(Washington Post)   Intel had secret back door into Al-Qeada comm network. Gave WH limited access to it on condition they tell no one else. Three hours later, 30 intel agencies and 3 news networks had acessed the site; and the door was closed   (washingtonpost.com) divider line 361

I'm currently leaking through my back door so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

You know...one would think that if you were an intel agent and about to download sensitive material, you would at least use some pretty beefy proxies. Having al Qaeda easily trace you back to government IP's is all sorts of stupid.

millertrey: When Hillary's in office

The only ones who want Hillary on the Democratic ticket are the Republicans, because they know that she's unelectable. Not only that, but since she's been spending all of her quality, family time with the Bushes she's no more a Democrat than you are.

Doesn't really matter, though. Romney's already been selected for the office even if the Democrats did put up a real candidate.

Our government's ability to keep a secret=strainer's ability to hold water.

/unless, of course, that secret has to do with monitoring Americans, then it's under lock and key.

The Bush Administration couldn't hit it's ass with both it's hands.

No real surprise they blew this important intel within an hour of getting it.

Doofus, inc.

It's OK, Republicans. Just keep chanting, "It's the liberals who hate 'Murrika," over and over again and maybe it'll come true.

binnster: real shaman: flaEsq: Figures. Fox News are traitors of the worst sort.

Except that ABC News had it posted 2 hours before that.

So Fox News are traitors of the 2-hour-lag-time sort?

He doesnt care about that. He doesnt care about the leak at all enough to even read and understand the article. He just has such an intense hatred of anything labelled Fox news that he will cry wolf each and every time the slightest opportunity presents itself. It's a political thang.

Just send the marines down those interweb tubes to blow the fire-wall with some bombs and we will be back inside.

Let's face it - most 13-yr-old hackers are better at getting into sensitive and well protected networks & sites than the government.

Wait a second.

You gave information to the shrub fark-ups and now your surprised that they farked it up again.

2007-10-09 11:50:21 AM
But that's good right, because AQ is a group of freedom fighters with some legitimate complaints. And if they are against the US, it's because of Bush, and Bush is bad, so AQ is good, right?

i'm so confused!

Ah, what would FARK be without a good thread every few minutes for the libs to bash Bush. When Hillary's in office we'll see if the mods greenlight all of the articles on the horrors of our new socialized healthcare system, or if FARK just quietly shuts down and the libs slink back into the long lines waiting for a "free" doctor visit.

It's like we never had a Clinton in the office...

/remember how nobody made a big deal about anything the Clintons did while Bill was in charge?

Hard to diminish what doesn't exist.

With all the bad news in the air around this time about both this administration and the republicans in general, is anyone really surprised they would dump this out there to distract people?

Give it a rest. Most reasonable people think Al Qaeda are a bunch of murderers who should be brought to justice.

And although I loathe the Bush administration* (and have done since the early months given what I saw of their actions), I am not necessarily going to think that just because somebody criticizes Bush, that makes them a good person.

\* note I say Bush administration
\\I really think that had Bush been left to his own devices, he would have been a mostly harmless used car salesman
\\\blame the puppeteers, not the puppet.

Why didn't someone just send a copy of the video around? There must be a reason.

Is it just that the decision makers don't understand how digital documents work? Is it because people in the intel business know that sending any information potentially allows that information to be intercepted? Is it because they are all so used to getting their information Fark-style (where thousands of people all throttle one server in an attempt to gawk at its contents in unison) that they didn't think twice about this?

I tells ya, if this group of clowns had been running the show in the 1940s, we probably wouldn't have won the war.

I mean, the Germans were blissfully using Enigma right up until the end, even though the Poles had cracked the code as early as 1932! Hell, they didn't officially disclose Ultra until the 1970s.

2007-10-09 11:55:04 AM
Most of you seem to be forgetting the most important part of this story.

tin foil hat on

Namely, that it is in the best interest of the US Government to keep Al Queda alive and well, for the sole purpose of allowing the "war on terror" to continue and fill the pockets of big US corporations, and instill fear in the public to allow the removal of more civil liberties. If the US govt actually tried to stop Al Queda, they would be shooting themselves in the foot.

see? its just that easy

I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that it leaked out of the Pentagon, WH or DHS, not the CIA.

The media outlets should be compelled to give over the name of the sources who leaked them in information and those leakers should be jailed.

no they don't. They admit it happened in all its particulars. They merely assert that SITE wasn't the first source for the Bin Laden video (they never claimed they were) and that we "probably" have other hooks into the Al-q network elsewhere. We can only hope

Negative. Do you know how many people worked on the bomb before we dropped it? Tens of thousands in one way or another. No one heard about that shiat until it dropped.

Think about it. It would only take a team of guys to wire the towers, and they could be kept quite. It would only take them a weekend (sorta like the weekend the towers were closed prior to the "terrorist act")
