czarangelus: You supported America's war on Afghanistan, yes? How is this different?

Actually, I was all for killing the shiat out of the Taliban leadership about the time they demolished the Buddha statues. Oh, and the umpteenth report of yet another woman subjected to an "honor killing." But, to address you:

czarangelus: no one has mentioned genocide yet

Regarding Turkey's history with monorities, especially Kurds, there will be tons of civilian deaths. Kurds will agitate for independence until they are pretty much wiped out. We call that genocide.

czarangelus: what the Hell are you talking about?

czarangelus: If the Kurds get their own country, mark my words - they'll just persecute ethnic minorities in Kurdistan in their own turn.

That's what I'm talking about. Your fatalism with regards to self-determination is atrocious. In fact, it was a key pillar of Wilson's after WWI. Without it, you'll see tons of bloodshed, as we've seen countless times. Kosovo? Eastern bloc? Kurds? Dare I say the Palestinian situation?

czarangelus: one a NATO ally

In name. They have actively NOT cooperated with us in recent years. They also execute people who speak out against "Turkishness." Great friends we have there. Don't drag that in. They aren't a threat to us, allies or not. We don't need them, militarily.

czarangelus: which would plunge several nations...into a bitter civil war

They are already at war. Turkish Kurds are feeling the pain of Turkish occupation (pops like a Kurdish toddler's head under fire). If we actually support Kurdish independence with arms, then Turkey may actually STOP killing Kurds. The warfare may actually end, if borders can be enforced.

czarangelus: How is not supporting independence for Kurdistan...the same thing as accepting genocide against them?

First, if we do nothing, and we leave Iraq, there WILL be a genocide against them. The only thing keeping them from invading Iraq RIGHT NOW is us, and the article points out that may not be enough.

You would have us do nothing, because "they'll just persecute ethnic minorities in Kurdistan in their own turn." For having a degree in ethics, you are a sick fork. You know that reason is dishonest, but you threw it out anyway.

Die in a phosphorous fire.

palladiate: Regarding Turkey's history with monorities, especially Kurds, there will be tons of civilian deaths.

cue Republicans: that's what happens in war.
but seriously, I think that this invasion will stir up far more shiat than it will solve. I think it's been demonstrated enough that invasions and occupations cause more terrorism than they prevent.

That's what I'm talking about. Your fatalism with regards to self-determination is atrocious.

I don't believe in self-determination that is based on ethnicity or religion. That doesn't mean I don't believe in self-determination. But I find race-based politics to be abhorrent.

(pops like a Kurdish toddler's head under fire).

You have got to be kidding me. How many Vietnamese children got plugged during that occupation? How many Iraqi children are dying from Chlorea during a certain other occupation? Your self-righteousness is ridiculous on its face.

First, if we do nothing, and we leave Iraq, there WILL be a genocide against them. The only thing keeping them from invading Iraq RIGHT NOW is us, and the article points out that may not be enough.

Are you suggesting that all invasions and occupations are genocide?

Die in a phosphorous fire.

Well, we know who uses phosphorous on civilians after all

KaponoFor3: I'd like to point out the similarity of Turkey possibly invading Kurdistan with Israel possibly invading Gaza/West Bank in response to "repeated and continuing bombings". Something tells me you'd rationalize one as justified and condemn the other.

Shh, don't point out the huge hypocrisy.

I can't believe he's backing the murderous Turkish government against the Kurds.

czarangelus: Well, we know who uses phosphorous on civilians after all

I really love how your brain works.

Reality: "The IDF made use of phosphorous shells during the war against Hezbollah in attacks against military targets in open ground."

Enters Czar's brain: "The IDF made us of phosphorous shells during the war against kittens and handicapped orphans in attacks against schools in residential areas"

Also, this is about Turkey and Kurds, so shut the fark up and don't make this about Israel once again

2007-10-09 03:49:58 PM
Tatsuma: Reality: What the Israeli government says: "The IDF made use of phosphorous shells during the war against Hezbollah in attacks against military targets in open ground."

Anyway, we also know who else uses it so it's all good.

I can't believe he's backing the murderous Turkish government against the Kurds.

So what would you suggest the Turks do in response to the continuing bombings?

Tatsuma: I can't believe he's backing the murderous Turkish government against the Kurds.

He's said crazy shiat before, but damn. For as bad as he makes out Gaza, the Kurds have had it 1000x worse over the last 80 years. He just ignores that shiat with stuff like:

czarangelus: How many Vietnamese children got plugged during that occupation? How many Iraqi children are dying from Chlorea during a certain other occupation?

He's trying to apologize for Turkish repression because "people died in Vietnam." WTF, if I understand he's saying it was ok then, and it's ok here? Seriously czarangelus, you are a sick bastard.

