so you can only imagine what the Religious Zionists' reaction will be. And for those who are not the far-left either.

Shas will pull out of the government soon if there's any indication that Olmert is actually considering this. So will most parties in the coalition. Even the pensioners' party, a party created to help seniors. Likud and most party centers are outraged.

The Religious World, the Right and the Center are all massing together. Things are going to become really really interesting.

Oh man, I'm not even sure there will be a peace conference / Olmert as Prime Minister in two weeks.

Party Boy: FACTBOX-How far apart are Olmert and Abbas on deal?

Your factbox is wrong, Abbas is asking for pre-1967 land inside Israel that was considered no-man's land now. Abbas is also asking over control of the whole city AND Jewish holy sites. Abbas has not flinched when it comes to the right of return, he wants it all

2007-10-12 03:31:23 PM
Tatsuma: The Right of Return - They know Israel will never agree
Complete withdrawal from ALL of Judea and Samaria AND giving land from inside Israel - They know Israel will never agree

The point of asking for those things is to bargain them away (and yes, the first step is "we'll never give it up" of course because you want a high price for it). On the other side you have Israel saying they'd like the Right of Return off the table before the talks start, which is just as disingenuous.

If there's going to be a two state solution, whatever the lines are, both states have to be economically viable, with resources and access to things like ports and water. That's a more important concern than all the wrangling over exact percentages.

This idea certainly does have its appeal, at least in the short term. I suppose the question is finding an appropriate group to police it (the US is right out). Some group with no dog in the fight, an Asian or African force maybe. But, I don't know of any group offhand.

2007-10-12 03:37:44 PM
Boston Globe
A breakdown of the peace effort would deal a blow to the US aims of shoring up Palestinian moderates, weakening militant Islamic forces in the region, and winning Arab support for US policies toward adversaries in Iraq and Iran.

With Arab expectations high, some are predicting that an inconclusive outcome at the peace conference would set off a new round of Israeli-Palestinian blood-letting.

"The entire process has numerous weaknesses," said Amir Kulick, an analyst for Israel's Institute for National Security Studies. "There is a great chance that it will fail."

Tatsuma: Someone should clue in the Palestinians that they are not the ones in a position of power and they should stop trying to haggle as if they were.

Alas, might doesn't make right. If there are negotiations, then yes, BOTH sides get to make their demands. Neither side gets to conveniently say "oh but MY holy ox isn't up for grabs."

If Israel cannot accept people moving back in, then Israel has to buy them off. That's what negotiation means.

Personally I think the hardliners on both sides don't want peace. They think if only they can prolong the conflict, there's a chance they can win it all. Sadly, the governments respond every damn time - when the threat of peace breaks out, Hamas (or their allies now that they're in gov't, I suppose) just blows up a bus or sends a rocket, or Israel just happens to do a targeted strike on some militant (not to mention destroying some neighbor houses) or announce plans for "growth" of a settlement right at the worst possible time, because each side KNOWS exactly how to push the buttons of the other. And the dance goes on.
