You are correct - Mendelian inheritance is controlled at a single locus.

My bad. Skin color is more complicated and presents over several places and over multiple chromosomes. I shouldn't have disgraced his name.

Those who suggest that free speech doesn't apply to "tax-payer funded" publications need to be very, very careful. The way things are going all publications will be "tax-payer funded" to some degree and, according to your argument, divested from the First Amendment.

The entire point of the First Amendment ia to limit THE GOVERNMENT'S restrictions on speech. To make the argument that since some publication is "tax-payer funded" means it is not covered plays right into the fascists' hands.

Do you know what causes Down Syndrome? Because if ghey 'came about like Down Syndrome', it would be so friggin easy to check for it that there wouldn't be a debate.

I'll buy that. But if homos are "born that way", how does the occurrence manifest itself? I actually tend to agree that at least some of them were born that way. I mean, you just gotta look at some of them and you know they had no choice in the matter, but how does it happen?

I don't know, but comparing it so something as well understood and easy to diagnose as Down's is just retarded (almost as retarded as, say, someone with Down's). If teh ghey were tracked down to one too many/few chromosomes, there wouldn't even be an argument.

ferrocene: whatshisname: It obviously has some benefit to a species, because it persists.

So because something persists it's beneficial to the species? That's kind of specious reasoning, isn't it? How is leprosy or an extra chromosome (down's syndrome) beneficial to the species?

this has probably been answered, but if it's a benefit to the kins, then it can perpetuate itself in the species.

So for example, if you're gay, you're not having children (presumably). But if your no-kids status means that you're essentially a good uncle, that is that your sister(s) can raise more successful kids because of your assistance, and your nieces/nephews share 25% of your genes, then your "gay" genes can persist in the population.

Possibility two, the "genes that cause" gayness in males could be beneficial genes in females, such that female with genes that, in males (in the presence of testosterone) make the male attracted to other males, make the female more fecund.

Last possibility, that I personally believe, is that sexual preference is a continuum (like the Kinsey scale), and that many genes contribute to that preference, and it's also shaped by the environment. However, since we as individuals and as society tend to be more binary in our choices/ approved mating systems, regardless of where you are on the continuum, you pick one side or the other.

ferrocene: Religion and belief and faith are all man-made. That is a fact. Man cannot escape death. Another fact. There is no Hell. Can't prove a negative. There is no such thing as an afterlife. There is no such thing as eternity.

The only good thing religion has done for humanity is give them hope, so I can't knock it too much. But it is what it is. Sorry, man.

So to you the universe is a dead place ... silent, dark and empty? Is your spiritual journey then complete?

You have it all figured out do you? You sound so certain. You have decided that "religion" has no basis. Now this observation has an incredibly broad scope. Religion covers much more than the simple theism of most of the folks here. Even within the scope of the Christian experience you will find that many have seen beyond this and you will find that Western and Eastern views of God merge.

The universe itself is God and you are a part of it.

You say that "man cannot escape death"? Have you ever pondered just what this means? Every atom in your body has existed in one form or another since the Big Bang, the creation of the universe, 12 Billion years ago. Nothing is ever created or destroyed it merely changes form. You, as a "self" are only a construct, and evolutionary development which allows you manipulate the world around you in a way that no other animal can. However, this is a two edged sword because you are also aware of death. Do not fear the death of this self. It is of little consequence. When the raindrop falls into the sea it is not destroyed it, no longer defined by its limits, becomes infinitively greater ... it becomes the sea.

Take comfort in this. Peace.

kc987654: ferrocene

it's kind of mendelian but it's polygenic. something like six genes contribute to skin color, so you have (theoretically) "36" shades of color.

Technically everything is mendelian in the since that discrete packets of information (genes) are inherited, but the more genes you have contributing to a trait, the more the probabilities are distributed in a bell curve. So with skin color, each individual gene follows a mendelian pattern of inheritance, but the resulting phenotype, skin color, is not.

What in the blue fark are you even talking about?

I went back and skimmed through this thread, and out of almost 400 posts, I found one Farker who suggested that this should not have been published in a school newspaper. There was plenty of "This kid is a retard!" That is not a call for censorship. There was a smattering of "This kid is a closet homosexual!" That is also not a call for censorship, and is probably true.

If anything, the most common sentiment is "The kid is a hatemonger, but let him speak his piece."

I realize that this gets in the way of your self-martyring sanctimony and delusions of oppression, but them's the facts, Chet.

Coolboy55: We know a few things from the Bible about homosexuality:

No, you don't.
What you really mean to say is, "I have opinions about homosexuality based on the things I read in the Bible".

Nothing can be called "knowledge" unless it can be verified as truth.
Thus, the Bible contains no knowledge, it only contains ideas.
Either you subscribe to those ideas, or you do not.
But don't pretend for a second that any of its contents are objectively true.

I disagree.

When sin comes into the picture anything that is good can be used for evil, plain and simple. The same hands that hold and protect a baby can kill another human. The same feet that run to the scene of an accident to help can kick in someone's teeth. The same tongue that can praise and build others up can tear someone down.

The fact than humankind has found an alternate way to use the anus doesn't make God obsolete - instead it once again underscores what is at the core of the Bible - that man is fallen, will find every way possible to misuse what God intended for good (who doesn't enjoy a good poop) and we need a saviour, namely, Jesus.

The whole concept of a "Spiritual Journey" is man-made. We have a recursive loop problem here. And yes, space is 99% empty (except for that missing dark matter...). By definition, there is no sound, so it is silent. The occasional star gives light, so I can't say it's too dark. I'm not an astronomer, though.

I sound certain, because I understand and agree with the most probable, most up-to-date information that all of humanity has gathered. Old information is old information and if it doesn't fit in the most up-to-date model of the Universe, then it gets tossed out. Current models of the Universe, if found to be invalid, will be tossed out. Education is evolutionary, and that makes it very powerful. East vs West theology, it's all created by man. Man cannot mentally invent a system and then have that system become true. You're putting the egg before the chicken.

The universe itself is God and you are a part of it.

Speculation made by an emotional human.

As much as I hate to say it, the principal's actually right. Freedom of press means freedom of press, and this article wasn't presented as fact: it's an op ed piece. The writer is dead wrong (on many levels, including the fact that ignoring anything else, homosexuality in a population can be functional to the group in a number of ways), and an asshole, but he still has a right to be printed.
