(Reason Magazine)   More young black men are in prison than in college, presidential candidates say. Sounds too juicy to check, but someone did. Turns out five times as many are in college as are in prison   (reason.com) divider line 370

We Morehouse guys are too busy hanging out on Fark to go to the Big House!

/DRTFA but the way people calculate that misleading stat when pushing their agenda isn't based on people actually in jail but 'combination of incarcerated, on probation, or in any way under the supervision of the judicial system'

The whole black people in prison vs college is a classic Weak Analogy:

What they don't say is if these men are in college for atheletics or scholastic reasons.

We need to work on getting more black men into college on their marks which means that they need access to the tools that will help them do that.

OK, so the server finally let me read it. I maintain that giving people sound bites based on misleading statistics undermines whatever rational arguments that you're trying to get people to understand.

'There aren't enough black males in college and too many in prison' isn't nearly as attention grabbing but is a reasonable starting point for me.

Normally I disagree with the things you say. But on this, you're 100% correct. The Dem's need to quit pandering to the like of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton; they're driving folks like me into the arms of a less than loving Republican party (not really, they only serve to make me NOT vote).

As the Post Fact Checker notes, the situation is bad enough for young black men that it doesn't need to be exaggerated. One solution goes largely unmentioned by Obama and Edwards--if they really want to keep a lot of young black men (and others) out of prison, end the idiotic Drug War. According to Drug War Facts:

Of the 250,900 state prison inmates serving time for drug offenses in 2004, 133,100 (53.05%) were black, 50,100 (19.97%) were Hispanic, and 64,800 (25.83%) were white.

Now that I can get behind.

I believe, though, that the Democrats are somewhat more likely to end the Drug War than the Republicans. Though to be fair, 'somewhat more likely' is still roughly nil.

The fact is that too many black men are throwing their lives away by committing crimes and not enough black men are improving their lives by getting an education or learning a trade.

Political hyperbole aside, there is a real problem.

2007-10-03 11:15:37 AM
The city where I work is trying to increase taxes to build a new prison because of overcrowding. One politician is opposing it because "it will just be an excuse to incarcerate more young african-americans". Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to political comments on race.

OlafTheBent: What they don't say is if these men are in college for atheletics or scholastic reasons

but that shouldn't matter. they are in college, for free if they're on athletic scholarship, and having the chance to get a higher education and improve their lives and career prospects

Affirmative action better get going on getting more young black men in prison, then, Sounds as if they are underrepresented there.

What about black male college athletes who go to jail while still enrolled? which category do they fall in. Florida needs an answer before their next player gets arrested

Sigh. This is a misinterpretation of an article released a couple days ago saying that more African American men are in prison than in DORMITORIES. Not college. And for the first time since 2001 (I think) there are more people in dorms than in prison.

\ Not sure who's eating better

2007-10-03 12:03:03 PM
Oh good. Now that we have that settled, and it's clear that everything is peachy-keen for black, urban youth, we can get back to the important things, like paying Blackwater to kill civilians in Iraq.

2007-10-03 12:03:03 PM
Quote1: More than three times as many black people live in prison cells as in college dorms, the government said in a report to be released Thursday.

Quote2: The numbers, driven by men, do not include college students who live off campus. Previously released census data show that black and Hispanic college students - commuters and those in dorms - far outnumber black and Hispanic prison inmates.

They think 5 times is good?

For every 1,000 black college men there are 200 in jail. That is alarming, if you ask me.

2007-10-03 12:04:23 PM
So if I am doing my math right less than 60,000 black males between the ages of 16 and 24 are in prison for non-drug related crimes. Shenanighans. I know from watching BET that black people don't read books, bath or brush their teeth. They would also rather spend money on rims that land.

the problem is that the sheep on both sides of the voting body DO NOT look up facts. this is why the GOP will beat the living snot out of Hillary Clinton; they can pretty much make up whatever they want about her and their constituency will gladly eat it up

I have a perfect plan to end the drug war but no one believes me enough to try it. All you have to do is start fighting it as hard against rich white kids as against poor black kids. Specifically, with real police on private college campuses. When a kid gets caught with drugs on most private college campuses, there is no law enforcement consequences; as much for the protection of their own reputations as for any concern for the kid, colleges tend to try to deal with such things in-house. A kid will get suspended, maybe even expelled, but he won't do time and he won't have a job-crushing criminal record. Off campus, there's no such protection. Start locking up the college kids at the same rate as non-college kids and ten million mommies and daddies who vote and contribute to campaigns will be on the phone to their Congresscritters overnight. Ba da bang, ba da bing, no more drug war. Also, fewer wet towels littering the doorways of dorm rooms.
