Silly_Sot: Like it or not, if you support high school papers' right to publish scathing critiques of G.W. Bush, you have to admit the right of dimwitted crap like this to be published, too. That's the trick of freedom of the press. Even complete asswipes get to use it.

I totally support their right to bash it. I also love our right to biatch about them publishing it and make fun of them for being fundies.

Those passages refer to judging concepts and things, the origonal statement refers to judging people.

ferrocene: So because something persists it's beneficial to the species?

Pretty much, yeah. Since every trait basically costs energy, any trait that doesn't help, hurts. Kinda like a "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" approach.

So anything that's bad, or even "neutral" would get selected out over time, and basically, no trait is 100% neutral -- it either helps in some way, or it gets weeded out eventually to save energy.

For more information on the possible survival value of homosexuality, you might want to look up the terms "Kin selection" and "altruism" as they relate to evolutionary biology.

And so forth. The situation as I see it is this: we are one nation and one people under God. His judgment will come one day, and it is my responsibility, knowing that there are houses on fire, to alert the occupants.

That's all well and good, and as much as I disagree, I respect your POV. But I disagree when it comes to making laws against others' lives. Warn them of their "sin" if you want to, it won't help, but be my guest.

Ok, I am on your side and all, but SOME things persist in populations because the populations seem to like them and pick mates based on them. These can be things like frigate bird neck pouches or peacock tails. I guess expending extra energy on producing them demonstrates evolutionary fitness.

Sometimes, though it can get ridiculous:

Right, but remember that the stipulation here is that medical science will develop a definitive test for the "gay gene", so the fundies will know for sure which babies should be drowned. Plus, this is the South -- you can't tell me that drowning a gay baby (gayby?) will be anything more than a $20 fine. The_Religious_Left: There is nothing in the good book after the new covenant concerning homosexuality. If it were a bad sin, Jesus would have at least mentioned it, no?

There are several references to homosexuality after the New Covenant.

"Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)

"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man-and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them." (Romans 1:18-32)

We know a few things from the Bible about homosexuality:

1) It is a sin. (see above) and many others...
2) All sin separates us from God. (Romans 6:23) and many others...
3) Unrepentant sin is judged by God. (1 John 5:16) and many others...

"Whether the content is popular or not, it's not up to us to decide what runs as long as it's not disruptive,"
***

Um... it is disruptive. Also, it lacks any credibility. Where's the proof that it's a disorder? Perhaps predetermined preference coupled with dispositions garnered from experience makes someone favor the same gender. Ever think of that? What an ass. I but the turd is just jealous that his love interest spurned him for a chick.

We actually had a similar issue at our college, with a bunch of closet case phobic bashers making it a part to NOT wear jeans on Jeans Day; this is funny since the ironic part of this special jeans day is to show that no one just goes out and decides to be gay but rather it's just something they are every day. It actually got pretty intense. I was accosted while rebutting "Chalk Talk" - side walk chalk with a message - with inflammatory and derogatory language pointed towards gays. They tried to get the cops to arrest me for writing, in chalk (that would erase with the rain), a message to abstain from incendiary activity against persons with lifestyles that others do not like even though personal issues are not the business of others.

Well, they ran an op piece by some piece of shiat who said "all cultures have said homosexuality is wrong" and "you don't find homosexuality in nature." Next issue... multiple examples of historical acceptance of homosexuality (look it up) and the same for homosexuality in nature (squirrels, to be exact - but other animals, including rats [brains are similar to humans] and many primates engage in homosexual activities).

But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner-not even to eat with such a person. For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? But those who are outside God judges. Therefore "put away from yourselves the evil person." Score one for free speech (I wish I could believe that the administration let this through because of that and not because they agreed with it) even if it is questionable. Oh, it offended a few snowflakes? GOOD. There is nothing that motivates someone to do something more than when they are offended. Unless you use a cattle prod of course...

Now to see if the student body of the school can score points by writing a well thought out and factually supported counter-opinion, and the school administration allows it through (statement in article saying they will not withstanding) and allows it through unedited.

It's important to have these discussions with our youth NOW rather than glossing over them for when they hit 18 and are magically ready to be adults and hold well thought out opinions on the big bucket of controversy they will be able to vote on.

If I have one caveat over this whole thing, is that it sounds as if something that was presented as scientific fact was cleared under "opinion" to avoid actually having to check and see if he was just spouting random things he took to be fact whether they are or not. Which makes it all the more important that someone write a reply.

ciberido: So anything that's bad, or even "neutral" would get selected out over time, and basically, no trait is 100% neutral -- it either helps in some way, or it gets weeded out eventually to save energy.

If I'm not mistaken, our genome is something like 95% garbage and only 5% is actually used. In terms of energy efficiency, it is the worst. It TAKES energy to remove genes, so neutrality doeesn't waste a thing, except for the amino acids themselves.

There are PLENTY of traits that persist and yet they have no known function. We have remnants of the first single-celled mitochondria DNA, and yet we no longer produce energy that way (we use more highly-evolved versions).

In fact, I thought you were going to correct me by saying all genetic variation is better for the species. Genetically-dissimilar people protect the species from viral catastrophe. I would have conceded to you on that point. :)

9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

From the King James bible...it's just says don't eat with your brother man should he be a "fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner".

If I had to guess, I'd theorize that the gay gene originated as biological check on population. There are some studies that claim the gay gene is switched on in utero. Possibly in response to an external trigger. Which would be useful to an animal population under stress from lack of food due to overpopulation. If the mother doesn't get enough nutrition while pregnant, the gay gene switches on so that the kid doesn't want to reproduce when he/she matures, preferring the company of the same sex, thus surpressing population growth of the species. Still basically harmless to present day society. When people were dying like flies a hundred years ago, gays were probably seen as traitors to the species, by not contributing to population production.

And people with genetically driven S/M tendencies probably made better warriors, which led to better survivability of their offspring, thus prepetuating their genes.

I'm a nature>nuture proponent, I think most human behavior is genetically driven anyway...

squirrelinator: I do not believe that I personally have any right to judge or set up laws with regards to homosexuality. However, the government was instituted by God and has the authority and responsibility to maintain a civil and Christian nation.

"Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience' sake. For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God's ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor." (Romans 13:1-7)

I'm not sure there's actually a gay gene, is there? There's quite a few in my family (siblings and uncles), which would suggest it's genetic, but it could just as easily be through a history of sexual abuse, which also runs through families and can cause homosexuality. Or it could be the hormones...more older brothers means you have a higher chance of being gay, too.