Why not just come out and say that you're looking forward to civil wars in Iran and Turkey, and a massive escalation in the civil war in Iraq, right off hand? That's what independence for Kurdistan means, you know. You don't imagine that the Turks are going to give up 1/3 of their territory without a whisper, do you? Nor can you imagine that the Iranians would appreciate a stepping-up of Kurdish terrorists attacks in Iran? I believe there is a political solution for the Kurds that wouldn't involve utter chaos spreading to still more Middle Eastern countries.

Can you cite anything from the past, oh, say 5 years that demonstrates that the Kurds are deeply repressed in Turkey or Iran?

I know!!! Not only that, but he also JUSTIFIED the repression!

czarangelus: the biggest unprovoked persecution

so they are responsible for what happened to them

and

Tatsuma: Whole villages have been destroyed, they've been raped, maimed, tortured, slaugthered by the Turks and the Iraqis and the Iranians.

b>czarangelus: ...in response to uprisings, rebellions, and revolutions. We here in America had a bit of a secession movement, once. General Sherman's March to the Sea? The fact that these governments responded to secessionist violence with violence shouldn't be a surprise or a particular outrage.

fecal ventilatory collision indeed.

vartian: Speaks: This has been on and off for a long time. The Turks are scared crapless about an independent Kurdistan on its borders and Kurdish Separatists in Turkey are only making matters worse by committing acts of terrorism/vandalism/crime/etc and then fleeing into northern Iraq where they are sheltered by the Kurds.

Why not? They still refuse to even acknowledge the Armenian Genocide (as does the US, by the way), so why should they worry about it? No one will hold them accountable for their actions.

It was just Christians getting killed in Armenia though. Who cares? They deserve it for being all bossy and judgmental and stuff.

2007-10-09 04:17:30 PM
But they told us the Kurds are the good guys.

And what nation is training and arming the PKK...why Israel of course. Israeli soldiers and intelligence has been in northern Iraq since we got there.

Thanks Israel. You're a real buddy. Tell us where you want our soldiers to die today please.

2007-10-09 04:17:51 PM
jasonmicron: Because 17 resolutions over a 13 year period wasn't enough time...

According to UN inspectors (see: Scott Ritter), they didn't have WMDs in 2002.

Funny story, they actually didn't have them.

sorry! our bad! oops! lol!

I can't discuss how crazy Ron Paul is without people saying "You only oppose him cause he doesn't want to send Israel money!1"

I can't discuss Kurdistan without people saying "What about Palestine, uh??"

shiat, I'm surprised I can discuss movies without people bringing Israel up.

whidbey: See what we started? Now any ol' NATO/UN country can do whatever the hell they want.

That's why we started the UN, to avoid these kinds of things.

Now you see what happens when we refuse to take it seriously.

Got to peg you on this one, see what happens when the UN doesn't take itself seriously and actualy deploys measures to prevent this kind of crap??

People stop respecting you.

The "Turkey makes you sleepy" myth has been debunked a thousand times. Turkey is no more "sleep-inducing" than say, a cheeseburger. All food makes you sleepy due to soemthing called the "Dagwood Effect" where your stomach causes your Isle of Langerhans to produce a bumper-crop of amino acids which take us on a little hallucinogenic "trip" while our stomachs digest the food. Theoretically you can eat your way to an LSD-like high including hallucinations. Interestingly, the more hungry you are and the more you subsequently eat determines how severe your diet "trip" is. I once came off a fast (I'm a Hindu and a Food Scientist) and wolfed down some Baked Lays, Oh, the colors, wow!

I'll suggest fighting the separatists. It's far better than your implied endorsement of collective punishment.

czarangelus: Can you cite anything from the past, oh, say 5 years that demonstrates that the Kurds are deeply repressed in Turkey or Iran?

Leyla Zana- Arrested and sentenced for 15 years for speaking Kurdish on national TV. Oh, yea, she was an elected MP.
A good treatment in the NYT of Turkish repression
From another source you'd trust, how about The Guardian?
How about IndyMedia?
Human Rights Watch has a few things to say on this.
I listed those "liberal" sites for you. But even the right's think tanks and magazines think this is some farked up, repugnant shiat.

palladiate: Leyla Zana- Arrested and sentenced for 15 years for speaking Kurdish on national TV. Oh, yea, she was an elected MP.

At her inauguration as an MP, she reportedly identified herself as a Kurd. Amnesty International reported "She took the oath of loyalty in Turkish, as required by law, then added in Kurdish, 'I shall struggle so that the Kurdish and Turkish peoples may live together in a democratic framework.'

The Turkish Constitution bans the formation of political parties on an ethnical basis.

The latest dates in the articles you gave me were '98. That was a decade ago. Hell, a decade ago, Iraq had water treatment plants, 24 hours a day of electricity, a functioning national government...
