(VideoSift) Video The problem with rolling a bowling ball from a moving car onto a ramp, you see, is that the ball continues to move with the same horizontal speed as the car   (youtube.com) divider line 43

Now that I've submitted it, I think that's actually not true. The ramp converts some of the horizontal velocity into vertical velocity. I guess the car just happened to slow down the exact same amount as the ball.

Anyway, one thing is true: pwned!

While you're comment regarding the physics is correct, do you really think these guys look like physics majors?

Would insurance cover that? What would the claim look like?

2007-10-06 11:24:31 AM
The claim would look like:

"I don't know what happened. I just came out of the mall and it was like this."

MOHWowbagger: I guess the car just happened to slow down the exact same amount as the ball.

Well, it slowed down a bit less. The ball was apparently released out of the front window, but hit in the upper corner in the rear windshield.

The funny thing is he had about a second or two to turn the car left and avoid the collision, he got pretty good hang time on the ball...

The car's brake lights are on, so the car is almost certainly slowing down. If they hadn't braked they probably would have been ok. That also raises the possibility of it being staged; braking to match the ball speed. I can't hear the audio from here so I don't know if that would give any indication one way or the other. In all likelihood though, they're just retarded.

I don't think it slowed that much; the ball hit a foot or two behind where it was released - which seems appropriate. I guess I'm saying the car didn't have to slow down for this outcome.

I had another look, and you are correct (except I don't think it's staged). Haven't had my coffee yet today...or something.

What's truly extraordinary is that the bowling ball didn't hit the rear window. It smashed down on the right rear pillar which popped the rear window free (after breaking seemingly breaking only the upper right portion of the window.)

So we get to see the entire window, in one piece fly off and then get the wonderful smash.

Very cool!

Thanks subby... We are working on the script of Final Destination 4 and you just gave me a great idea on how to get rid of the pesky dorky kid who only gets to hang out with the cooler kids because his parents have a lot of money.

I figure that they slowed down for two reasons- one, they were running out of space for the car, two, they wanted to watch the ball land and they assumed it would go further. Any shouting or talking could have been someone trying to get them to keep moving because they could see the ball coming down.

As stupid as it was, I'm glad they were kind enough to share it.

Why, o why could they have not done that in a convertable?

Because that would have been TOO entertaining.

did anyone else hear the idiot blame the wind?

2007-10-06 01:39:19 PM
I've seen this before... and I watched it alongside a video of a giant rubber-band ball (the size of a wrecking ball) rolling down a hill and crushing a car. Obviously this ball is much smaller, but nonetheless, I prefered the giant ball of rubber bands.

2007-10-06 01:49:24 PM
it looked like the car turned slightly as the hit the ramp, giving it the movement. also the ball barely hit the left side of the ramp.

While farkers discuss the physics I just sit back and say "that looked like fun... thank god for youtube so these ideas get quelled before I try for myself."

/c'mon, you know you've wanted to do stupid shiate like this before

TehNacho: Would insurance cover that? What would the claim look like?

I just had my wife watch this (she's an insurance agent). She said insurance would cover that if you had comprehensive, but the insurance company would probably drop you for being a dumbass.

your right, I like this (new window) slightly more, since its a larger object,vs a smaller vehicle.

Nice one. Hopefully, they'll Darwinate next time and fall out of the car with the ball, or get killed in a roll over when the ball hits the car.

Wanted to? Stupid shiate like this is what we did in high school.

and I don't even mean "like this" in a "we also did stupid stuff" kind of way.... I mean I've been in a moving car when the passenger threw the bowling ball out. We weren't dumb enough to build a ramp though.

/hey, it's better than doing drugs

Thank you. I had almost clicked and hesitated just long enough to see your post.
Again, thank you.

The rear window perfectly popping out of the car is what I thought made this an amazing video. There's hardly any in the car.

i knew a kid once who told me about some bowling alley near an overpass.

an over pass that cars would park under.

so was there with a kid he knew...who stole some bowling balls...

and proceeded to drop them on the roofs of cars below...

he said all the windows would shatter at once...

he also said he was "just there" and didn't participate....

Newton's Laws of Mechanics FTW

2007-10-07 09:08:47 PM
That could have been a whole lot worse. A window is easy to replace and takes no more than a afternoon. They were lucky it didn't cave the roof or come back in through the front windshield.

2007-10-08 11:24:41 PM
What the hell did that stupid kid think this would accomplish? Space flight? Losing his virginity?

He should have his license suspended.
