South Africa?

That's like a hundred miles from here. Who cares?

2007-10-03 05:23:53 PM
How much do you want to bet they won't be saved? Mine rescue operations have not fared well lately in the States. I'm guessing South Africa probably doesn't have Grade A mining equipment or safety measures.

This was on Bloomberg. Does that mean the price of gold is going up?

Saw DEVO recently, they still kick ass.

Hope these guys are ok. I could never work in a mine, it's a long story but tight underground passages have a very bad association for me.

Subby deserves major credit... that headline is sick and hilarious at the same time. Kudos to you.

Jesus! 3200 guys down there in one shift? Makes me all kinds of claustophobic just thinking about it. And if that piece of falling metal took out power lines to the pumps, this will end very, very badly.

I'm no geologist, but I'm pretty sure in mines that deep, without proper air conditioning it gets more than a little warm. This could wind up being a horrible catastrophe.

Where's Nelson Mandela when you need him? Oh I forgot, he be dead.

2007-10-03 05:37:40 PM
According to the BBC (pops):
"Rescuers are trying to use an adjacent shaft to rescue the miners, a spokeswoman for the mine's owner, Harmony Gold Mining, said.

The accident happened at about 0800 GMT and there has been no communication with the miners since then, she said."

0800 GMT is 13.5 hours ago if my calculations are right. That's a lot of time for that many people to be out of contact.

2007-10-03 05:37:52 PM
That's in extremely poor taste. Well done, subby!

2007-10-03 05:38:20 PM
from cnn's story:

The lift is expected to be functioning in two hours, but it could take more than 10 hours to evacuate all the miners, according to the press association.

maybe it's not going to end badly.
